Title: Holy @#$%ing $#!+: Washington Assumes Control of ALL GM Upcoming Warranties
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on March 30, 2009, 08:46:28 AM
Quote
Obama will make two other announcements Monday.

One, the president will announce a new government-backed warranty program for all new GM and Chrysler vehicles purchased during this restructuring period. A fund will be set up equal to 125 percent of the total cost to pay for warranty service.  The auto makers will contribute 15 percent while the government will provide 110 percent, with the money coming from the economic stabilization funds, the gift that keeps on giving. A separate company will hold the funds and pay the claims even if one of the auto manufacturers goes into bankruptcy or out of business.

The president will also name a Director of Recovery for Auto Workers and Communities. Edward Montgomery, labor economist and former Deputy Secretary of Labor, will serve in the role, helping autoworkers, communities, and regions adversely impacted by the failure of the automakers find new jobs, businesses, and industries.

What this translates into is: anyone who has misgivings is going to avoid buying from GM and Chrysler during this restructuring period; which means they won't be able to restructure, their sales are going to plummet and go belly-up.

My money says the gov't will sometime in the next 6 to 12 months assume outright ownership rather than allow all those votes workers to go away. We are looking at GM/Chrysler turing into a massive welfare monster sitting idle pretending to be a viable business.

Silver lining: if we can play out the inevitable for GM/Chrysler it will become the perfect morality play as to why healthcare should not be consigned to these idiots.

Having the Government back the warrantees with all the crap that would probably entail is more of a disincentive to buying a GM product than the idea that GM might possibly default on them.

Just imagine the bureaucratic mess of trying to get timely repairs done.  Not only does 0bama own the economic mess, now, but it looks like he wants to own a car company, too.  If GM fails, it's his fault, no more blaming Bush.

Wow. I'm afraid to even ask about the back-room deals and under the table shenanigans that brought this to life.....scary.

Oh, just effin great.  I've got a Jeep that I bought a year ago.  So assuming Chrysler goes belly-up, as we all know it almost certainly will now, who is going to take care of THAT warranty?

Exactly. I bought a Toyota so I would have to spend money on repairs for a Chevy or Dodge. Now, I'm going to be on the hook for the repair of SOMEBODY ELSE'S P.O.S. American car.

Soooo, you need a new battery and brake repair.  Lets seeeeee here, yes, we can get you an appointment with a mechanic in 3 (business) months.  Please fill out the appropriate goverment application form # 9892834-002-032-01-10-302 and mail it in.  The wait time for parts after your first appointment will be approximately six (business) months, give or take two (business) months.  If your vehicle is in excess of 3 years old, it will likely be determined to be unsalvageable.  You will be required to turn it in, and purchase one from the approved list of vehicles, in approved colors of course.  The wait time for a new vehicle is approximately 12 (business) months, give or take two (business) months.  Payment will be required at the time your order is placed....no exceptions unless you voted for a Socialist Democrat.

I'm sure it would be basically the same as now.  The customer gets work done at a dealer (at the dealer's convienence) and then the dealer gets paid on the warranty work through the manufacturer, but the money will go from the govt to manufacturer to the dealer.

Miss Mia, please don't oversimplify, you know it won't be so easy and painless.  Warranties are a pain in the ass to deal with now, wait and see how federal beaurocracy deals with it.  I'm not touching any of it with a ten mile pole.  I've got a VW.

What about vehicle recall repairs?  That could throw another log on the fire.

Well, as an attorney, I can see the eyes of personal injury ambulance chasers across the country lighting up at the thought of the Feds getting intimately involved in management decisions with possible safety issues.  With these guys, whatever you do is basically wrong, the only way to handle them is to either go 'Scorched Earth' or go home, and the idea of being able to dip into the Federal pocket instead of stopping with GM will have them absolutely salivating.

If memory serves the trial lawyers are as big a contributor to the dems as are the unions. This would strengthen the relationship and the amount of money the dems and lawyers could trade with each other.

So do I, (2002 Cherokee), but I don't worry about repairs.  I always fix my own.  The only thing any of my vehicles have ever been inside a shop for were warranty recalls.

This whole thing reminds me of an episode of "Top Gear" I saw recently on BBCA.  They did a show about cars built in communist countries, titled "Have The Communist EVER Built A Decent Car?"  F'N Hilarious!

The first thing that comes to mind when I think "car" and "communist" is YUGO!

What will the incentive be for quality if there is almost no warranty cost to the manufactuers?

Get ready for alot of junk cars.
