Title: Going Galt
Post by: ReardenSteel on March 04, 2009, 06:05:33 PM
“Going Galt:” America’s wealth producers vs. wealth redistributors
by Michelle Malkin

Quote
Enough. In a word, that is the message of disgusted taxpayers fed up with the confiscatory policies of both parties in Washington. George Bush pre-socialized the economy with billion-dollar bailouts of the financial and auto industries. Barack Obama is pouring billions more down those sinkholes. The camel’s back isn’t just broken. His neck and four legs have all snapped, too.

Enough. While they take to the streets politically, untold numbers of America’s wealth producers are going on strike financially. Dr. Helen Smith, a Knoxville forensic pathologist and political blogger, dubbed the phenomenon “Going Galt” last fall. It’s a reference to the famed Ayn Rand novel, “Atlas Shrugged,” in which protagonist John Galt leads the entrepreneur class to cease productive activities in order to starve the government of revenue. (Not coincidentally, Rand’s novel sales are up and John Galt references punctuated many of the Tea Party demonstrations.) Dr. Smith was inundated with stories like these:

Quote
“I have frozen hiring in my firm…No investments will be made in taxable accounts (only 401k/IRAs). I am buying silver and gold instead of CD’s or stocks with non-qualified money/savings. I have stopped taking new clients (thus freezing my income). I barter more and more. Spend less. I stopped Leveraging assets (don’t borrow).”

“I have cut WAY back–I’m no longer buying retail, driving out of a 10-mile radius, spending money on eating out, and am no longer putting my money in a savings account. I am using the money to pay off all of our debt. It has made our family closer, more appreciative…”

You have to go to the link to read more examples like the above of people "going Galt". Have you had enough yet? Also there is a great video, a few actually, but click on the first one for sure.

Smart Girl Politics put together a nice video of the nationwide Feb. 27 Tea Party protests:
It's an inspiring video set to a great version of "This land is my Land" filled with Tea Party pictures. I would bring it here but You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25By8Nyk5ls&feature=channel_page) killed the audio, they say, for copywrite reasons. Anyway, I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty close to going Galt myself. (or perhaps in my case... staying Galt)

And so it begins.

From The John Galt speech.

Quote
This is John Galt Speaking. I am the man who loves his life. I am the man who does not sacrifice his love or his values. I am the man who has deprived you of victims and thus has destroyed your world, and if you wish to know why you are perishing - you who dread knowledge - I am the man who will now tell you.

Quote
You have heard it said that this is an age of moral crisis. You have said it yourself, half in fear , half in hope that the words had no meaning. You have cried that mans sins are destroying the world and you have cursed human nature for its unwillingness to practice the virtues you demanded. Since virtue, to you, consists of sacrifice, you have demanded more sacrifices at every successive disaster. In the name of a return to morality, you have sacrificed all those evils which you held as the cause of your plight. You have sacrificed justice to mercy. You have sacrificed independence to unity. You have sacrificed reason to faith. You have sacrificed wealth to need. You have sacrificed self esteem to self denial. You have sacrificed happiness to duty.

You have destroyed all that which you held to be evil and achieved all that you held to be good. Why then do you shrink in horror from the sight of the world around you ? That world is not the product of your sins it is the product and image of your virtues. It is your moral idea brought into reality in its full and final perfection. You have fought for it, you have dreamed of it and you have wished it, and I- I am the man who has granted your wish.

Powerful and prophetic words indeed.

DU hears about "going Galt" (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5191436)

They react pretty much as you might expect. They miss the point, wish us all death, jokes and most of all, ignorance.

7. Whatever would we do without the RRRW?
Oh yeah. We'd have equal rights, a vibrant economy, peace, universal health care, etc. What a pity.

13. What a Laughable Idea
If justice is served at all, these overpaid blowhards are going to see their taxes going very high, so they won't be able to "withdraw" from anything.

22. Works for me. There's a lot of untapped talent waiting at the bottom,
held down by useless, wealthy, talentless snots who were born with the "right" last name.

35. Withdrawing from the economy would be a good first step.
First the economy, then the country, then the planet.

37. Then I take it that they won't be voting from now on, either
Elections happen and they lost. Instead of developing a better philosophy and message along with a candidate to carry that message, they choose to try and break our country into bits.

Like David Sirota told a wingnut on the radio this morning - "Then maybe this country is not for you."

50. Send them all to North Dakota, wall it in with a waterproof barrier, and divert the Mississippi.

Wow.  :-)

go for it DUmmie, that river starts in a different state.  besides, old man river that far north is pretty feeble, less than a foot deep and 10 feet wide.  ****in retard, at least study a little geography before you speak on the subject.
