I want to buy a new camcorder...hard drive model, with a good optical zoom and easy editing/burning dvd capability. Seriously, my brain is melting from reading all these comsumer reviews, etc. Seems some people love certain ones, but others hate them.
So, I'm asking you guys...what do you have and what do you love and hate about it?
Mostly I would be using it to record sporting events and dance stuff. typical family stuff. But I want to be able to edit/make movies, etc.

Don't have one. I find my digital cam works quite well for short videos (up to an hour on a 1 GB flash card).

My digital camera is an SLR, so no video mode.

Flame - I was in the same boat and begged my hubby for a digital video camera last Christmas. I got a really nice one that's easy to use. I am having problems figuring out the dvd functions but that's mainly due to the fact that I started uploadng everything to my laptop before realizing it can't burn dvd's. I'm too lazy to transfer everything over to the big PC but next time I have stuff to download, I will. The software that came with it is so easy and it only took me a few minutes to figure it out. There is a also a "burn DVD" button on the camera. I just need to do it on the other PC.
I have a JVC GZ MG330RU
It's easy to use, very intuitve and lightweight (fits in my purse). The little flip screen controls the power so you don't have to keep hitting a power button.
The digital picture function is so-so (no flash) but I already have a digital camera.

What's the battery life like?

It seems to be okay for my purposes. I used it all day with no problems. It did go into low battery mode but kept on recording. I may not have had it fully charged before we left though.
Hubby wanted to buy a second battery but I didn't want to spend the money. I may do it down the road.

We have nothing but good experience with my JVC Hard-drive camera. We have had it about a year and a half. I am sure the next generation is out, but I would assume the new one is as good or better than the one I have.
