Title: Icy Tuesday 1/27
Post by: Chris_ on January 27, 2009, 06:27:52 AM
Lots of rain here, but ice to the north.  Was watching the local news, but the ABC station just went off the air.  The weather tomorrow is predicted to be worse here....with heavy snow following all this rain, freezing rain and sleet.  Yeah, it's gonna be fun.

We have about a 1/2" of solid ice layer here with 2" of sleet over that.

It's a mess here...I can see one of the more 'major, minor' arteries out of my office window and it's been at a stop or crawl for the last hour. Wrecks everywhere. The other half will likely work from home tomorrow given the state of the roads and the fact we expect another 4 or 5 inches of snow overnight..ahhh...winter :thatsright:

Kids are on a delay and the girl child is sick so she's on an all day delay. Got a really bad cold...I mean the kind that lays you up for a day or two. So, my mother won't travel in this so I'll get the boy child off to school, pack up the littlest to go to the gym(the instructor has to start late since the delay affects her :-)) ==mum can watch the sickie while I work out. Figure might be my last workout until tomorrow night at this rate so going to get it while the getting is good.

I'm getting a little twinge in the back, left throat...feels like it's in my ear now :thatsright: Otherwise, I feel just fine...go figure.

I really really really can't wait for this winter to be over.

Ah, ice storms.  Good thing it's too cold here for those now!

6 degrees here as I speak, heading for a high of 25.  Finished up one diesel outage yesterday, bosses gave shop the day off before we go back to the other diesel (more 12-hour days) tomorrow.

I'm thinking I'll do some early packing/cleaning so I don't have to on Saturday night.

A foot of new global warming starting tonight.  Yay!

16 degrees here this morning and the snow from Sunday will be around for at least 5 more days, with no above freezing temps predicted before Sunday.

No ice here, but there is snow...no school.  My daughter is being a crab because they adjusted the dance schedule since there is no school.  Instead of 5-9 with the choreographer, she has to be there from 11-6.

No Wii to play, so my boys are fighting over the TV.

And I have cramps from hell.

Yep, it's gonna be a great day!

It cooled off here a little bit, at 6 12 AM it's 39 and will only get up to 52. I hate these cold days.  :-)

Well so much for the am workout :thatsright: Been a helluva a morning already....guess I'll spend my day after the grocery store and once the only kid going to school gets outta here cleaning like a mad woman to burn some energy...argh...winter sucks the big one!

Ok, I've decided to make some lemonade. I've never had snowgeer for myself...I'm getting some today and taking the youngest out to help shovel and play in it. i'm tired of being in the house or in the gym or just in somewhere alternating between looking forlorn at the outside wishing I could get out and cursing the outside when I'm in it for being so damn cold.

rant complete :-)

I'll trade ya, jty.

Just called the oil company so they could top off the tank before I leave for the flatlands of Iowa.  They're coming Thursday--AFTER the storm blows through, so I'll have to dig out AGAIN for them to be able to get to the tank fill.

This is what I'm looking at for tomorrow:

Quote
Issued by The National Weather Service
Portland, ME
9 am EST, Tue., Jan. 27, 2009

... WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM WEDNESDAY TO 3 AM EST THURSDAY...

A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM WEDNESDAY TO 3 AM EST THURSDAY.

TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS IN THE WARNING AREA WILL RANGE FROM 10 TO 15 INCHES

The last time we got nailed, we were told 4-6 inches.  We got 15.    :censored:

Raining, raining, raining here.....it's supposed to be clearing off somewhat, at least the rain is to stop for a while....then it's to pick up this eveneing and tomorrow and the temps are to drop. They are stumbling around on whether it will turn to ice or snow.

Need to get out this afternoon and go take some pics, get some papers signed and put signs out.

I need a wet suit and flippers...... :uhsure:

I have to say, I do have empathy for all of you home with sick kids or snowed in kids. I remember those days, and I honestly don't miss them at all. But there will come a day, that they will be grown and out of the house.....and you will have days that you would give anything to have them little again and at home.....knowing they are eating right, getting enough sleep....and most importantly .....safe.

So far, us folks here in North Central Texas (My area of it), seem to have avoided the ice. I looked outside this morning and no ice on anything, YET. It doesn't bode well, though. I'm glad I'm NOT in Oklahoma!!

At the moment, I'm following up on a job application that will require me to move further South and a lead to another job here in the local area.

I had class this morning.  I got a nice text message during class "Starting 10am all classes canceled."

It's supposed to get icy in a couple of hours I think, but well I have to work until 6 anyways.  I have my drive home from work situtated that only takes me over 1 bridge.

