A White House spokesman tells FOXNews.com President Obama opposes any move to bring back the so-called Fairness Doctrine.
President Obama opposes any move to bring back the so-called Fairness Doctrine, a spokesman told FOXNews.com Wednesday.
The statement is the first definitive stance the administration has taken since an aide told an industry publication last summer that Obama opposes the doctrine -- a long-abolished policy that would require broadcasters to provide opposing viewpoints on controversial issues.
"As the president stated during the campaign, he does not believe the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated," White House spokesman Ben LaBolt told FOXNews.com.
That was after both senior adviser David Axelrod and White House press secretary Robert Gibbs left open the door on whether Obama would support reinstating the doctrine.
"I'm going to leave that issue to Julius Genachowski, our new head of the FCC ... and the president to discuss. So I don't have an answer for you now," Axelrod told FOX News Sunday over the weekend when asked about the president's position.
The debate over the so-called Fairness Doctrine has heated up in recent days as prominent Democratic senators have called for the policies to be reinstated. Conservative talk show hosts, who see the doctrine as an attempt to impose liberal viewpoints on their shows, largely oppose any move to bring it back.

The DUmpmonkees ain't gonna like this. :rotf:

Hmmm....anything positive Obama does just makes me more suspicious. What's he up to? Asskissing for votes?
-
This scares me. I had never thought nhe would make a decision I support.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one. I just about don't care why he is doing it, as long as he is doing it. it seems like it wsn't an issue until the Clenis blamed his losing congress on rush limbaugh. it wasn't six months after that when you first began to hear rumblings about this thing being resurrected.
maybe obama will be in favor of reviving the fairness doctrine after he gets his ass kicked in the '10 midterms. :-)
-
My guess is that he needs all the cheerleaders he can get in the MSM to carry his water on his policies.
There will be a lot of economic reporting in the coming months and he doesn`t want anyone pressuring ABC,NBC,CBS to also broadcast stories that aren`t rosy about the long term impact of his pork bill.

He may be doing it so Rush and Hannity go easier on him. I know Marc Levin won't though. He's the antiObama.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's supporting NOT bringing it back..I just believe he has an ulterior motive.
-
I think he realizes this is a third-rail kind of thing, give the guy some credit for sound political instincts no matter what you think of his motives or ideology.
-
He's going to use localization and minority ownership rules to revive it and call it something else. It took far too long for him to issue this statement, I think he wants Congress to do his dirty work again.
I don't care what he says, he lies.
-

Obama is NOT making a decision you can agree with. He is disarming you, and setting himself above the fray.
Why, you might ask?
Because he has every intention of reinstating the fairness doctrine.
1) he may just call it by a different name.
2) he may allow his FCC people to reinstate it without a congressional vote.
3) he may create regional bodies of liberal O-Bots who will have power to regulate conservatives off the air.
4) He may put this deep inside the housing rescue bill. (how was I to know it was there?)
5) He may sign a congressional bill anyways and break this promise.
---------or---------
6) He just may do ALL of the above.
This is a liberal elitist speaking, he will not be held to his word by the media.
Certainly, not one of us should trust ANYTHING Obama's says. What he says and what he does are two very different things.
-
Uncle Zero wants more control of the media. With them supporting him the last thing he wants is for us to hear opposing viewpoints. No more globalwarming "science" shows without the alternative viewpoint? etc., etc., etc.......

The (un)Fairness Doctrine applies to radio ONLY. Television and newsprint are exempt.

My point exactly.

Ah, I guess he didn't want to have to shut down NPR then.

as it was then envisioned. don't think for a second that there weren't plans to apply it to TV, the internet, and other media. once freedom of speech has been violated, you are on a very slippery slope.
-
It will be called 'localism' and 'media diversity'. It will happen through the FCC and not Congress.

This is what I think it could be. I don't trust him a bit. He's done nothing but please his base since he's stepped foot into office. I just don't think he'll disappoint, with the "Fairness Doctrine".
-
^yeah that. H5 Mr. Mann.

He hasn't even pleased his base all that well.
-
maybe he's holding off because, as a Constitutional Law professor, he knows that even the most liberal Justice on the SCOTUS has said that abridging free speech only on the radio is a clear violation of the 1st Amendment.
-

The old one maybe. But I'm willing to bet that any new version (by whatever name) will attempt to apply it to tv, new print and certain internet publishing)

members of the Oministration have already talked about the internet when asked about the FD

The DUmmies must be upset I'd wager, after all, they were counting on this
being law toot sweet.
Can you imagine the DUmp if/when he decides we can't afford National Health Care??? :rotf:
-
The messiah doesn't support because he doesn't have to. All congress has to do is make a regulatory thingy in a bill and it's law..........he can say "I" don't support it, yet I feel sure he hopes his lackey's in Congres do

Hi,
Having taught the subject of Negotiations all over the world for better than 30 years I am very wary of this news. There is an age old negotiating technique called, "Make a deposit before you take a withdrawal".
Basically you give in on something that was not important to you, or you felt you had little chance of winning to cause your opponent to relax a minute and create the illusion of being fair.
I suspect there is just a matter of time before the other shoe drops and we damn sure better be prepared. In other words he earns no credit points for conceding the obvious. Americans were not going to take kindly to stifling free speech, who is he kidding??

