Barack Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 United States visit to Richmond, Jamestown and Williamsburg in Virginia. In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed signed photograph of herself and the Duke of Edinburgh - apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries.
It is believed the Queen already has an iPod, a 6GB silver Mini version she is said to have bought in 2005 at the suggestion of Prince Andrew.
UPDATE: Pool reporter Richard Wolf of USA Today says that an Obama aide told him the President also gave the Queen a "rare songbook signed by Richard Rodgers". END UPDATE

The comments from the Brits on this are priceless!! :rotf:
-
There was widespread criticism in Britain and from Anglophiles in the US of Mr Obama's recent present to Mr Brown of a box set of classic American movies on DVDs that were not compatible with British DVD players.
:lmao:
From the comments:
Fourth paragraph to the last: fix "indiacted" to "indicated". Good article. The US president is a dreadful cur, with no appreciation for history or former relationships in the world. Even the dumb American people with grow to detest the very mention of his name. It will take a little while, however, because they have been so dumbed down by the educational system here
you can always count on Obumbler to muck it up.
by now nobody should assume that these incidents are accidental.
"....and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 visit to the United States."
Ha! Obama probably likes watching footage of himself all the time but I sincerely doubt that Her Majesty is in any way narcissistic. And doesn't she take he favorite cameraman everywhere with her to do the official shoot?
What a poorly thought out gift.
"In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed photograph of herself - apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries."
Nothing extra? Not so special, then, is he?
"Earlier, Mr Obama had spoken of his admiration for Her Majesty but indicated that his wife was handling the details of their royal meeting..."
Newsflash for Michelle. Apart from obsessing about what she should wear and picking out O's tie, the 'details of their royal meeting' ain't her business.
These clowns remind me of the old TV show, "The Beverly Hillbillies". The obamas have lots of class. Regrettably, it's all low class...

The Queen's gift to the Messiah should have been Churchill's bust.

..."And so I'm very much looking forward to meeting her for the first time later this evening. And as you might imagine, Michelle has been really thinking that through -- because I think in the imagination of people throughout America, I think what the Queen stands for and her decency and her civility, what she represents, that's very important."
...
Another note: In the third to the last paragraph, what Obama said, if it is quoted exactly, makes absolutely no sense. But that is expected if he didn't have his teleprompter with him.
:lmao:

Am I the only one embarrassed? ....and does that make me racist?
-
Somebody pleeeeeeeeeeaze get someone else to do the gift shopping.....Martha Stewart's a democrat...she at least knows proper etiquette.....cause whomever is doing it now....doesn't have a clue. ::)
-

No....as I mentioned on the other thread on this subject, I sincerely apologize to the citizens of the UK for this clown......

Does anyone in the state department have any clue as to foreign relations? I mean come one, insulting the Queen is one of the quicker ways to piss the English off. Make fun of Charles or Camilla, if you must, but the Queen is highly respected and loved.

Dunno about that. She has a reputation of being cold and distant. And when Diana died in that car crash, the Queen caught hell about her standoffishness to the point that she actually responded to public opinion. Might've been a first for her.
-
Good. The sooner Obama stops being regarded as President of the World, the better.

I really really really liked the comparison of the 0bumbles with the Beverly Hillbillies.
Damn, that was good.
-
Or how about "Ma and Pa Kettle Go to London"?
I'm not familiar with the old comedy series, but it seems to me there might be some similarities there, too.
-
And the Queen thought they were so special that for a gift she reached to her closet shelf and retrieved from her large supply an autographed picture of herself in a silver frame.

Fox reported a little while ago, per the White House, that Obamas' people asked the Queen's people what she wanted and it was an video iPod. (which is what she was given)
Hmmm....riiiiiiiiight...... ::)

I haven't heard that one yet. :-)

What a low-class sack of pigshit our "President" is. I wish the Administration would think of the LAST person they would ask about etiquette, and then actually ask them. We'd get a much better result. Dumbama is an embarrassment to this great country. If there's any silver lining to this whole debacle, it's that Obama is rapidly losing the British press.
-
At least the gift of comedy keeps giving.

At least the gift of comedy keeps giving.
It's almost hard to laugh about it anymore.
DVDs in the wrong format
button with less-than-savory translation
SOS asking who painted Our Lady of Guadalupe
iPod for the Queen, for God's sake
Have I left anything out?
Don't we have people on the payroll who research the protocol on matters like this?
And shouldn't those people have their asses tossed out onto the White House lawn?
Seriously. We have to sit threw 3.75 years of this, folks.
*grumbles and walks away*

She's had an Ipod since 2005, it's not impossible that's exactly what they said. She is an avid music lover. And he also gave her an autographed Richard Rodgers songbook. *shrug*

You find nothing wrong with our president, the President of the United States, presenting the Queen of England with an iPod?
My dad asks for socks and underwear every Christmas. That doesn't mean I buy it for him. There are just certain things you don't do--like buy underwear for your dad or an iPod for the GD Queen of England!!!

Actually no I don't. An updated Ipod filled with music, photos & video from her last trip, plus a rare autographed songbook for someone that's an avid music lover, I think it's a fine gift.
I thought the DVDs for Brown was in poor taste.
I really think it's much ado over nothing. *shrug*

Must be a real bear trying to get out of the palace to get down to the local Best Buy to purchase a new one.

Obama needs to appoint Martha Stewart to the head of the WH protocol office.

I really think it's much ado over nothing. *shrug*
Of course you do. I'm not sure why I even bothered to ask. :thatsright:

Mum, what's on your iPod:
* Photos from President Obama’s Inauguration
* Audio of then-state senator Obama’s speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and
* Audio of President Obama 2009 Inauguration Address

I wonder if he stuck an "I pledge to fawn over teh messiah" form for her to sign too ?

I regret this post. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, Mia. Sorry I was such a smart-aleck.

If Obama's people actually asked the Queen what she wanted, that's even worse than we thought. And I doubt that the Queen would even respond to such a stupid question.

Judith Martin, aka Miss Manners, lives RIGHT THERE in Washington D.C. They should ask for guidance. A gift to royalty shouldn't be like a Christmas gift to your relative. It's not like she needs more junk in the castle. It should be symbolic. My idea would have been to plant a rose bush in her honor in the WH rose garden, with a plaque saying so, and give her a picture of that. Dumb? Too cheap?
Anyway, gifting back the bust of Churchill, is the best answer so far (from page 1 Brit comments). :lmao:

I'm not so sure that Miss Manners is the right expert in this particular department. Sure, if I want to give a party or want to entertain, she's the one I'd ask if the small fork goes on the left or the right or up top of the table setting.
But we're talking about British tradition and British diplomacy vis-a-vis the monarchy. That's a different world altogether, I would think.
Jendf earlier asked in her list if there was some other kind of diplomatic gaffe she might've missed. The bust of Churchill debacle comes to mind. That one was outrageous, in my opinion. Even if His Holiness didn't want the bust in the Oval Orifice, he didn't have to give it back to PM Brown. That's just plain rude.
