I finally got around to filling out my facebook profile and adding friends. (Sorry FD :-)) Some of you have friended me and I appreciate it! If you want to friend me and haven't, PM me.
Anyway, the purpose of my post is to share something about a long lost high school friend I reconnected with. He is in the military and deployed in the Middle East. I sent him a PM to tell him 1. I was glad we reconnected after all of these years, etc.. 2. I was very proud of him for serving our country and I told him how much support he had here at home.
We talked a little bit about the world in general and of course politics. He was so grateful to hear me say how much our troops are loved and supported back at home. Honestly, it really hit home for me. I have friends and family in the military but this is different. I don't have anyone currently in the M.E.
Pardon my rambling :-) He told me this -
"It is my honor to serve this Country and you.
Thanks for the nice words in your letter and I too have lost touch with a lot of people. But being on FaceBook, I have found many like you." (I then offered to send a care package because I used to do Adopt a Soldier and don't have anyone right now)
"I am open to whatever. It is a morale booster just to get a little piece of home in the mail. Whatever you would like to send is good enough. I know that there are Soldiers here that would like care packages as well so, if you know anyone that wants to send them anything, just let me know." There is one Soldier here that is dying to have the Harritage Farms Summer Sausage and Cheese package with ritz crackers. I think it sounds funny but, you just never know. This is great that you are doing this. Thanks so much for taking care of my guys and gals."
I'm going to send a care package. I'd like to ask you guys to post some words of gratitude and encouragement and I'll print them in stick them in the package. Also, if you have any ideas for the care package itself, let me know. I've done this many times and know the drill in terms of do's and don'ts and likes and dislikes. But I'm open to creative ideas.

Remind him that what he's doing, both as a representative of the American military, and as a decent and civilized individual, does the world a whole lot more good than all the politicians, financiers, diplomats, put together.

Small packets of quality baby wipes. (Unscented) good pens and a mechanical pencil or two. Small pocket sized note books. A one gallon ziplock with a small writing tablet, envelopes and matching stamps. Empty one and two gallon ziplocks. AA and AAA batteries. A box of various sized bandaids. BEEF JERKY! Powdered energy drink packets like Crystal Light, Gatoraide or Propel that are designed to be disolved in bottled water. Canned meats. Hand sanitizer caution bagged in a ziplock. Ensure clear fiber powder. Immodium. Hard candy. Gatoraide powder in the big cannister. Microwave popcorn. Phone cards. Beanie Babies or other small toys to pass out to the local kids. Also a decent quality LED Headlamp. Gold Bond Medicated Powder.

Tell him that former US Army SGT rich_t, (Gulf War vet) sends his heart felt thanks and graditude for the sacrifices that he and his fellow soldiers are currently enduring on my behalf and on behalf of our nation.

We got pretty good at putting gift boxes together in '06. A son of a friend had his MAU platoon deployed for six months and every four weeks or so we would ship a big box to his platoon commander with 30 odd care bundles in it. "Our" platoon came home without a single serious casualty.
I've also adopted military folk through Soldier's Angels.
Ramen Noodles and bottles of hot sauce are always winners as well.

I've sent to both Marines and Army over there.....know it might sound dumb...but I went to the Dollar Tree (yes, one of my favorite stores) and hit the toy aisle.
I found little cars that held 2 AA batteries and the guys could race them against each other (M and I sent to 14 in one group...we knew who one was and asked for a list of those who didn't ever get packages)....and sent an extra batteries in each box. I also found little stress reliever balls....they came as baseballs, soccer, golf, basketball, and tetherballs....so not all of them were the same thing.
I also bought a bunch of different candies...and bagged them up in baggies, so that they got a mix of stuff instead of just one thing.
We also did a box of paperbacks, and one of game stuff. I found poker chips, cards, dice, and puzzle books that I just put in one box.
The Dollar Store is a great place to pick stuff up.
My son was in the Navy....and could pretty much get whatever he wanted....whenever he wanted it.

I will do so.
He get's embarrassed when I do that.
He tells me "Dad, that's my job."
I understand... I felt the same when I was over there in 90-91.
I was merely doing what I was being paid and trained to do.
But I have a much better understanding of what my parents had to live with during my own deployment.

My boss's son was deployed to Iraq three times and she sent lots of toys. I guess he and his mates absolutely loved them. It passed the time I suppose.