Last night I was very domesticated.  I made a pot of black-eyed peas and cornbread.  I also made blueberry muffins for my breakfast this week too.  :)

Savannah is getting back to its usual weather, which means more hell for my sinuses. :(

Class was a bit stressful today (Physics, so I shouldn't have to describe what exactly happened. Y'all can figure it out.  :lmao: ).

Lunch for today is nachos (and probably my dinner too. It's a HUGE pile of deliciousness...minus the jalapenos (none available *sighs* ).

It's pretty calm here at the moment but looking at this, I'm guessing we are about to get some ugly weather..

29° here in Texomaland. Ice is starting to cling to the trees and any other above ground surface. I cancelled our Tuesday Night Bingo at the VFW because I expect it to start freezing on the bridges & overpasses rather soon. The roads are slickery at some intersections, already.

I have another hour left before I can leave work.  The weather is starting to ice up outside.  I have my back up route home.

I've been busy researching Texas Mechanic's Liens today.  We're putting liens on two vehicles that are here right now.  Tomorrow I have to call TADA and get a couple little questions answered and then I can start filing all the paper work.

Am I a victim of the times, old age or cheapness?

I went out this afternoon and bought an entertainment center for the TV we got at Christmas.

It's a credenza style one with some glass doors and two drawers for crap/movies/games.  It's nice and all, made of hardwood, but It was all I could do to force myself to pay for the thing.

It was $450 bucks and that was after an 18% discount.

I don't remember furniture costing this much. We replaced the dining room chairs recently and I about crapped when I saw what we payed for six of those.  I guess it may be culture shock coming from the Monkey Ward furniture background that I do.

Cripes I still used milk crates for book shelves when we got married, lol.

Wow.  For that kind of money, you could have bought a table saw and enough lumber and fasteners to make one -- and you'd still have the saw.

Furniture prices are ridiculous.

We've gotten about 3 more inches of sleet here. It is starting to end, though. Electrical outages are minimal, but, there have been over 1,000 wrecks responded to by emergency personnel, according to the OHP, in the OKC metro.

I'm having waffles for dinner.  I found an interesting recipe I've been eager to try... it turned out pretty tasty.  It's your basic waffle recipe with a little different preparation.  They came out very light and crispy and not heavy at all.  I picked up some fancy maple syrup in a glass bottle -- good stuff.

Quote
1 and 3/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 beaten egg yolks
1 and 3/4 cups milk
1/2 cup vegtable oil
3 egg whites - beaten stiffly

Mix all dry ingredients. Combine yolks and milk. Stir into dry ingredients. Stir in oil and mix. GENTLY fold in beaten egg whites, do not over mix.

I think I'll try those.....they look good.

I found this syrup that is Roasted Pecan and it's delicious, with pecans in the syrup. Found it originally at Tuesday Morning, but have since seen it at Ross's, Marshall's and Big Lots. Also comes in Blueberry, Raspberry, Toasted Walnut, and some other flavors. The blueberry is also wonderful, haven't tried the others.

We have a restaurant that we have hung out at for years, and they have chocolate waffle dessert. Bet the recipe that Chris used would work....maybe add a tsp of vanilla, a couple tsp. of Hershey cocoa, maybe a bit extra sugar.

Make the waffle, then put vanilla and chocolate ice cream on it, hot fudge syrup, whipped cream and pecans.

It's a dessert to share.

I was out of granulated sugar, so I used confectioners sugar instead.  It was very sugary.

Shouldn't have made that much difference. There wasn't that much in the batter to begin with....
Was the syrup more sugary than what you are used to, because it was maple syrup rather than a corn syrup base?

What else would you use to get the wrinkles out of a waffle?

*groan* :-)

I felt silly buying it, but it was less than $20 and I like my waffles.  It's a cheap Chinese piece of shit (what other kind are there?) but it works.  The hinge has already fallen apart on it, though.

LOL! at Lug.

Chris - go to the thrift store and get you an old school boat anchor style metal waffle iron from the 70's. That's what I did and it works like a charm. I found one that's old but in great condition. Clearly the person who owned rarely if ever used it so it wasn't nasty.

Don't feel silly....at least you have pots and pans..

My son didn't have pots and pans....yet he decided on night he wanted waffles. He went to Walmart to get a waffle iron at like 2am! He did buy some pots and pans while he was there, he said. I figure he had a girl with him, that made him buy some.  :thatsright:

I love my waffle iron .... I'm going to have to try that recipe Chris.  The toasted walnut sounds good too Deb.  Shoot, now I'm hungry.  Hey, toss chocolate chips into the batter .... nummy nummy nummy  and you can spoon in some malted milk mix too.  sigh
