CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez won a referendum to eliminate term limits Sunday, paving the way for him to run again in 2012 — and beyond — and push through his vision of a socialist Venezuela.
Fireworks exploded in the sky and caravans of supporters celebrated in the streets, waving red flags and honking horns.
With 94 percent of the vote counted, 54 percent had voted in favor of the constitutional amendment, National Electoral Council chief Tibisay Lucena announced. Forty-six percent had voted against the measure to eliminate term limits on all public officials, too few to make up the distance with the remaining

They need to seriously get some people in there to investigate that. This just reeks of fraud. He held the earlier election to get the idea of how much he needed to grease the wheels, and this time pushed it enough.

46% voted against the amendment. Next time there will be 100% vote for Chavez because 46% of the population will come down with some strange disease and be dead.

This highlights the fundamental flaw in the whole idea of spreading the light of democracy to the world. In places where it has shallow roots, there is greater loyalty to a leader than to safeguarding the process and institutions of government, and people will all too often happily (and stupidly) let themselves be bribed into voting themselves right into enslavement to a dictator's whim.

I'm not God, and so am not saying this is what's going to happen, but--
Latin American dictators have a long long long history of waxing and waning in popular support, but then at what seems the moment of their greatest triumph and permanent establishment, something happens.
If I were concerned for Yugo, which I'm not, I'd advise him to watch his back.
