Obama to address Congress, nation on economy
WASHINGTON (AP) - Barreling ahead on a mammoth agenda, Barack Obama is ready to offer a detailed sketch of the first year of his presidency, casting the nation's bleeding economy as a tangle of tough, neglected problems. In a prime-time speech from the House of Representatives, Obama will make his case Tuesday that much more has to be done to turn around the economy—a message he knows he must explain.
Already, the nation is nearly dizzy keeping up with what's emerged from Washington during Obama's first weeks as president, from a staggering $787 billion stimulus plan to a revamped bailout for the financial sector to a rescue plan for struggling homeowners.

Obama will make clear that the trillion-dollar-plus deficit is one he "inherited." In other words, he wants to remind people that President George W. Bush and the previous Congress left him a big hole, forcing him to pursue the costly stimulus package.

Asked in an MSNBC interview how the president plans to make good on his pledge to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term, Gibbs said, "The biggest thing we're going to do is cut the amount of money we spend each year in Iraq."

I can't wait to hear how he's going to cut spending while the dims in Congress are planning even more billions in spending. Spin like that could wipe out an entire city (like Katrina in New Orleans).

Putting Us on a Path to Growth for Generations to Come
To grow the economy for the long-term and make the investments that will enable America to lead for generations to come, we must make the transformative investments that all Americans know are necessary. The American people know that we are dangerously reliant on foreign oil; that our health care system needs to cut costs for families and businesses; and that our education system needs to be reformed so that all of our students can compete in the 21st century.
Tonight the President will call on Congress and the American people to confront these challenges, take the steps required to bring fiscal stability and grow our economy over the long term.
Specifically, he will make the case for:
• Reform the health care system, reducing costs and increasing coverage.
• Make our country energy independent while creating a sustainable clean energy economy for the 21st century.
• Modernize our education system to foster economic growth and competitiveness now and into the future.
These investments are essential, but so are hard choices.
Addressing our Fiscal Crisis is Key to Long Term Recovery
While investments must be made, hard choices are necessary. Our fiscal crisis is an economic threat that must be dealt with. Responsibility means spending wisely and making sure that no corner of the budget escapes reform. Yesterday, the President held a Fiscal Responsibility Summit where he talked about the need to deal with challenging issues that have been avoided or kicked down the road for too long. As part of the conversation started in that summit, the President made three commitments:
• His budgets will be honest and not rely on gimmicks to hide or mask deficits
• Bring responsibility back to budgeting by paying for new programs (PAYGO)
• Reduce the deficit by half in his first term
Tonight, the President will talk about some of his plans to address these challenges and later in the week we will see his budget that will reflect this vision.
Wrap up
The President will make the argument that addressing our fiscal and economic crisis in the short term is critical and laying the foundation for long-term growth in the 21st century is essential. It is because of these twin imperatives that we must do all we can to change the way Washington works to get our economy back on track and put us on a path to fiscal solvency that is honest, transparent and accountable to the American people.

I was going to suggest doing the Big Zero drinking game. Every time he says crisis you take a shot.
