President Obama Jokes About Being a Bad Bowler: 'It's Like the Special Olympics'
The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

Way to go, Barry.

Idiot.

If President Bush had said that, they'd be calling it a hate crime.   :whatever:

It was billed as the first time a sitting President of the United States had ever appeared as a guest on a late night talk show.

And after Barack Obama’s appearance on last night’s edition of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, there’s also a good chance that it was the last.

Granted, the President - as always - was charming. Granted, he lit-up the studio with that Hollywood-grade smile. And yes, he explained the AIG crisis in clear, measured terms, and wisely backed away from a Congressional attempt to impose a punitive 90 per cent tax on unpopular bankers. (“I think that the best way to handle this is to make sure that you’ve closed the door before the horse gets out of the barn,” he said, calmly. “And what happened here was that the money had already gone out, and people are scrambling to try to find ways to get back [at the recipients.”) All in all, ‘Oboe One’ reminded severed million Americans, especially those who had crossed over from the other side, why they voted for him.

And then... he made a joke about the Special Olympics.

It just seemed to pop out of nowhere. One minute the President was being all warm and self-deprecating. The next he was making fun of the disabled.

Not even Mr Obama’s second-in-command, the apocalyptically hapless Joe Biden, could have snatched such a resounding defeat from the jaws of such a guaranteed victory. ...  “I imagine the bowling alley has been just burned and closed down,” said Leno.

“No, no,” replied the President. “I have been practicing... I bowled a 129.”

“That’s very good, Mr President,” said Leno.

And then it happened. Amid laughter, Mr Obama quipped, “It’s like - it was like the Special Olympics, or something.” And in the instant he said it, you could see a flash of realisation in his eyes: I’ve just mocked the disabled. On live TV.

Within minutes of the show going on air, the President's team were furiously clarifying the situation. “The president made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics,” Bill Burton, a White House spokesman, told reporters aboard Air Force One on the flight back to Washington.  ...

He's so articulate.

The White House reporter for NBC on the Today Show this morning, said to expect a Special Olympics event at the White House in the near future.....in a very sarcastic tone.

O's comment might have hit a very large nerve with a lot of people. I watched the show last night....he was making a joke.....the wrong one. :loser:

I think we know that the families of special needs children don't have the friend in the White House that they could have done.

It's a shame that no one in the MSM will mention the fact that Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin has a special needs child and would never have said such a callous thing.

Stupid ignorant ****head.  I am so, so tempted right now to go back on my word and say he's not my president.  I swore I was never going to be like the DUmp monkeys and say he isn't my president like they did with President Bush, but I'm teetering right now.

Both my wife and I work with developmentally disabled adults who could, have and do participate in Special Olympics.  Let me tell you all something right now.  129?  There are Special Olympics bowlers who could get twice that.  President (*spit*) B.O. wouldn't know that, however, because he sees people with developmental disabilities as people who should've been aborted.

So, Mr. Obama, I give you, your jackass "joke" and your spinmeisters' lame "excuse" afterwards a heartfelt and massive

**** YOU!!!!!

WASHINGTON, March 20, 2009 (AFP) – US President Barack Obama has apologized for the first gaffe of his presidency, after he joked about his bowling prowess comparing it to the Special Olympics for people with intellectual disabilities.

In his first appearance on a US late night talk show since his November election, Obama told Jay Leno he had been practicing at the White House bowling alley after he flopped at the sport during the presidential campaign last year.

"I bowled a 129," he said to laughter from the "Tonight Show" audience in Los Angeles.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno deadpanned.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president replied.

Realizing the joke had fallen flat, the White House moved quickly to downplay it and Obama late Thursday telephoned Tim Shriver, the chairman of the Special Olympics, from Air Force One on the flight back to Washington.

Special Olympics Champ to Barack: Bring it On!
Posted Mar 20th 2009 9:57AM by TMZ Staff

A bowling phenom in the Special Olympics has just challenged Prez Barack Obama to a White House roll-off ... and he'll probably kick Barack's butt.

Kolan McConiughey, a Special Olympics competitor who has bowled three perfect 300 games, tells TMZ that the Prez has to score a lot higher than 129 to beat him. Kolan says he bowls an average of 266.

Kolan -- who works at a grocery store in Ann Arbor, Mich. -- said he'd love to go to the White House to beat Barack on his own lane. Kolan said, "He's cool, but he can't beat me."

We posed the challenge to the White House. They said "no comment."

Special needs aren't funny, Mr. Obama
President Obama's ''joke'' was a knife-in-the-heart moment for many parents. (Larry Downing/Reuters)

By Marianne Leone
March 21, 2009

PRESIDENT OBAMA made an off-the-teleprompter remark on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Thursday that wasn't the least bit funny. Joking that his bowling skills were "like the Special Olympics" was one of those knife-in-the-heart moments that parents of mentally challenged children live with every day.

Obama's presidency was hailed for breaking stereotypes. We have had a disabled president - Franklin Delano Roosevelt - but the fact that he used a wheelchair was kept hidden.

Now we have a "cool" president, and racial slurs are supposed to be banished forever, but it's still OK to make fun of "retards." After all, our president does it. On national television.

All over the progressive blogosphere, the Obama supporters who retired to the fainting couch over racial slights are quick to tell the disabled community to "get over it."

But there's a difference.  These people are not physically or mentally disabled by any medical definition.  They are mentally disabled by choice.

What a great video.  I really miss what could have been  :innocent:

And what still could be.  This first time around, the way she was used by McCain made her a flash in the pan.  She has a real chance to actually step away from that during these next 3 years and make herself a viable candidate.
