“The closet command-chair Trekkies have come out of the closet,†said Keith Marshall, 45, an unemployed phlebotomist, emergency medical technician, corrections officer and firefighter whose uncompleted chair, currently sitting in his brother’s garage, is slated for his own living room in Bonney Lake, Wash. “For a lot of people in the last few years,†Mr. Marshall added, “the pieces have come together.â€
“Everyone wants to sit in it,†said Bruce Boyd, an unemployed auto parts manager in Roseburg, Ore., who completed his chair — which he also keeps in the living room — in November. “There’s some sort of charisma there. It’s hard to explain.â€
And most, of course, indulge their fantasies, imagining doing battle with Klingons and otherwise cruising the cosmos. “Sitting in it,†said Mr. Bradshaw, the graphic designer, “I find myself striking an action pose quite unconsciously.â€
To his regret, he must strike those poses in his home office. “My wife is not big on it,†he said. “I’ve actually been threatened with divorce if it comes into the living room.â€

Well done Keith Marshall, unemployed at 4 jobs. Perhaps he should either spend time looking for a job or start making chairs for money.

I think everybody has their geek thing it is just some geek things seem normal, like having a toy train set in the basement or being a part of a Led Zepplin coverband or whatever. Some obsessions seem healthier than others and some seem stupider than others but really it's all about having an active imagination.
History had an interesting show on how William Shatner changed the world. A lot of people who were obsessed with Star Trek became scientists and invented Star Trek-like things.
The shame of it is Star Trek was just another not-so-veiled rip off of Lord of the Rings and people who dress up like Frodo get worse (deservedly).
When will there be mocking equity among the hierarchies of geekdom? Is there a hierarchy of illusion?

I'm a bit of a trekkie, but I don't dress up and I'm certainly not going to build a kirk chair in my living room.

I've seen most of the Star Trek series numerous times each episode. I've yet to dress up like one of the characters or have desire to build a set look-alike. Now, perhaps it might be cool to have a Chappa Eye...... :fuelfire:

I dressed up as Frankenstein's Monster a few times when I was a kid. I even built the headpiece myself but Universal Monsters are cool, Star Trek is just geeky

I've watched every episode of every series and seen all of the movies except for the newest one coming out. I'll see it when it's available outside of the theaters. Still I have never bought any Trek merchandise other than some novels based on the original series when I was much younger.

Of course not. Why only have a chair when it really needs the whole Bridge
