"CARTHAGE, N.C. – Authorities say a man accused of opening fire in a North Carolina nursing home faces eight counts of first-degree murder.
District Attorney Maureen Krueger identified the suspect in the killings of eight people as 45-year-old Robert Stewart of Moore County. He also faces a charge of felony assault of a law enforcement officer.
Authorities say seven residents and one nurse were killed in the 10 a.m. rampage Sunday at Pinelake Health and Rehab in the town of Carthage, about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh. A police officer and several other people were also wounded before Stewart was shot and apprehended.
Authorities at an afternoon news conference said Stewart did not work at the facility and they don't believe he is related to any of the victims." WTF?  Not a worker, and not a relative of a patient?  Just some DU'er taking the initiative and implementing 0Bamas new health care for the elderly?

Lots of mass shootings going on lately.  Who needs Iran?  We're destroying ourselves from the inside out.

If that's the rifle used, it looks like a Remington Model Seven.  Bolt-action, short action length.  The rear sight bulge atol the barrel makes it look like that.  It's probably an aftermarket stock, but the front end of the stock is done in a way reminiscent of how the Model Seven's (early) stocks look.  I have one and that's how it looks.

It looks as if it's a very typical deer hunting rifle.

"Police: Gunman's ex-wife worked at nursing home
CARTHAGE, N.C. – Police are looking into whether a gunman accused of killing eight people in a North Carolina nursing home may have targeted the facility because his estranged wife worked there.
Police Chief Chris McKenzie says investigators are looking at whether what he called domestic issues may have been the motive for the rampage Sunday in the town of Carthage.
Police say 45-year-old Robert Stewart killed seven residents and a nurse at the Pinelake Health and Rehab center and wounded three other people.
The injured included a police officer credited with ending the rampage when he confronted and fired on the gunman, who was also wounded." Link (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090330/ap_on_re_us/nursing_home_shooting)

I feel for the families. I fear that this will be one more for the gun-control crowd.

I am more worried about the fact that mass shootings like this give political ammunition to the gun grabbers.

The thing is, if you look at the gun in the pic in the OP, it has the typical rear sight bulge of a Remington bolt action.  Seeing that the cop has blue (non-latex--I think they're "nalgene" gloves) gloves on, I'd say that he's trying to keep his prints off of it, which would lead me to believe that the rifle he's holding is the murder weapon.  It's a deer hunting rifle.  If it were an evil assault weapon, don't you think that that "fact" would be plastered across every news outlet in the world by now?  The possibility that it is a deer hunting rifle will slow the gun grabbers a fair amount, if only because it would probably fall under the aegis of Heller.

I believe those are Nitrile gloves.................yes looks like a Remington.  also notice the pistol grip on the stock, looks like enough to classify as an assualt weapon

It may slow them, but I do not doubt that this will become a statistic to be milked by people like Eric Holder who will say that bills like HR45 must be passed.

What pistol grip?  I didn't see one on the photo at the link.

It is in the picture. It is what , back in the stone age, was called a SEMI-pistol grip. I don't see a thumbhole that would make it a full pistol grip ...but then, the M-14 had no thumbhole, and there are idiots who'd call that an assault rifle. Rather than an infantry rifle.
