Title: D'oh! Caterpillar CEO Contradicts President on Rehiring Laid-Off Employees
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on February 12, 2009, 06:34:23 PM
I suppose if you're facing an overt communist powergrab it's best to have it attempted by a fairly incompetent commie who keeps tripping over his own BS.

Quote
EAST PEORIA, ILL. -- President Obama today repeated the claim we asked about yesterday at the press briefing that Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc., "said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off."

Caterpillar announced 22,000 layoffs last month.

But after the president left the event, Owens said the exact opposite.

Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, "I think realistically no. The truth is we're going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again"

"It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill" means re-hiring, he said.

Nothing like being pulled out on national TV to be called a liar pushing a plan with no beneficial effect for years to come. I suppose it's only fair that the president that has no compunction throwing people under the bus would find himself thrown under an earth-mover. Couple this with the Judd Gregg announcement and Barry is having a bad day.

The Magic Negro is going to wake up and realize that there is a huge difference between campaigning and running the Federal Government. So far, this rookie is falling flat on his face. I can not wait for dumb @ss Geithner to tell Congress and investors how he plans to dole out the TARP money. Between Obama and Geithner they could not efficiently run a whore house. Corporations like CAT have little confidence in these two birds who espouse doom and gloom on a daily basis.

Yeah, he was in town today, and the whole city was going nuts. Idiots. But yeah, if they think Obama is going to save their jobs, well... he COULD, by cutting taxes and regulations, but we all know that ain't gonna happen.

I'm not surprised that he got it wrong.  a large part of his press conference came off like he was attempting to conduct an economics 101 lecture, complete with utter contempt for the unedumicated masses.  the only problem was that everything that he said was demonstrably wrong, from the    causes of the "lost decade" in japan, to the odd suggestion that it was a universal truth that every program in the new deal was instantly 100% successful.

he probably just assumed that all of the layoffs would be magically reversed after he puffed his magic stimulus, in you and me.  this guy used used to being the smartest guy in the room, obviously, but I am beginning to wonder if he just hasn't gotten out very often.

CATERPILLAR is getting out of the over the road truck engine business. ....that's quite a few workers right there. Out in California, construction companies and farmers are having to re-engine thier older heavy equipment to meet the new polution  standards...and that ain't cheap....so there's a few jobs lost right there, money spent not on new equipment but upgrades to older stuff. ....and not much after meeting the Tier III engine requirements they're going to have to do it all over again to meet the next level of emmission standards.

They couldn't just require new equipment to meet those standards, they had to require 'ALL' equipment must meet it.

Ya'll know the bit.....action - reaction.

CAT has had alot of issues for the past 15 or so years....quality started to go down, just about the time they locked out a few thousand workers, and then started to hire at $7.50 an hour.

The DUmmies just can't comprend what the EPA requirements on emmission controls have done to the used equipment market and how that's effecting the sell of new equipment.

This CAT equipment ain't like cheap cars that you throw away every 4 or 5 years. It's million dollar+ pieces of equipment that due to EPA rules have no trade-in or re-sell value with the engines now in them. It cost 30K to well over a 100K in some cases to re-engine these pieces to meet current standards. Standards that are going to change again in 2012......so maybe, just maybe they'll buy new stuff in 2012 "IF" it looks like they can run those pieces until they are used up (many many years).

One interesting thing, they are owned by Mitsubishi.
The whole engine thing, from my understanding, is the exaust system gets replaced with a catalytic converter and a computerized fuel management system. This is something we are dealing with right now.
It should be noted that the local Cat rep is MORE than happy to retrofit the lifts we have, at $4500 per lift. :bird:
Any lifts older than 1990 aren't "certifiable" and have to be sold, or scrapped, all in the name of Glowballs Warming. (Co2 reduction). Nice, huh?

Geezus, any doofus like me, who knows a slight amount about the details of this bill can see at one glance it's not going to get heavy machinery employment up and running for I don't know how long.  Years, if any.   What is going on in that peabrain of O's?
Oh, yeah, and it drives me crazy how he thinks the New Deal was swell, an irrefutable success, and he ridicules those who have done thorough research into proving the opposite.  What does this man read?  People Magazine?

In Bettendorf, IA there is now a Casino where there used to be a CAT plant. The old parts depot is now a covered parking garage.

It all for the children, don't ya know.

Emission standards reached the point of diminishing returns a long time ago.  It's to the point that it cost thousands of dollars for a .00001% reduction in (whatever the hell it is) "emissions" they are targeting on any specific day.

Somebody tell me again why it's a good idea to have the government running things.  I keep forgetting....

During debate of the stimulus package Congressman Aaron Schock says no Caterpillar employees asked him to support the stimulus plan even though President Obama encouraged them to do so.
