This is a thread about the crazy new tax on tobacco to subsidize SCHIP. The expected banter ensues: self-righteous non-smokers and self-righteous smokers demonizing each other, mitigated by the occasional contribution of the of the ex-smoker. Not to mention the cracks about Fatty McBigMac spilling over his airline seat. But the nugget of irony doesn't appear until late in the bonfire:

56. Can we at least agree...
that there is something fundamentally wrong about taxing a segment of our population - any segment of the population - to pay for services which they, the taxed, are not eligible to receive?
Honestly, I quit smoking last year, so this tax doesn't affect me, but the hatred toward smokers does. As does the mindset of this tax.
It's just *wrong* to make "some" minority of people pay for services they themselves can't even receive. (Because the taxes are funding SCHIP, which is for children, who legally CAN'T be smokers.)

DUmmies are so hypocritical.
-
Thinking that the thread will quickly be avoided over there...logical thinking is like a cross to a vampire.

You got that right, Carl. Those threads dry up like tumbleweeds. Say, you're not in the 20th district, are you? How about BlueStateSaint?
-
If you don't use tobacco products then how is Obama gonna pay for SCHIP for poor children?
You non-smokers are a bunch of money-grubbing haters!!!
Tobacco: Do it for the children!

The 40,000 pound rodent in the room is the fact that "rich" smokers can go right on smoking and not be bothered by their dwindling weekly cash on hand because there is always more. The "poor" smokers, you know - women and minorities - are the ones getting screwed.
Where's the compassion? Where's the justice? Where's the peace?

Laugh it up now, but eventually the POOR smokers are going to demand that the rich smokers pay not only a disproportionate amount of the tax, but the rich smokers may be called upon to subsidize the smokes of the poor smokers. That just how DUmmienomics work.

Our esteemed and much-respected and admired colleague Carl is off-line as I read this, but yes, he is. muddyemms (BlueStateSaint) lives reasonably close, but in another congressional district.
I'm eagerly anticipating Carl's input on that congressional race, no matter how it comes out.

On the contrary, Coach. I voted for Jim Tedisco this morning at 7:07. I've met him, and both my wife and my mother-in-law work for him (indirectly). He's a good guy. Very pro-life--one of the times I met him was about 10-12 years ago, both of us praying out in front of an abortuary in his Assembly district.
Thing is, he probably won't be the Minority Leader of the NYS Assembly if he loses (even money) for a whole lot longer.
Also, if Scott Murphy wins, he'll get buried in 2010 when the hyper-inflation kicks in, and he is reminded of "supporting President Obama's economic policies," which will have gotten us the hyper-inflation in the first place.

Wait for whats coming next DUmmies - those who live in or are directly affected by Massachusetts policy are well aware of what Obama V1.0 (AKA Deval Patrick) has been doing.
Next on the hit-list is the junk-food tax. Oh, whats a pothead to do once the munchies set in ?

well, you know that Obie and his media minions will blame it on the corporations

Most independants are smart enough to realize that corporations don't make tax policy. The Obamessiah needs the independants.
As I type this, the margin is Murphy by 65 votes, with up to 10,000 absentee ballots to be counted. After Tedisco's collapse of the last couple of weeks, I was sure that I'd be waking up to a Murphy win by 3 or 4 percentage points.
