FYI-Obama's Special Olympics Comment is no different than someone using the N word.
The disrespect is EXACTLY the same.
Yep. Saying you bowl like you are in the Special Olympics is JUST like calling someone a ******. :whatever:

1. No, the N word is almost always intended to offend.
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 08:17 AM by soothsayer
And on edit, I think those other words offend the FAMILIES of those concerned, not the people themselves.

7. I won't correct my kids anymore when they call each other
"retard". Since they don't mean it as offensive, they are just joking with each other. And I guess the phrase to "******-rigg" should be acceptable since it isn't meant as offensive.
It must be ok for us to do it if the president does it on national television.
Actually, I have a long list of phrases that I thought were unacceptable, until now.
Nice knowin ya Tim! "Chip, Chip, Chip..."

4. I totally disagree.
Apples and oranges. He was making fun of himself, not the special olympics children.
Word! Obama was just saying that he bowled like a retarded kid competing against other retarded kids. Because retarded people are subpar and bowling retarded people are exceptionally appalling at it and he bowls just like a retarded kid! No slur at all was intended. :-)

12. Please.
I'm well aware of the comments that adults and children make of special needs children and children who participate in the special olympics. I hear them made within earshot of my special needs child.
Sure. Right. NOBODY ever really means it. It's ALWAYS just an innocent comment. Always. Every single time.
That doesn't stop the real hurt though. I'm a grown man, but these "innocent" comments prick me to my core.

5. Oh, get a grip. It was self-deprecating humor, shouldn't have been said
by a President, but get some perspective here.
Okay. Imagine if Bush had said that he bowled like a retard. Think they would be so accomodating?

8. My perspective is having a child in the special oylmpics
She participates yearly and she loves it. Its one of the few joys in life that she gets.
As I'm learning about this my blood is starting to boil......
It is heartbreaking enough to hear other children make fun of special needs to children. I'm shocked beyond belief that my President is doing it now.

22. It's not innocent & they do mean it. The mentally disabled aren't people to them.
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 08:54 AM by earth mom
But say the N word or disrespect ANY other minority group here on DU and the knives come out!
Have you seen posts about teachers around here lately? If you dare to say that teachers share some of the blame about our crappy schools, all hell breaks lose! I know this because I dared to speak that truth!
But try to point out how total disrespectful Obama's comment was to the mentally handicapped/disabled and it's a non issue to some DUers.
Only their minorities or various assorted special people like teachers are important gawd damn it!
Sorry, don't think so!
Oh man. Don't be pointing at the naked guy in the crown Erfmom.

Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 08:26 AM by yodoobo
Is there a link on this??? Tell me its not true.
I have a daughter that participates in the special Olympics every year.
Jokes about that send my blood pressure skyrocketing.
(on edit I see that he did. I'm speechless and very angry. Not political anger, but hurtful anger. )

9. Intent Vs. Verbage
I have a close family member who is mentally handicapped...I've lived with many with disabilities in their lives and it's not words that offend, it's being ignored or excluded from the "real world". They are also some of the most forgiving and caring people as well.
Those who are out to make a stink about President Obama's remarks...IF they really care about the plight of the disabled...should be on their way to a nearby social agency or home and help to make these people's lives better. They'll donate not just a few bucks (which are desperately needed as its these people that have continously gotten the short end of the stick in federal funding) but some time as well. Then, once they can understand the world many of these folks live in, they can pass judgement on others.
No, it's no the "N" word...even the word "retard" (which I've seen used here) is not offensive if the person using it is not throwing it around as a perjorative.

I don't need to be told by you to go do my part because I am already working to make this persons life better.
My outrage and hurt about Obama's comment is real.
So spare me your little lecture.

24. What???
That's ridiculous. The Special Olympics is a fun series of competitive games that mentally challenged people participate in. The 'N' word is an ugly racist slur used to dehumanize and degrade a people. There is no comparison.

39. Oh for Christ's sakes?!
We know President Obama is not a bigot. He just doesn't have the history. Granted, I concur there will be those offended by this statement, but it is absolutely not the same as some asshat racist spitting out the 'N' word.
The Special Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for mentally challenged human beings to participate in games that they otherwise would not qualify to participate in because they are held to a significantly lower standard than most competitive challenges. That's all President Obama meant. Could he have used a better example in his attempt at self-deprecating humor regarding his low bowling score? Most certainly. Should he apologize? Yes. However, it's just silly to compare his blunt statement as being intentially hateful and meant to hurt. I will absolutely argue that his statement did not serve to dehumanize a single soul. ****. Sometimes it's a good idea to pick your battles, and place your outrage where it will do most good. This is just the silliest shit I've seen coming from someone supposedly on the left in years.
Nice. She just told her to shut up and get in the back of the bus! :whatever:

Okay, what history do we have of Obama's non-bigotry against people with special needs? Anybody?
I can't think of anything that he has done that would show that he is non-bigoted against everybody, maybe not against racial minorities, but other than that, nothing.. In fact, he went to a church for years that had a pastor who was bigoted against whites, which means that he apparently doesn't have a problem with bigotry against some groups.

Poor Little Goons! What a pickle they are in!
The neon-purple Mt. Fuji in the room that can't be ignored is the fact that if what was said by President Bozo on that NBC late night show had been said by ANY conservative, all phony righteous indignation HELL would be breaking lose and the story would be rode for days and days like a perpetual horse.
The Little Goons know this. Now they are faced with condemning their Sacred One Who Has Come To Save Them, or being consistent in their other beliefs that are so well-known due to years and years of their phony righteous indignation and years and years of their phony "concern" for all "special people".
What's a Little Goon to do? They are trapped in a dark idealogical box.

Well, bowl me over! (sorry).
Obviously this was unpresidential in the least, and cruel at worst. But, O has been cruel in the past, snarking on Jessica Simpson's weight, for example. I wish we had a Statesman for prez, I don't think that's too much to ask. This guy is just a goofball and a gaffe machine when TOTUS is on break.

Remember when President Bush was in China and tried to leave through a door he didn't know was locked? Remember how that was all over the news afterwards? All that was was a goofy moment and no one was hurt by it. President B.O. just insulted millions of people nationwide - not just the developmentally disabled, but the people who work with them, too (like me and my wife). Think it will receive the same sort of attention the China door incident did? Of course it won't and of the coverage it does get, the people reporting it will make their usual apologist remarks.

Dems are really, really, really compassionate as long as you stay in your little stereotypical box. Hell, the biggest insult they hurl at male conservatives is to accuse them of being gay. As long as gays are willing to take the little crumbs the left dishes out and not notice they're used as an insult, DUmmies will continue to pretend they care about gay marriage. They'd throw them under the bus the minute they outlive their usefulness. Same thing with O's comment. The left cares, dammit so it's impossible for them to insult anyone. Hell, considering their penchant for abortion and euthanasia I'm betting if they truly had their way we wouldn't have a need for Special Olympics because the participants would no longer be here. Margaret Sanger would be so proud, bless their little eugenic hearts.

There is the church, the "white man's greed keeps a world in need" statement, the "week old fish" comment when he spoke of Sarah Palin, the fat comment about Jessica Simpson, and now this about the special olympics. I know I'm forgetting one or two televised incidents regarding women. He seems to have a problem with whites, women, and special needs children.
Come to think of it, this is an opening for Sarah Palin to land some very hard jabs. I hope the next few days are entertaining.
