How is that disrespectful? It's only part of the lawn, it's not like the whole thing is now a garden.

Hell, up until about the begininning of the 20th century, the White House lawn was used for grazing livestock. This needs quite a bit of promotion before it rises to the level of a big f'ing deal.
-
When I heard she was doing this, I thought about that photoshopped picture that was making the rounds recently of the White House lawn covered with watermelons.
I couldn't help but giggle.

Jackie Kennedy had a nice and established garden remove in order to have a trampoline installed. This is nothing new.
She picked the area because it was hidden from the street by tall shrubs and some trees. Mrs. Kennedy remarked that all she wanted the public to be able to see was her head intermittently appearing above the trees.

This is nothing more than a PR stunt..............have a garden to supply the whitehouse kitchen and a local soup kitchen.....................last I checked the lawn isn't that ****ing big. This is nothing more than Schell looking like she cares and is doing her part............instead they are having Arugala imported with their Jap beef.
Bunch of damn amatuers

The Centerpiece of the garden. Too bad they won't end up eating out of trash cans.

There has been White House gardens before, not a big deal. Can't blame her for wanting to grow fresh veggies.

You're right. It's no big deal.
What stinks is that it has nothing to do with fresh produce and everything to do with symbolism. In other words, it's meaningless and unnecessary. It's liberalism.
BTW, the White House kitchen already gets the finest produce available every day.

it just angers me that they are trying to make the white house look shabby.

Oh, it won't be shabby. The US Parks Dept. oversees the White House grounds. Whatever "garden" develops will be picture-ready.
-
Pure pandering.... Nothing more, nothing less.

Not everyone can have a million dollar backyard garden. To break even, she will only have to sell the tomatoes for $350/lb :-)

Given what her husband is doing to the economy, that'll be a bargain compared to what they'll go for on the streets.
-
I think this is a non-issue...Plenty of real issues to pounce on.

Will she subject herself to the Food Safety Administration and pay $1M fines if her food isn't up to standards?
Oh, wait--silly me. Rules are for "little people".
-
....as if Shell would actually get her hands dirty... :whatever:

Which reminds me. Today would be a good day to start clearing off some of the land behind the yard, digging up the small stumps, and tilling it so it'll be ready after it thaws.

Yep! This will be the first time in 8 years I have had a garden. I forsee troubled times ahead. Between the garden and the deer and geese out back, I'm pretty sure we will make it thru it. Haven't had to have one since the big BJ left office. Now I'm not so sure.
During the BJ and Carter years, we did the same thing. Deja View anyone?

oh no...after all, according to her the french fries are the best she has ever had and she loves being able to get them at a moments notice. You know, all those duties of a first lady are so boring and her day is done by noon. A garden should help her fill up her time now. :-)
