WASHINGTON (AP) - Amid stunning new job losses and yet another bank failure, key senators and the White House reached tentative agreement Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's recovery plan. Two officials said the emerging agreement was for a bill with a $780 billion price tag, but there was no immediate confirmation.
The tentative agreement capped a tense day of back room negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, joined by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.
Officials strongly suggested that Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's vote would be needed to assure passage. The Massachusetts Democrat, battling a brain tumor, has been in Florida in recent days and has not been in the Capitol since suffering a seizure on Inauguration Day more than two weeks ago. The senator's office did not comment.
Reid met privately in the Capitol with members of his rank-and-file to present the proposed deal.
At $780 billion, the legislation would be smaller than the measure that cleared the House on a party-line vote last week. It also would mean a sharp cut from the bill that has been the subject of Senate debate for a week. That measure stood at $937 billion.
Beyond the numbers, though, any agreement would mark a victory for the new president and would keep Democratic leaders on track to fulfill their promise of delivering him a bill to sign by the end of next week

As I heard Sean Hannity say on his radio show today, he will do all that he can to defeat ANY Republican senator who sides with the Democrats on this pork giveaway, as it's currently constructed.
I'm with him.
While two Republicans does not bipartisanship make, it gives the Dems and Obama a victory on something that will damage America greatly.
But, now, are those Repubs really Repubs? Not. RINOs at very best.

The good folks at PowerLine are reporting that 3 maybe 4 so called Republicans turned on us. (no names yet) But they do note the tiny sliver of good that might come out of this...
The important thing, I think, is that Barack Obama and the Democrats own this bill, and they will own the consequences that almost certainly will result: delayed recovery (although this will be impossible to prove), unprecedented deficits, tax increases and inflation. Republicans, meanwhile, continue to come up with better alternatives, most recently John Thune's proposal to scrub the entire pork bill and:
...replace it with a $936 billion across-the-board-middle-class tax rebate for 182 million Americans. The amendment would result in a tax rebate of $5,143 for single filers and $10,286 for married couples who file jointly.
That's obviously a better idea, but it wouldn't increase the power of government, so the Democrats aren't interested.

When this bill doesn't work to stimulate the economy and America goes further down the toilet, we will in a bit less than 2 years. It's the Dems' bill and it will be the Dems' mess. They will try to deny it (like they tried to deny the current economic crisis is their fault, too), but we must not let them! They MUST pay dearly at the polling booths in 2010. It's nice to know that Obama is sealing his fate as a one-term president right out of the gate, though.

He did say bill would pass Senate.
Maybe this can still be construed as essentially a Democrat bill.

Senators have reached a tentative deal on a version of President Obama's economic stimulus plan, including about $805 billion in spending and tax cuts, that will win enough Republican votes to move forward.
Sens. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Susan Collins of Maine appeared to be the critical Republicans to sign onto the bill, giving Democrats the 60 votes needed to advance to a final vote. Democrats also voiced confidence that Republican Sen. Olympia Snow of Maine also would vote for the plan.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he doubts a vote will take place Friday night, suggesting the Senate will act sometime next week. As Majority Leader Harry Reid reconvened the session on the Senate floor Friday night, Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., told FOX News it's looking like action will come Sunday.
As part of the deal, spending in the bill was reduced while tax cuts were increased, for a mix of 58 percent spending and 42 percent tax cuts. A senior Democratic leadership aide said the White House was on board.

Why do I vote Republican again? For the life of me I can't remember. They spent and spent and spent us into the ground for years and didn't take on fannie and freddie when they did have power (before 2006) I'd say I'm a 3rd party man from here on out but I'd be thrilled to my toes if we at least had two ****ing parties to choose from.

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), issued the following statement tonight after the announcement of a compromise on the Senate stimulus bill.
"While I appreciate the efforts of my colleagues to bring down the price tag of this bill, the fact is we still face a trillion dollar spending bill. Making it worse, the bill is 93% spending and only 7% stimulation. Over the past few days I have fought to include more in the way of real stimulus through higher percentage of infrastructure and defense spending, while working to cut much of the typical government waste often found in a bill of this size. Yet Democrats have blocked these efforts.
"The good news tonight is that the American people are catching on to the fact that this largest spending bill in history and are becoming more and more vocal in their opposition. My offices in Oklahoma and Washington DC have been flooded with emails, phone calls and faxes overwhelmingly opposed to this trillion dollar legislation. They can rest assured that my vote remains an unwavering ‘no.'"
Did Inhofe stand up to Bush's overspending too or is this just damage control for Republicans? My spotty memory seems to be telling me he is one of the good guys. (Maybe I should move back to Oklahoma, lol)

Hannity is relentless. He is going to truly get the voters riled up and this will not be forgotten during the next election. The ones who officially vote for this package need to be considering new careers now. Maybe Al Gore can help them see the light and jump on the global warming campaign.

If this is enacted, I can only hope that on their deathbed, everyone involved in the passage will be told by their children/grandchildren that they won't be able to attend a funeral and don't want the inheritance because of the taxes they have to pay... if only grandpa hadn't voted yes back in '09...

I don't know about that. People's memories are very short. They'll be on to something else in two years.
The real problem from all this will be inflation and mushrooming national debt. The inflation impact may be five or six years from now; the impact of the debt won't be felt for ten years or more. Voters will blame whoever is in office at that time, not now.

After Obama's miraculous 2008 presidential campaign, it was clear that at some point the magical mystery tour would have to end. The nation would rub its eyes and begin to emerge from its reverie. The hallucinatory Obama would give way to the mere mortal. The great ethical transformations promised would be seen as a fairy tale that all presidents tell -- and that this president told better than anyone.

$780B that will, according to The PresidentStar!, create 3 million jobs . . . that comes to over $250K per job, which, ironically, qualifies as a rich person that he said time and time again on the campaign trail that he was going to jack their taxes up. coincidence? I think not. :-)

Now Barack Hussein Obama is trying to sell the sham around the country. I have heard he will be on tv tonight, maybe I will stay away from it. I did think it was kind of funny how Krauthammer set all the communists off with just one short column.
