Where did the sudden need to "fix" schools come from?
And why is the only solution "merit" pay for teachers?

No one is carrying torches and pitchforks to fire all those engineers whose bridges have fallen down lately.

So, who is pushing this sudden interest in fixing schools using a "business is better" model all over the GOP-controlled media?

Who will benefit if this succeeds?

Anyone want to take a guess?

I just took time to read the whole thread - then I needed to look at the date in the posts.

They are all Blaming Bush for merit pay. Talk about being stuck in one's ways...

WASHINGTON--In a major speech on education, President Obama On Tuesday will push merit pay for teachers and upgraded "data systems" to track student and teacher performance. Money for that will be provided through the Obama stimulus package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Key proposal, according to the White House: "The President will teacher quality by dramatically expanding successful performance pay models and rewards for effective teachers, scaling up federal support for such programs in up to an additional 150 school districts nationwide."

Since everyone has blamed Bush for Teddy's NCLB for years now, teh O must come up with a distraction from the minor fact that more kids are getting the basics down, finally.   :-) :-)

Gee,who would have guessed that being rewarded for hard work and success on the job would make the primitives so upset?  :whatever:

They never cease to prove what a useless drain on society they are.

DUmmies, I'm dealing with the F#CKED UP school system right now. My child is in a Charter school (some Liberal BS had to be taken care of this past week, and was), and is doing just fine, but the ever changing, Gov mandated, testing(standardizing) B.S. is what is screwing up everything. Have you ever read that shite?
OH, the merit system? I'm all for it, it would have gotten rid of the POS 3rdgrade teacher my daughter had in the "regular" public school. You know, the one where we kept asking how our kid was doing, and got the canned answer, "just fine" yet she was almost failing.
This same "teacher" actually told us in a parent -teacher meeting, "I don't do anything out-of-pocket for the class. Anything we are short on is to be made up by you" meaning us parents. Folks, we are talking about everyday supplies, paper (construction), pens, glue, ect...  :hammer:
I think she was/is close to retirement and, judging by her attitude, diden't give a shit.

DC spends nearly $29,000 a yr per student. its ludicrous. probably the worst school system in the country too.
