TALLAHASSEE — The election of Barack Obama has been a boon for gun dealers, and with more than 200 gun shows a year, few markets are hotter than Florida.
Floridians in record numbers want to carry concealed weapons, a trend linked to a surge in crime, economic anxiety and fears of stricter gun laws.
And now the state is buried under a backlog of 95,000 applications for concealed weapons permits, and it needs to hire a lot more people to handle the paperwork. A legislative panel Wednesday gave Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson the okay to spend $3.9 million more so he can hire 61 temporary workers.
"Once the economy gets bad, crime always goes up," said Bronson, a certified police officer. "People get desperate whenever things are not going the way they feel like they should be going, and they'll do things they normally wouldn't do."

I wonder if this is happening in other states with conceal carry laws.

Hi thundley,
My wife is one of those folks.
At $110/ each that is a nice boon for a state with budget problems. I would also guess a large percentage of those applying are women.

ps: AFTER REREADING THE ARTICLE, IT REALLY PISSED ME OFF. THIS IS A TYPICAL LIBERAL PAPER IN THE STATE CAPITAL....SINCE FLORIDA PASSED THE LAWS THAT SAID ONE HAS A RIGHT TO DEFEND ONSELF, VIOLENT CRIMES WERE DOWN 17% BASED ON THE LAST FBI STATS THAT I SAW.....

Nope. NH is a shall-issue state. I filled out the paperwork, took it down to the police station with (IIRC) my $10 fee, and two weeks later had my permit.
Good until 2011, and I fully intend to renew as long as I can.

I don't know what the status is in Minnesota now, but there is a law written into the MN carry permit law stating that the state (actually the Sheriff) has 30 days to get the permits approved or disapproved and returned to the applicant. I know that some counties, mainly Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, are often in violation of that law. I need to obtain my Texas permit, but I'm kind of waiting on the open carry bill that is in front of the Texas Legislature.

It's kind of expensive and a bit tedious to get one here in MO, but not particualrly slow. Takes a couple of weeks from the time you get everything you have to have turned in to the Sheriff.

Mine was 10 bucks, plus about 20 for the fingerprinting. Went to the courthouse on a Tuesday and it took about 10 minutes. It came by mail that Saturday.

MO is reciprocal with OH, where I got my CCW last year, so I have no need to "transfer" for another 4 years.
After that, it's every 3 years.

Hi,
I got a card at our recent gun show from one of our elected representatives. On the back is a US map and it highlights the states that have recripocal rights. As of April last year there were 40.
If anyone wants to see it I can probably copy it, try to blow it up a bit and post it.
