CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, has withdrawn his name from consideration for surgeon general, the network and the White House announced Thursday afternoon.
The announcement comes after FOXNews.com reported that Gupta had misgivings about the offer from President Obama and was expected to refuse the position.
CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer said on air Thursday afternoon that Gupta decided that he wants to continue with his medical career and his job at the news network.
"He is a practicing neurosurgeon. He also wants to spend more time with his family -- his wife is expecting another child right now and, of course, he does want to continue as our chief medical correspondent here at CNN," Blitzer said.
The head of the group that represents the surgeon general's health team earlier told FOXNews.com that Gupta was known to have withdrawn his name.

Exactly - Translation, "I have this old tax issue..."
:rotf:

Then again, some of these nominees might be thinking, "Man, no f'n way do I want to be part of that trainwreck". I heard a Geitner appointee bailed today.

Geitner's entire senior management team is unstaffed right now. I think he has filled the positions for TWO senior deputies, out of several dozen. I can't help but think that the tax cheat thing is behind the reticence of dems with the proper background to agree to the scrutiny.

I wish I had thought of this line:
We know Obama isn't Jesus, because Jesus knew how to assemble a cabinet.

I truly believe this is the reason people keep rescinding their bids. They may have been onboard before the election..but once he unveiled his true plans...bye bye..

he ran in the primaries as an extreme leftist. he ran in the general as a centrist. and the only people that knew he HAD to be a liar on that account were those political junkies, like us, that pay attention to this 12 months out of the year.

Stolen.

I completely agree. I really think that people who didn't imagine O as extremist as he is are now trying to cautiously distance themselves. Seeing how destructive he truly is has made people afraid to be associated with him. At least the ones with half a brain anyway. Those who see nothing but power will still grab what they can.

Taking bets on when he nominates Jocelyn Elders...

She would be appropriate for this circle jerk.

H5 despite the painful hard swallow of coffee I had to endure when I read it. (at least I saved the keyboard)

H5, Defiant1!
I think you can change your newbie avatar soon, I hated it too, especially as a woman.
I agree with Tess, the power-hungry will grab what they can (and these people make me sick). The thoughtful, long-range planning types will foresee a future resume. They are getting cold feet over the likely prospects. Especially when it comes to financial matters, which can be measured, unlike some of the "softer" sciences.

Subtle.
