Census Director to Work Directly with White House

President Obama has decided to have the director of the U.S. Census Bureau work directly with the White House, the administration said today, a move that comes as the Census Bureau prepares to conduct the 2010 census that will determine redistricting of congressional seats.
Under the Bush administration, the Census Bureau director reported to the commerce secretary. Obama is adding oversight of the director by senior White House aides, but keeping the bureau itself under the umbrella of the Department of Commerce, White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said.
After Obama nominated a Republican, New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg, to head Commerce, Latino advocates voiced concern about him overseeing the politically delicate task of determining the nation's population. But LaBolt suggested Obama's changes to the organizational structure have been long in the making

So let me get this straight. We get insulted with the attempt of trying to take away the philibuster by the appointment And then instead of actually letting the man DO his job then he will be twisted into the socialist change that is the agenda of that crook Emanual and his puppet Obama.
This just keeps getting worse and worse.
You know the scary thing is things like this and the schip are the kinds of things that will be slipped in and done without too much notice by the MSM because they will be focused on the more sensational things like his nonstimulus bill and the charges being dropped on that animal that spearheaded the Cole bombing.

I read about the issue over at Newsbusters but I'm already raving like a madman about the "stimucrack" and don't wish to sound too much like a raving moonbat in one night. Your right though. This is a bigger story than it will ever get credit for in the MSM.

On January 25, as noted by yours truly here at NewsBusters ("Obama 'Shifting Power From Traditional Cabinet Posts"), Jonathan Martin at Politico.com reported that President Obama "is moving to create perhaps the most powerful staff in modern history – a sort of West Wing on steroids that places no less than a half-dozen of his top initiatives into the hands of advisers outside the Cabinet." (The picture on the right is at that report.)
I'm not aware that any Old Media outlet besides Politico itself, which is largely a collection of Old Media alums, has covered this development.
The power grab continues. My bet is that Old Media will also maintain its studied ignorance of this development, despite years of whining about alleged Executive Branch excesses during the Bush administration.

At this point it does. There is no need for the census director to work with anyone, if people are being counted accurately. The only reason for the Administration to dabble in this political minutiae is to insure there is National Gerrymandering accomplished.

Is a White House take over of the census constitutional?
As I read it, the Director of the Census must, by law, be within the Department of Commerce and under the direction of the (Senate approved) Secretary of Commerce who then reports to the president. Am I missing something?
The Secretary of Commerce is the only authority the law recognizes. Since as commenter Laird points out, the Constitution did not place the census function in Article II - the Executive branch but in Article I - the Legislative branch, it is not at all within the President's reach unless the legislature places it there.
The Secretary of Commerce does not even report his findings to the President, but rather is instructed to 'publish' them. It looks quite clear to me that any incursion by the White House after those two Senate approved appointments is clearly against the law.
Oh my.
