My sister in law got hurt .... we need to fix health care in this country (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5210566)
She works for a good comapny, she has good "coverage," and she got "hurt" by our system ...
She was in a bike road race today and somebody fell front of her ......
not her fault but she broke her collar bone, her scapula, and her hand
... so what did the hospital do? X-rays and wrap her, tell her to call
an orthopedist monday morning, and sent her home.
Same hospital where she will see the orthopredist tomorrow ......
now my brother and her daughters will have to care for her tonight
and then load her up in the AM and drive her back to the same f***ing
place in the morning.
How about getting her a room where nurses can look after her,
her pain can be taken care of, and her doctors can see her in the AM?

20. I know it's very disturbing to see someone you care about in pain
but hospitalization for the injuries you've described really wasn't warranted. Hospitals are for acute care, meaning those who have immediate and dangerous medical issues that require 24 hour monitoring by a professional staff. It's very doubtful she would have been any more comfortable in a noisy hospital room (the noise never stops) with the uncomfortable bed, lousy television, awkward chairs for her loved ones and none of the comforts at home. Also, the truth is, IV pain management for her injuries would be only slightly marginally better at best than the drugs she took home.
Add to this the increased risk of hospital acquired infection like MRSA and It's much better that she went home, in her own bed, with her own food and the people that love her to tend to her.
I hope all goes well and she has a speedy recovery.

22. Not to be a prick but she doesn't really need a bed.
She is actually likely to be more comfortable at home. Regardless of the healthcare system in place it isn't likely that she would get a bed.

8. Hospitals don't admit unless a person is in acute crisis (or having planned surgery).
Edited on Sun Mar-08-09 06:36 PM by Avalux
They determined your sister's injuries could 'wait' until morning when the orthopedists get in; she was stabilized in the ER and sent home instead of occupying a bed. If she had required surgical intervention, the orthopedist on call would have performed the surgery and she would have been admitted.
I hate to sound harsh but hospitals aren't for people who can be managed at home. Besides - hospitals are havens for infections; best to be at home.
I'm sorry to hear this happened to your sister and hope she is feeling better soon; hopefully what I've said makes sense. Yes, some of it has to do with insurance co's not authorizing stays but most of it has to do with need.

18. So is the Universal Health Care argument here that...
under Universal Health Care they'll give anyone a hospital bed for any reason?
Really UHC sounds great - anything is fully covered, at any hospital/provider that you want, exactly how you want it done, at no cost to you including meds.

Hope this one had a sarcasm tag.

They won't do anything for a collarbone anyway, aside from maybe putting the harness on it to hold it place while it heals itself.
The DUmmies have once again proven that they know even less about health care than they do economics. The only matters for which they have even less knowledge are military affairs.
-
Need we mention that under a government run health care system, she would not have even been seen "tomorrow" for those injuries?
Because the hospital beds will be clogged with the bobbolinks of the world.

Broken hands/wrists need to wait until the swelling goes down slightly with ice, rest, and an anti-inflammatory before they cast it. You are right, the collar bone doesn't get anything but a sling. We went through this last summer after a football injury. My son didn't even get oxy for the pain he got tylenol. I didn't know I was supposed to throw a fit and blame Bush or universal health care about it though. :whatever:

Come back in 3 months for tests and x-rays and then another 3 months to see a specialist, if we say so.
-
Apparently those of you talking about collar bone treatment must've only seen simple ones. My oldest kid had one when he was small and that is how it was treated, but a couple of years ago he fell about ten feet head downward, and broke it into three or four pieces, and there was a lot more to treating that one. Had to cut it open and screw it all together, then take the ironwork out in another surgery later. However, everyone mocking the oP including most of the DUmmies is right, even that wasn't something calling for immediate hospiralization, just immediate treatment for pain then follow-up with the orthopedic clinic on their next business day.

And that's just if the sis doesn't smoke. Remember the British guy with the broken bone that was denied healthcare because he smoked...it wasn't worth the money to fix him.

There is not another issue that would make me throw my US citizenship papers in the trash can quicker and move to another country than socialized meds.

OMG her husband will have to take care of her???!!!! Those heartless bastards!!!

Where ya gonna go. It seems that every time a country gets a good health care system, leftists come along and socialize it. We're pretty much the last of the Mohicans. In other countries you either get socialized medicine, or none at all.

Like charity, liberals believe its someone else's job.

Wow, they gave him tylenol. All I got was instructions on how to hit so you don't break your collarbone. I feel cheated. :fuelfire:

Panama has a good health care system that is not inexpensive as ours and quite a few American Doctors.

I say old boy, The Dykes on Bikes rally seems to have gotten a little rough, huh.

The downside is that you have to live in friggin' Panama. I'd like to see the DUmmies' response when they actually get their "tax the rich at 90%" wish. So they go for open-heart surgery with a doctor that would normally pull down a half-million a year, but under their plan he's now making 50-grand. How good is a $50K/yr. heart surgeon really going to be?
-
What does this DUmbass thing would happen in a socialized medicine scenario? In Canada, the woman would have waited 8 hours in the ER before being x-rayed and wrapped, and her appointment with the orthopedist would have been six weeks out at a minimum. I know, because my step son broke his arm in Quebec, and that is exactly what we went through.
-
Damn! I cannot believe these idiots!
I have been in the hospital waaaaayyy too many times! Mostly over back surgeries. I have 6 screws in my back and one in my ankle. I would have liked nothing better than to have been an outpatient so I could sleep in my own bed, smoked when I wanted, and ate a damn hamburger once in a while! The only difference in meds was the morphine, right after you get out of your last operation. Have to admit, that was good shit!
-

Well, I guess there will be no such thing. Who would even go to medical school and pay the insurance premiums for chump change like that? In short, we will be SOL. As always, the laws of unintended consequences go wholly ignored.

Exactly. They just want us all to suffer equally.....because they're just so compassionate like that. They could care less if everybody gets health care, so long as they get to deny health care to the people they despise.

Well, malpractice insurance would cease to exist. After all, the federal gov't is not going to have a law that permits itself to be sued for malpractice - and all doctors would be government employees.

John Edwards will be filing for unemployment?

You'll keep forgetting that their will be a 2 tier health care system. One for the politicians with gold star benefits and physicians and the other for us peasants with shitty care.
