WASHINGTON (AP) -- The person Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wanted as his chief deputy has withdrawn from consideration, dealing a setback to the understaffed agency as it struggles to address the worst financial crisis in decades.Annette Nazareth, a former senior staffer and commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, made "a personal decision" to withdraw from the process, according to a person familiar with her decision.
The decision followed more than a month of intense scrutiny of her taxes and multiple interviews. No tax problems or other issues arose during Nazareth's vetting, said the person, who requested anonymity because Geithner's choice of Nazareth was never announced officially.
"She did put a great deal of consideration into the potential of taking the position, and she concluded that she really enjoys what she's doing now," this person said.
Though popular in policy circles, Nazareth has drawn criticism for her role in creating what some considered to be lax oversight of the banking industry. ...

It gets worse
...In addition, Mr Geithner's pick for Undersecretary for International Affairs, Caroline Atkinson, has also withdrawn her name from consideration.
The withdrawals are the latest stumbling block for Mr Geithner, who has worked feverishly to build up the most senior ranks in his department amid the worst financial crisis in decades.

Based on a little inside information......it appears that every financial guru in the country is taking a long look at the messiah's fiscal policies, and has opted to run like hell from these jobs......
It is also noteworthy that the messiah's pick for Surgeon General has also taken a pass.......
I suspect that they will be difficult to fill, based on Gietner's public pronouncements and his handling of the economic situation so far.......I wouldn't want to be anywhere near this administration when it implodes.....and it is going to implode......

That sounds very likely, I saw a post on HotAir that was saying that Gupta likely bailed out because he didn't want to take a big pay cut at a time when his investments would be tanking. He is going to be desperate for appointees soon.

I suspect that you are correct........however......unfortunately this will result in the folks that will actually TAKE these jobs being either affirmative action retreads, or clueless simpletons.....either way, we lose....
