Title: E-Bay or on the Rocks?
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on February 08, 2009, 02:25:37 PM
I have come into possession of a bottle of twenty-one y/o Chivas Royal Salute scotch whiskey...at least it was 21 y/o when it was bottled. It was bottled so long ago it still has a tax stamp. I cannot find a bottling date though so I don't know exactly how old it is. It's an opaque blue bottle.

Is it worth selling or should I just drink it?

It looks like you could get about $130 or so for it.  Are you feeling extravagant? :)

In this recession, you should sell it for the cash. Then again, drinking it might make you feel better about the current financial crisis too.

You are in quite the pickle, Mr Snuggle Bunny.

The sales prices for the 750ml bottle is between $125-$200 and up.

I'd sell it. :-)

Yeah, I'm seeing an average $150...for recently retailed bottles...this bottle is obviously much older due to the presence of the red tax stamp over the top.

Does anybody know when those were discontinued?

Quote
Starting sometime in 1945, the Federal Tax Seal Strips contained the word "SERIES" just to the left, and "111" just to the right of the Eagle's feet.  Effective September 1, 1977 the "LESS THAN 1/2 PINT" phrase was removed from the ends of the Federal Tax seal strips when the government went to the metric system of measure. The words "BUREAU OF AFT" appears on the top left and top right of the seal strip. Also the words "TAX PAID" were added to the bottom left and "DISTILLED SPIRITS" was added to the bottom right of the Federal Tax Seal strip.

In late 1979, USA distillers moved from ounces and 1/10 pints to 50 ML as the standard unit of measure.

In 1982, the Federal Tax Seal Strip was again modified when the word "DISTILLED" replaced "TAX PAID" on the bottom left, & the Word "SPIRITS" replaced "DISTILLED SPIRITS" on the bottom right side of the Seal Strip.

Post a picture of it.  I'd like to see it.

I love it! Selling it sounds like a good idea.

I'd drink it! Looks too good to sell for a couple lousy bucks!

The bottle looks like something Mr Scott on Star Trek would keep for "Special Occasions"

That looks just like a bottle I bought back in 1979. It doesn't appear that they have changed bottles. If you need the cash, sell it on EBay...... if you don't, I think you'll enjoy every last drop.