You silly, silly naive people. "I support Obama on this". :whatever:
Here's what I posted at NCAABBS:
Obama doesn't support it, or so he says. He does, however, support the localization of stations. I.e. forcing local stations to only air local content. You know, can't have too many people getting to message out about what they're actually doing in Washington. Afterall, we peons should all be happy and content with getting the truth from NPR about Washington, who's ran by Democrats, who pay NPR's salaries.
-
why bring it up then?
-

I don't care what he says, he lies.
I'm inclined to agree - HOWEVER - at the same time - I can see him leaving thing unchanged so that he can use conservative talk radio as a scape goat for all his failures.

for all we know, it was in that 1,100 page stimulus bill that no one read.

Great point. The Fairness Doctrine is simply too controversial to ever be enacted. Obama does not want to be seen as an extreme left-wing loon. He wants to spend his political capital in other ways. I am not sure what those other ways are, burt watch his appointment to replace Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He/she is likely to be a nightmare.
-
Do the backroom, communist, democrats really want liberal loons on the air spouting their BS agenda to the public?

No, they don't. However they do want to silence the conservative point of view which resonates with listeners.
-
Do the backroom, communist, democrats really want liberal loons on the air spouting their BS agenda to the public?
Yes. Because the American Socialist Democrat believes that when their party or their ideas lose...it's because they didn't try hard enough...or go the left enough.
The Democrat Party believes that the ONLY reason that everyone in America doesn't share their vision of a shining Poliboro on the hill is because of Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. If they could only muzzle those two...Utopia would arrive.
-
I don't believe it. As much as Obama and the Dims have brought up Limbaugh's name the last month... I really don't believe it. Liberals already control major newspapers, all of the network and cable news media sans Fox, mags like Time and Newsweek, not to mention the majority of colleges and universities. They control 95% of the media and they want more.
And I hear the alien Congresshumanoid from Hollywood wants to apply the FD to the Internets? Any left wing kook can start their own blog or site to beat up on the Republican minority already. This is just nuts.

The University of Missouri "Mizzou" in Columbia, MO, is not terribly far from where I live. Mizzou happens to have one of the leading journalism schools in the nation and it's a hallmark of the entire university.
You ain't seen moonbat till you've seen the campus of Mizzou. Moonbatism runs amok here and it's appalling in its completeness.
Travel 5 miles outside Columbia (which isn't large) and it's a completely different political animal.
But if you think that moonbatism isn't being taught in journalism schools, you haven't seen this particular one.
It's downright scary.
That's why you wind up with so many left-wing zealots in the media. They are started on the Kool-Aid while in school and can't seem to shake the habit.

I believe that anyone who does not believe that the dems want to reenact the "fairness" doctrine - I believe that you lot are deceiving yourselves with wishful thinking - kinda like the same wishful thinking that got a lot of you to vote for Barry in the first place. Damn fools.

I highly doubt that anyone that posts here voted for Barry.
-
Hmmm....anything positive Obama does just makes me more suspicious. What's he up to? Asskissing for votes?
No. He is either smart and knows what it would do to their side as well as ours or he is a sneaky little rat that will let nasty pelosi and the others do the work and take the blame for getting it passed. There is so much room under the Big ears bus.
-
I highly doubt that anyone that posts here voted for Barry.
You'd be surprised how many people voted for him who should have known better!

We have a MODERATOR here who did.

Yes! Mizzou is a PERFET example. I am in North KC, moved from southern california. It seems that those college town mentalities basically bled through even a more conservative orange county because there was no real change from city to city. Encountering Columbia is a perfect example of how within the collegiate community the liberalism is rampant and yet only minutes out of town in "real life" there is a more realistic view on politics etc.
-
I agree with the consensus. It isn't going to be the fairness doctrine. He can't support that in it's definition, etc. BUT...he will take ideals from it and either appoint boards to regulate local or regional media outlets or do something that will get around any sort of image of the fairness doctrine. That will be the "technicality" in which he will be able to control certain arenas he is hell bent on controlling.
