DECATUR - For the past six years, employment at the Caterpillar Inc. plant in Decatur has been on the rise.
Now, with the global economy in the midst of a major recession, the Peoria-based manufacturer is dramatically reversing course. The latest in a series of cutbacks was announced Friday, with plans to permanently lay off 1,026 production workers and 146 support and management staff in Decatur.
The layoffs are scheduled to begin April 13, the company said. It is required by federal law to provide 60 days' notice of a mass layoff.
"We've enjoyed the upswing of Caterpillar and their business growth," said Craig Coil, president of the Economic Development Corporation of Decatur and Macon County. "It's really impacted the community in a positive way in almost every sector. Now, we're caught in the circumstance of having to ride the down wave as well. It's a major blow to us as a community, and it's a major blow to the progress we've made over the last six years."
My local paper. (http://www.herald-review.com/articles/2009/01/31/news/local/1038846.txt)
This is going to be a big blow to the city and county. The city is pop. @81,500, and the county is pop. @115,000. That means Cat is contributing to an almost 1% jump in the unemployment in the county and slightly more in the city. The city was already above the national average.

I feel sorry for the people who get laid off, and hope they find good jobs, but then again, they most likely voted for 0bama. decisions have consequences

There's only three big companies here. ADM and Tate & Lyle are the other 2. If either one of them had a big lay-off, it would doom this place. Fortunately, so far, both of them are grain processors, and have yet to have a large lay-off.

Come on now, that's rather callous. :(

Why do you think that?

Union.
But one has nothing to do with the other.

I was wondering if that is what doc was inferring. I agree that one has nothing to do with the other.

I agree that my comment was rather callous, but I did express my condolences on the loss of jobs. However, upon checking the vote tally for Macon County, 0bama won there by 500 votes or so.... When you knowingly vote for a candidate who says he will raise taxes, especially on the "rich" and "big businesses" when the economy is entering a recession, you deserve to feel some pain. We've seen the comment on here before: "Stupidity should be painful."

Unemployment hit 13.9% in my county in December.

Shouldn't the same logic or punishment apply to you also? Seeing as how your fellow countrymen overwhelmingly voted for Obama.

I'm in the military... I'll feel the stupid before long, don't worry

Cat is one of the biggest employers of my city (pop 112,963) and 1300 people in the area are due to be laid off (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28940506/). That and they are planning on spending more on a hospital upgrade, building some sort of city museum, and other various projects that don't really need done... we're f**ked with a capital F.
