Moronic Siblings
I posted a bit of the afterthoughts about a conversation with my brother this last weekend elsewhere but there were some gems from the conversation itself that didn't fit that forum I'd thought I'd share. In forward, he's a rabid far right wing repub fundamentalist. Use your imagination, then go two steps further right.
About 2 months ago he had come down to visit my sister who lives cross the street from us. We went across the street to say hi. I had a headache that day and wasn't very social. Told him I had a headache and he (I swear) snapped his finger, pointed to the ground and said something like "god I command that headache to be healed....etc etc etc".
I suggested to him that he might be dyslexic in that snapping your fingers and pointing to the ground is how you summon a dog not how you request help from a supreme diety.
He immediately went on to the "well I'm sorry if I offended you" line of crap. I responded with I'm not offended, and if you think that's why I'm telling you this then you've entirely missed the point. If you think that you, as a human, can summon god like a common dog then you have reached the heighths of arrogance and you need to reexamine your heart.
There is so much more to the conversation ... it went on for 2 hours. Lots of it political with him hitting almost word for word right wing talking points and me countering him with facts from all of you (Thank you to all of you by the way). He couldn't come up with even one factoid or relevant piece of anything to back up any statement he made. The friend that was with him, bless her little fundy heart, turned out to be more liberal than he was by far and didn't back him up quite a few times which just left him stunned.
So hopefully he left a bit thoughtful. At least I can hope.

2. I'm sorry your brother is afflicted with this disease.
However he is afflicted. You have to live with that.
Part of the disease that is "conservativism" (and I use that word in quotes because they really aren't conservative) is their absolute refusal to compromise. How can you compromise if everything you say is good and everything a "Liberal" (again in quotes because "Liberal" is some kind of mythical creature they managed to collectively conjure up from the depths, which may explain your brother's ground pointing ritual) is evil.
The good news is, however, that these radical extremists, like your brother, have conservativism and the Republican party in a death grip. There aren't enough of these radicals to be a viable political force and since they cannot compromise they can only alienate those who can't buy the whole radical rightist schtick, hook line and sinker.
I think this explains much of McCain's schizophrenia. He couldn't win with just the radicals and he couldn't win without them, so he tried to straddle that gap. In fairness I think he was dreaming the impossible dream on that. But what did he have to lose, other than his good name and credibility?
I don't see a way out for them, but I'm trying too to find a way to relate to the radical right. I do not have any lofty goals, like a rapproachment. I just want to coexist and to be able to fend off their bullshit with minimal effort. I have been experimenting with taunts about their ideology being dead. That evokes a lot of anger and lashing out, of course, and it cuts to the bone because it's so true. That's kind of hard to accept when your whole cosmology comes crashing down on you, I guess.
But this man is still your brother so maybe taunting him isn't such a good idea? I might try taking that a step or two back and trying to engage his limited brain power in an effort to explain exactly how "conservatives" are going to reverse their political fortunes. He will try to evade this question with all kinds of irrelevance, but if you keep putting his nose in that he might break a little.
Good luck. Stay strong.

3. I've let him slide on his stuff for a long time
He's several years older than me. It sounds corny but it put a burden on me to stay silent and I wasn't willing to accept that burden anymore.
In at least my brothers case, and I do love my brother, I will no longer tolerate mindless BS. :whatever: He wants to talk to me he will do so intelligently. If he wants to state an opinion then he needs to be able to back up his opinion. If he crosses a line I will call him on it. If he's being a pompous ass I will call him that to his face rather than calling myself a lilly livered coward for NOT calling him one to his face later when I'm by myself.
If he cannot face his own beliefs then maybe he will think about and revise them some. No one has challenged him before because he surrounds himself only with those as mindless as himself and they can't help him defend defenseless positions so he still will have to think to be able to actually discuss. He doesn't get any more free passes.
What a donkey schlong! :loser:

I had lunch with my brother
Advertisements [?]and his "friend" this weekend.
They are both fundamentalist as far as you can go over to that bent type of Christians and in my view frequently Christian should be quotes based on what they do.
The lunch started pleasantly enough. Idle chit chat about this or that. How the family (extended) was doing and then the conversation turned first to politics.
We had a long talk and it degraded quite quickly. I had been prepare for the conversation for some months and left him stunned and thinking this time.
I left the meeting still thinking about it all and it occurred to me finally what the true problem with his brand of fundamentalism is. I came up with a new term for it. Revivalism.
The revivalist takes no responsibilty for the community. They swoop into an area, stay a few days, save a few souls, then abandon them to the environment to fend for themselves. They move on the tne next area and repeat.
This attitude is reflected in the religious rights politics throughout society. They are pro-birth, but abandon support at the moment the baby starts to cry. They are anti anything that doesn't fit within their own little closed community.
Revivalism is the ultimate in non involvement in the real lives of folks while making yourself feel good. I mean what can possibly be of more value than to save someone elses soul. It takes an hours effort and you're home in time for the game. Revivalism is the death of the real community church that cared about it's parishioners and the birth of the megachurch that's about business, politics and facade of soul saving. With 10,000 members the pastor probably doesn't even know who you are let alone that you just lost your job, or you are having problems with your kids. Revivalism is about making yourself feel good at virtually NO cost to yourself. It takes little time to go set up religious ferver to get folks to get "saved" it takes infinitely more time to set up programs to help those same people eat.
This is the true tragedy of the modern far right Christian movements. The betrayal of true teachings for the drug of the revival. Call it what you will, that's exactly what it is. I saw it growing up. All the modern christian hate groups are based on it in one form or another.
Just one of those things watching your family for decades makes you think about.

