Swarm of Tornadoes Kills 21 Across South
ATKINS, Ark. — Tornadoes across four Southern states tore through homes, ripped the roof off a shopping mall and blew apart warehouses in a rare spasm of violent winter weather that killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more.
The twisters that slammed Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky were part of a line of storms that raged across the nation's midsection at the end of a day of Super Tuesday primaries in several states. Candidates including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee even paused their victory speeches to remember the victims.
The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says four more people have died in a tornado outbreak, raising the state's death toll to seven.
A spectacular fire erupted at a natural gas pumping station northeast of Nashville that authorities could have been damaged by the storms, and an undetermined number of people were reported dead.
A couple and their 11-year-old daughter were killed in their home after a tornado touched down near the center of Atkins, a community of 3,000 along the Arkansas River in the central part of the state.
"This was an extraordinary night," said Gov. Mike Beebe. "When it's compounded by darkness, that makes it that much more difficult."

Tornadoes in Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky kill at least 23 people and injure more than 100, authorities say.
(CNN) -- Tornadoes that roared through parts of Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee killed at least 16 people and injured nearly 100 more Tuesday night, authorities said.
The storm prompted the early closures of polling places, damaged a university, a shopping mall, a retirement home and a hospital, and caused damage that may not be fully apparent until daybreak.
It trapped people in damaged buildings and ignited a fire that sent flames shooting hundreds of feet into the night sky.
"Rescue crews are going to go all night long," said Matt DeCample, a spokesman for the Arkansas governor. "Until daylight comes, we're really not going to know the scope of things."
The storm killed seven people in four counties in Arkansas, he said.
In Atkins, Arkansas, three people were killed, including a man, woman and child in the same family, Pope County Judge Jim Ed Gibson told CNN.
Five others were transferred to local hospitals.
Gibson said there was widespread damage across the county, and that trucks and vehicles were overturned by the storm along Interstate 40. The interstate was briefly closed, he said, but had since reopened.
About 30 National Guardsmen will help with the recovery effort in Atkins on Friday morning, DeCample said.
The other fatalities in Arkansas were in Conway County, where two were killed, and in Clinton and Gassville, both of which had one death.
In Tennessee, the tornado trapped college students and retirees in collapsed building and retirement-home communities, said Julie Oaks, a spokeswoman for the state's Emergency Management Agency.
In Memphis, a tornado swept through the southeastern section of the city, killing three people and injuring a dozen others, according to emergency management officials. All three died when part of a warehouse collapsed on them. At least eight others were injured across the county.
Also hit in the storm was the Hickory Ridge Mall, said Shelby County, Tennessee, Emergency Preparedness Director Bob Nations Jr.
There were no significant injuries, he said, but added, "The mall infrastructure is heavily damaged."
One person was killed in Madison County, Oaks said. Two others died in Hardin County, according to the local emergency management agency.
At least 50 people were trapped after the storm caused damage to the Jackson Oaks Retirement Home, Oaks said. Nine students were trapped in a damaged dormitory at Union University in Jackson, she said.

That's horrible. If it hits 76, hopefully not, it will be the worst tornado outbreak since United States-Canadian Outbreak on May 31, 1985. :bawl:

More than 200 still unaccounted for in Macon County
As many as 230 people remain unaccounted for in Macon County, in the wake of Tuesday’s killer storms.
Local law enforcement has received 230 reports of residents who have not checked in with anyone since tornadoes ripped through the county, but officials do not believe all 230 qualify as missing persons. Some could be duplicate reports.
"We’re going to cover every house in the county, if it takes a week,†Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons.

The blame should not be on Global warming, but unpreparedness. I mean, who expects tornadoes in February? It is certainly not good. A lot of these folks didn't know it was coming, and that's how you get a high tally like this unfortunately. I certainly hope though that the death toll stops there... it's so catastrophic it's head spinning.

Instead of flapipng his gums and creating more hot air, maybe Senator Kerry would like to contribute to some local organizations for people in need.
Nope, didn't think so.
