Title: family too fat to work; claims welfare isn't enough

Oh my.

I forget; a "stone" is either 14 or 16 or 22 pounds.

A pound (the money, not the weight) is about $1.40, give or take a dime.

Quote
Family who are 'too fat to work' say £22,000 worth of benefits is not enough

A family of four with a combined weight of 83 stone say they are "too fat to work" and need more than the £22,000 they currently receive in benefits.

Philip Chawner, 53, and his 57-year-old wife Audrey weigh 24st. Their daughter Emma, 19, weighs 17st, while her older sister Samantha, 21, weighs 18st.

The family from Blackburn claim £22,508 a year in benefits, equivalent to the take-home pay from a £30,000 salary.

The Chawners, haven't worked in 11 years, claim their weight is a hereditary condition and the money they receive is insufficient to live on.

Mr Chawner said: "What we get barely covers the bills and puts food on the table. It's not our fault we can't work. We deserve more."

The family claim to spend £50 a week on food and consume 3,000 calories each a day. The recommended maximum intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men.

"We have cereal for breakfast, bacon butties for lunch and microwave pies with mashed potato or chips for dinner," Mrs Chawner told Closer magazine.

"All that healthy food, like fruit and veg, is too expensive. We're fat because it's in our genes. Our whole family is overweight," she added......

Photograph of the family, and more, at the link.

What are "bacon butties"?  Never heard of them.

A stone is 14 pounds.  A bacon buttie, is just slang fo a bacon sandwich. Funny how their 'genes' force them to go to  shops, buy junk food and stuff their faces.  :whatever:

There is nothing in that article that suggests any exercise....only their meal plans....

I have to ask. Are any of the residents of Skin's Island from England?

Their exercise seems to be hoisting grub from the table to their pie-holes.

All hail bacon porn.  No cheese needed--that stuff has too many nutrients to contaminate the bacon, dammit!

Strange. If a stone is 14lbs that guy weighs 336lbs. At my heaviest my weight was 350+lbs. I worked every day. When I decided to lose it I didn't become a health food nut, but I did eat a few more fruits and vegs than before. I also ate less junk food like potato chips and candy bars, and I cut out french fries and bacon. As long as I shop properly what I eat now costs less than what I ate then. Maybe things are different across the pond.

Here's the original article: http://www.closeronline.co.uk/RealLife/Reallifestories/were-too-fat-to-work.aspx?dateonline=Thursday+19+March+2009

Quote
Incredibly, the family refuse to diet, claiming their weight problems are hereditary – even though they spend their time watching TV and scoffing biscuits, crisps and sandwiches

“We love TV,” says Philip. “It’s on from the moment we get up. Often I’m so tired from watching TV I have to have a nap."

Philip, who’s 5ft 10, gave up his job as a lorry driver in 1997 after he developed type II diabetes because of his size.

Audrey last worked in the ’80s at a horse-riding school for a few months. But she hasn’t worked since she developed epilepsy and asthma over 16 years ago, both a result of being overweight.

Not really. The amount of money they are getting is plenty to be able to buy sensible nutritious food to cook from scratch which would be cheaper than convenience food.

Athsma maybe, epilepsy not quite.   Epilepsy is NOT caused by obesity, and is a serious disorder.

There are several people working at our local walmart at least that fat.  One has to use a walker but is still there every day doing their jobs.  I hate stupid lame excuses.

One thing mystifies me in that article, in which it is stated the family spends 50 pounds a week on food, or circa $70.

Now, surely for four people, that can't be right.

Probably a misquote.  They probably eat 50lbs of food per week, each.
