Title: Tennessee may reject stimulus aid for jobless

Tennessee could reject a portion of the $787 billion economic stimulus package out of concerns that it would force the state to raise taxes on businesses in the future.

At the National Governors Association meetings in Washington, D.C., Gov. Phil Bredesen said this week that he might turn down relief for unemployed workers worth an estimated $143 million because of conditions placed on the money by Congress.

The stimulus package would also raise unemployment benefits by $25 a week for all workers, but in addition, lawmakers want states to expand the pool of people who can apply for benefits. That would put more pressure on an unemployment trust fund that is already trying to stave off insolvency.

"We are evaluating this piece of money, whether it makes sense for us to take it," Bredesen said in an interview Monday with the Chattanooga Times Free Press. "We're in the position of going back to our legislature this year for changes in our tax structure just to keep our fund whole, and taking it to a new level may be too much of a lift for the legislature this spring."

Balanced against that is the boost the state's unemployment fund could get from the stimulus package.

Now, the various governors' resistance to the stimulus is bipartisan!

He's a Democrat, too.  But, Dems being Dems, let's see how long he holds out.

Chucky Shumer was quoted whining that "this isn't a %&^(*)*(* ala carte!  You can't just pick and choose.

If he wants the individual states to accept or reject it all up or down, then my vote is for all down, personally.

I was surprised to hear this.....but this is a state with Republican Senators and mostly Republican Representatives....yet people voted for a Democrat for Governor and he's done a pretty decent job.

Rumors were that Obama is looking at him for the Health etc cabinet position.

E TN has a huge Mexican population...wonder if that had anything to do with his decision?

I've heard mostly good things about Bresden. Of course a TN Dem isn't the same as a San Fransisco or New York Dem.

Yeah, I volunteered for his failed 80's campaign. *runs and hides now* I was talked into it by my political science teacher my senior year of high school. She was a hippe bra burner who LOVED Al and had him come to our school a time or two. We got extra credit for helping the campaign. True story...Al Bore is a distant relative. On both my mother's side and father's side. I thought it would be a great chance to meet this long lost relative and introduce myself. He knew who I was once I told him the family connections.

He's as boring as stale toast.

I can't say that I blame him.

I heard Gov. Jindal on Hannity yesterday and he was saying that this temporary money would require a permanent change to Louisiana stat law.

I'm guessing it's the same for any state that takes any part of this Porkulus Bill.

Personally, I'm delighted to see that at least two governors (so far) aren't devouring that dangling carrot. That damned carrot has razor blades sticking in it.

The Tennesse Gov make the third one for sure.  Texas is not going to take any either.

The only one still on the fence is a guy named Sanford. (looks at Rebel)  :uhsure:

Granholm and Schwarzenegger are demanding those state's share of the funds.  Maybe if they would govern instead of finding new ways to spend money, their states wouldn't be such shitholes.

CA really doesn't have much choice....their coffers are empty and the state is broke.

The US Treasury's coffers aren't looking that much better.  All that's in there is a note:

Sometimes good leadership is about saying "NO"
