Anyone know anything about Duke Tip talent search? It is sponsored by Duke University. My daughter (the one who will be 10 in a few days) was selected supposedly from a "select group of students" that qualified to participate in the program. On the letter about it it said that my daughter was in the 99th percentile on the TAKS Reading & Math. I knew she scored well but I guess I didn't realize she scored in the 99th percentile.
Does anyone have any experience with this program and is it a bunch of BS? http://www.tip.duke.edu/talent_searches/grades_4-5/

She has already been determined to be gifted. She is in the school's EXPO program which is for gifted and talented.

I did something similar but for Johns Hopkins when I was in 3rd grade. I must have done poorly because I never heard anything about it again. My niece also did the Johns Hopkins one and went on to take some college classes in Jr High and High School. I believe she will have the majority of her core classes done by the time she actually goes to college.

Years ago, when my ex was doing his residency at Duke....Duke had a summer camp for G/T kids in math and science. It was for upper elementary and middle school students. It is connected to the TIP program and is at the top of the TIP home page.
It was a well respected program back then...30 yrs ago....and very innovative at the time. I doubt that has changed, just that there are more similar programs around the country now.

I called the district coordinator for their gifted services department. I asked her to explain the program to me and I understand it better now. The 4th and 5th grade program basically is getting them ready for their 7th grade program which will in turn do what your niece does in Jr. High and High school. They also send parents info periodically on how best to handle and challenge a "gifted" child. I have had none of the behavioral challenges that seem to come with some gifted children but I would be interested in what I can do to help keep her from getting bored. I asked her point blank if it was worth it because she is already in EXPO and she said she specifically wanted this program for the kids and that she thinks it goes above what EXPO does and that she thinks it's a great opportunity.

My son was "gifted" in math and science....but terrible in English - he is dyslexic. Because his English and comprehension scores were much lower, the school system would not put him in any AP classes and he was bored. He graduated HS with a 3.5.....but there were many issues. His IQ is in the upper 140's.
If your school system does not provide enough for your daughter to keep her challenged and interested...find a private school that will.
We should have.....but hindsight is always 20/20.

I was chosen by the Duke Talent Search also. But it must have changed since I was in it. I looked at the link, and the details don't look quite the way I remembered.
I was, along with several classmates, given the option of taking the ACT or SAT in 7th grade. I chose the ACT and I scored an 18, which is pretty good for someone who wasn't in HS yet. :) I was still in Louisiana then, also.
Edit: never mind, I see they still have the 7th grade Talent Search, which is what my school participated in, rather than the 4th/5th grade version.

BEG, UNT has a summer program for kids in math & science. You may want to check into that, though I think she maybe a bit young for it.

The school is a really great school for a public school. It has a ton of parent participation and excellent teachers. They have an Expo program that she participates in. She leaves class to go to Expo several times a week. She still has to make up the work she misses when she is in Expo. The District Coordinator said that the Duke program just goes beyond what the school district is able to give the gifted kids although I have been very impressed with their Expo program so far. I have a lot of experience with their Expo program as all of my kids have been in it.

My son was selected for this. Basically he got a certificate suitable for framing, and then he went and took the SAT test. I forget what grade it was, 5th I think? He took the same test in the same room with a bunch of High School Juniors and did above the average for that level. So it was pretty cool-er-est. Then they had other programs that they could attend like the summer camps at Duke, but we didn't go that far as it started getting expensive after that. I do think it's a great program, just being selected is very prestigeous for them. Congrats to your daughter.

My son was in that Duke thingamyjiggie.....you'd have to ask his Mom about it....and now he's taking some test etc.....but the problem is, his only friends at school are the smart ones and they are few.....his grades are slipping because the dumb ones make fun of him and he wants to be "liked" by all. He's not a geek or clumsy or anything, just doesn't understand their foolishness and stupidity.
BTW: His social studies teacher (black, female, democrat, Obama worshipper) told his mother yesterday, at a parent teacher conference, that even though she doesn't agree with his politics, she loves having him in her class. She's says he is very up on current events and his history...... at first thought she had him confused with someone else but he was with his Mom when she said it...so.. :-)

Very good to hear! That speaks volumns about what type of parents you are.
