Take a look at President Barack Obama approaching Marine One for his maiden flight on the helicopter, which he later described as a "spiffy ride" . The marine standing beside the door is at attention and smartly saluting his commander-in-chief . Mr Obama returns the salute - crisply - but then decides to shake the startled marine's hand.
I'm ex-Navy and did a fair bit of saluting and being saluted during my time and this struck me as plain wrong in terms of protocol. Over at Knowledge is Power, Colonel Jerry USMC (Ret) agrees: "Officers know that when approaching an enlisted Marine who is at attention, not to engage him in conversation or shake his hand without first saying, 'Stand at ease.'"
In the comments below the video, skipjak06 says: "You never saw a president handshaking his military guards in the past because it's not military protocol. That's because a Commander in Chief, returning the salute, or acknowledging it by a head nod, in itself is the proper and appropriate recognition of the Marine rendering that salute. The handshake was an amateur hour gesture. Did you see the look on that marine';s face? like, WTF???"

Gotta agree. I'm guilty of the same thing. We've got an airmen who always comes to attention whenever an NCO comes buy, I never tell him to stand at ease, I just wave him off.

The OP was right, amateur hour for sure but it was just ignorance. No disrespect intended. Just the opposite me thinks.

"spiffy ride" . . . "all ginned up" (in the debate last night) . . . odd speech mannerisms that are getting more and more obvious as time goes by. and he no longer reads 99% of everything he says off a teleprompter.

The news was making a big deal out of it yesterday or Sunday....as in "isn't Obama wonderful for acknowledging the Marines with a handshake and none of the previous presidents had ever bothered to acknowledge the Marines".....so based on the word of the news media.....the past presidents were too stuck up to acknowledge and Obama is just one of the guys.....

If this is the crap we are going to focus on for the next 4 years then we are officialy the new Moonbats. Seriously people it was a handshake. The Marines will be guarding this man and his family day and night at Camp David.
You girls would be bitching if he DIDN'T shake his hand.
Can we focus on the fact that Chairman barack is hell bent on destroying the United States of America as we know it????????
Maybe the Creation of The Union of American Socialist States will make us forget that he bumped his head?????

Protocol or no protocol, I have to give Obama props on this one. It was a nice gesture; unlike Bill Clinton who despised the military along with that hag he married. Bubba was too stupid to salute the first soldier that saluted him. That was a boner ten thousand times worse than this.
