Reagan Wins on DU! Yep! Hello! Wake up folks
http://www.newsnet5.com/news/18910415/detail.html
This is the kid who died because his folks did not take him to the doctor. However, the reporter or court appointed something or other-- PAY CLOSE ATTENTION HERE-- looked in their checkbook and found out that they had a veterinary bill of
EIGHTY SEVEN ****ING DOLLARS for fleas.
****ing got that????
HOW THE **** IS THIS NEWS.
A vet bill VS HUGE bankrupting medical bills.
Let's all put on our thinking caps and be DOO-bees instead of DON'T--bees
Whadya say?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5235094
What kind of person would take their pet to a vet's office, and pay the bill, but not take their child ?
Better question what kind of person would support suck an action ?

1. Agreed
Maybe they should have left the fleas on the dog, so the kid would have had flea bites over him that turned into an infection, then they could charge them for neglecting that too, along with not being able to afford a huge bankrupting medical bill.

2. So someone thinks $87 would've saved this kid?
In our health care system? Seriously?
Idiots.
Now you completely miss the point here, which is very telling.

3. They didn't take him to a doctor. Once.
Didn't take him to the ER, nothing. Not once.
Yet, they were happy to take their pet to the vet.

4. And after reading ALL the posts on DU
about people who are afraid to go to the Doctor or Dentist.....think hard...think really really hard....
Why do you think that could have been?
Come on! The clue stick is tired, and the clue tree is going to drop on you!
There could be a reason!

7. You know what? You are right. So we have laws that make
people wear seat belts.
Laws that require helmets when riding motorcycles.
Stop signs!
ALL this shit because "people are stupid."
And yet, we expect....THE SAME DUMBASS MOTHER ****ERS TO TAKE THEIR KID TO A DOCTOR THAT THEY CANNOT AFFORD.
Do you get that?? Do you??/
There's laws about providing care to your children too, and it's these laws or them implementation of them that you seem to be objecting to.

11. Medicaid. The ER. A free clinic. ****, they could've done SOMETHING.
They're either evil or very, very stupid.
They are both.

8. No. Not really. There is not. Sorry. Beep. Wrong.
Broke is broke. Fear of broke is the exact same regardless of age.
Please spare me the "it's all about my children" stuff. That doesn't work all the time.
I really hope you never breed, or have responsibility for any life not your own.

9. If your financial well-being is more important than your child's life...

Then you aren't fit to be a parent. If you make the decision not to go to the hospital yourself that is an adult decision that you make yourself. When you decide to raise a child you have an obligation to protect that child.
Don't get me wrong, this still shows that our health care system is extremely ****ed up. But the parents are still negligent.

12. I'll go along with you on that.
Might even be the source of most of our problems. In my utopian world parenthood would be a privilege rather than a right.
You are a fascist piece of shit.

I'm sure the parents carefully considered the importance of protecting the child from fleas, as opposed to treating the child's lymphoma. Probably seems like an obvious choice to the DUer's, considering how they feel towards children.

Maybe the area where I live is different from where the DUmmies live. At my old job we had group health insurance. When I quit and started my own business one of the things that I couldn't afford was health insurance. While uninsured I had to go to the ER one night. I can't remember for what. They asked did I have insurance. I told them no. Then they treated me and sent me a bill. As money was tight at the time, I couldn't pay the entire bill. So I sent them what I could each month until it was paid. No problem. Keep in mind that even though this was after-hours it wasn't really a life-threatening emergency.
Sometime later I went to my personal doctor for the flu. During his exam I mentioned that I seemed to be urinating a lot. He took a urine sample and found blood in my urine. He suggested that I go to the hospital to have an IVP to check for blockages. I could have told him no, but I took my uninsured behind to the hospital. Still no problems.
My uncle was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 5 years ago. He had no insurance, not much of a job, and even less money. He got treatment and is alive and kicking today.
Granted, there are some problems with our medical system, but for the most part those problems are things like cutting a crazy woman's titties off because she thinks she's a male cat.

There's nothing in the news article to even indicate the parents were broke, you just dreamed that up based upon some posts you've claimed to have read from your trash bin brothers and sisters on Skin's island. Granted, to find out the parents of this child frequented the DUmp would not surprise me at all based upon the events and how they unfolded, but there's no evidence they didn't have the money or were afraid of going broke.
You lose............ again.

There are things medically that Mr Flame and I put off doing (dental stuff mostly) for OURSELVES due to finances, but we have NEVER skipped taking our kids. And while I don't take my kids to the Dr or ER for every little sniffle (I think we've been to the ER 5 time total for all the kids combined over the past 16 years), if they need to go, they go. Period.

Does this mean we need comprehensive pet-care now too so people can take make sure the kids won't catch fleas and DUmmies consider pets people too and shouldn't be forced to choose due to the evil legacy of George Bush?

You know every once in a while my car breaks. I have to take it to a mechanic and he actually has the nerve to charge me for it!!!!!!!! We need single payer mechanical coverage....NOW!
It really makes me mad when someone else won't pay for fixing my car.
You know what else? My refrigerator gets empty almost on a weekly basis and I have to go to the store and pay to get food that someone else should be buying for me. We need single payer refrigerator shortage coverage....NOW!

Some minor Goggle-Fu turns up: http://www.vindy.com/news/2008/aug/30/parents-under-investigation-in-death-of-son/?mobile
Trumbull County Children Services worked with Willie’s family to get him health care when they lived in Warren, north of Youngstown. The agency got involved after receiving a phone call about Willie in July 2007.
The boy wasn’t attending school and his health, along with the family’s lack of medical benefits, were a concern, said Marcia Tiger, executive director of Trumbull County Children Services.
A case worker visited them at least monthly and pushed the parents to do a medical follow-up on his swollen neck, obtain medical coverage and get him enrolled in school.
Hussing, 33, also known as Monica Boone, wanted to home-school Willie after a bullying incident on a bus. She agreed to get her medical benefits in order, but never followed up, Tiger said.
“They did not complete their case plan goals,†Tiger said. “It was like a cat and mouse game with our case worker.â€
Legal action was threatened. Then the family abruptly moved in mid-February.
They were evidently eligible for government paid healthcare, so even if they were too stupid or selfish to go into debt for their child, we'd have paid it for them. Whatever their reason was, it was NOT the fault of our healthcare system or because they "just couldn't afford it." ::)

Both, more than likely.
As an aside, but vaguely related, I got a bill for a doctor's visit for my daughter, on Wednesday. My wife was rather exorcised over a (stupid) NYS Health Department reg that the day care place had to enforce now. It had to do with the day care microwaving food that was provided for the child, from home. Anyway, I saw the bill, which was for $150, and I quietly put it into the car and figured that I'd inquire about it the next morning (yesterday). I made three phone calls at work and got the situation resolved. The bill had been paid by our insurance over a week ago, but there were two different computer systems involved, and one didn't talk with the other. But, I didn't panic and fly off the handle, or get the person at the other end to commit to wanting single-payer, or any other garbage. No cop jumped out of the bushes, and there were no conversions (probably because I work in a very liberal area). Zero bongs, but I wasn't going to write a bouncy anyway.

Wait just a minute! Aren't the fleas the dogs pets? :-)
