Pelosi tosses cold water on assault-weapon ban

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tossed cold water on the prospect of reinstating the assault weapons ban, highlighting Democrats’ reluctance to take on gun issues.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat “no” when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.

Pelosi actually gets it.

4. Thank goodness

The last thing Obama needs is the distraction this would cause.

11. In one sentence, you summed up the political realities quite adeptly.

It would be a HUGE distraction. Fat Jesus-loving fundie ladies in flowered frocks, who never held a weapon in their lives, would suddenly be POUTRAGED at their inability to purchase an assault weapon. Senator Bonehead Boehner would get all red under his fake tan as he pounded the table (wheezing and secretly wanting one of those farty English cigarettes he smokes) and insist that 'life as we know it' is doomed, I tell you, DOOOOOOOOMED!

Of course, there will be people who don't understand that refusing to take this issue up is a TACTIC, not a philosophy.

5. this is definitely the wrong time to worry about banning assault weapons...there are SO many bigger fish to fry- and all this will do is to give the opposition forces a toe-hold to rally their mindless minions.

6. GOOD!

She knows perfectly well, that Scary Black Weapons are a third-rail issue for the Democrats.

The original "Assault Weapon" ban didn't make any sense, contributed in part to the 1994 electoral defeat by the GOP, and is just a bad idea all around. We've got bigger fish to fry.

Interesting.  Even the DUmmies realize Holder is dangerously unsophisticated politically, though of course they don't put it in those terms.

I wonder why this is? Are they going to try and get taxes raised on ammo and other underhanded crap like that?

They might try it, but I think the firestorm that they seem to know that they would cause wouldn't be worth losing the House and Senate in 2010, and there would be angry gunowners voting straight-line Republican down the ticket, too.  So, they'd most likely lose a few State houses, and a few governorships, that they didn't plan on losing.

And the stage would be set for 2012, when the Republican ticket (no matter who is on top) will probably win, and of the 33 US Senate seats up for re-election, 24 of them have to be defended by Donks.

I'm pretty sure even these idiots have been watching the increases in gun and ammo sales. Pretty hard to miss it!

Wonder what that could mean? Heh!

It also means Pelosi doesn't have the votes to even consider it and she knows it.

Meaning that, on some things, the Blue Dogs have bite.

Also, there's this gem from The Hill:

Reid joins Pelosi in opposing weapons ban revival

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will join House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in opposing any effort to revive the 1994 assault-weapons ban, putting them on the opposite side of the Obama administration.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the Nevada Democrat will preserve his traditional pro-gun rights voting record.

"Sen. Reid would oppose an effort [to] reinstate the ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future," Manley told The Hill in an e-mail late Thursday night.

It was not immediately clear whether Reid would block the bill from the Senate, but his opposition casts serious doubt on its chances. Also, Manley noted that Reid voted against the ban in 1994 and again when it expired in 2004.

Reid's stance joins him with Pelosi, who told reporters Thursday that the administration had not checked with her before Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters the administration would attempt to reinstate the ban. Pelosi gave a flat “no” when asked if she had spoken to Holder or any other administration officials about the issue.

Maybe they really do remember 1994.

How come they don't discuss the fact Obama--whom they regularly concede Obama is suppose to be smarter than they are--ran as an ardent supporter of gun rights?

Why not talk about why Obama is such a flagrant liar?

Wouldn't it be great for Republicans to be openly painting Obama as an anti-gun hypocrite and liar.  Alas, we have idiots to the left and cowards to the (nominal) right.

There was something on Bloomberg's site yesterday about the stocks of Smith & Wesson and Ruger going like gangbusters.  Even Cabela's is going well, with same-store sales in December up 2.2% from last December.  The gun industry is about the only part of the economy that is doing well.

Let's give the democrats credit where it's due.