Bounce, bounce, bounce, THUD, break. Zero on the Bouncy scale and negative-400 bongs.

That bouncy ball made a "plop" sound when it hit.....you know....the same sound springtime cow shit makes when it hits the ground.....and bounced just about as high too.

He posted essentially the same shit at 1:00 and 1:18 on the same day?? My God, what a boring couple of stories! Not even any decent bounce. The time these people waste! I know I post kind of a lot, but they're 60-seconders at most.
Anyway, the first responder was a total shithead. She's looking to "break" people and cause anger and lashing out, even one's own family members. Nice. I hope she has zero friends, because she knows nothing about human beings.

My thought, too, sir--damn, we think alike on so many things.
I think it's a mole trying to get island cred.

Actually, during spring time it makes more of a spuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttttt, sound! Usually what happens in the spring is the new Grass is extremely high protein and not easy for a cow to digest, thus they really get the squirts! Actually probly a lot closer to this Bouncy, too!
I know, I know, more than you needed to know, but I go thru it every spring and thought I'd share! :-)

That spuuuuuuurrrrrrrttttttt sound is the methane escaping right after the initial big load dumping and plop sound. I to was raised on a farm and still get around cows occasionally in the springtime. .....but at least now a days I am wearing shoes.... :rotf:

3. Very valid observation.
This is where I think Christians have gone far afield of what we should be taught. Contrary to what I was taught as a child, my adult examination of scriptures indicates that we are not called to proselytize or evangelize. And, certainly not in the vein of the Crusades.
The so-called Great Commission given by Christ was fulfilled by Paul during the first century! He said the gospel had been preached to every creature. Done. Finished. Jesus said we are to care for the poor and live our lives in such a way as to reveal his love

It's always fun for the Vet too when that happens while they are shoulder deep in the cow wearing the funky plastic cow anus plastic arm protector. :-)

Yup. Such a massive amount of empty space is quite scary.

No, actually the inside of a primitive mind is more like a dark byzantine labyrinth with walls of slime and scum and dripping rancid water and ugly-looking grotesque reptiles springing out of nowhere to hiss and spit as one tries to walk through.
At least that's what's going on inside the mind of Doug's ex-wife.
I've been there. It defies the imagination.

Back when Doug's ex-wife was trying her Great Mischief in mid-2005, I had to go there.
All involved with Scamdy ordered me to go there; to comprehensively study her posts on Skins's island to figure out how her mind works.
And so I did.
I knew, and announced, Doug's ex-wife, who at the time superficially happily married, but a divorce was in the offing.....more than a year before it actually happened.
I don't want to "take one for the team" like that again.

Gosh if I didn't know better I'd think this moonbat was my brother-in-law. He visited us a couple months ago, just after Christmas. I love him and I especially adore my sister-in-law. We only see them once in a blue moon and they've not visited us since we moved. He just can't help sharing his opinion about everything, whether anyone asks for it or not. He truly believes (and reminds me every time we see each other) that I totally indoctrinated my son by homeschooling him and keeping him isolated, teaching him patriotism and religion and junk. If I'd sent him to public school like a normal person, he might learn a different set of values (never mind he went to a public college chalk full of liberal professors) so he'd know better than to join the Marines. I told him I hope my son has my values or else I haven't done my job.
Anyway, no one wants to argue with the guy but he's just rabid. When he really gets going he can toss spittle halfway across the room! We kept trying to tell him "hey, your guy won, you don't have to be so pissed off anymore". I even put in a Cheech and Chong movie hoping he would distract him and mellow him out. But the man practically worships the chip on his shoulder...you'd think it was an extra nut or something. I finally got enough margaritas down him (I kept putting an extra shot of tequila in his) until he passed out. Unfortunately that wasn't until about 3:30 in the morning. I mean, we didn't even say grace at dinner out of deference to him, for crap sakes. Still, it'll be nice to see them again in about another 10 years.
