Title: A question about flu shots
Post by: Wretched Excess on January 24, 2009, 10:52:31 PM
I don't think that I have ever had the flu until this past weekend.  having the flu was a horrible experience.

how many of you get the flu shot?  is it worth it?

I was requird to get one every year while I was in the Army.  I always felt like crap for a few days afterwards.

I haven't had a flu shot since 1992, nor have I had the flu since.

But as one gets older and their immuno system becomes less effective, it might be a good idea to get the shot.

IMO, the flu shot is so not worth it. It seems like a lot of the time, they don't even give you the right strain to prevent it.

I got the shot a few years ago and felt absolutely horrible. Since then, I just "risk it." I've been fine without it.

I guess I just rolled snake eyes in the influenza game of life.  ****, it was awful, though.

I don't bother with a flu shot.  The last time I had the flu was 1996 or so.  It was absolutely awful... vomiting, fever, spinning room.  I had to leave the light on the entire time I was laid up in bed because if I turned it off, the spinning got even worse.

OMG!  the same thing!  I couldn't pick my head up off the pillow without almost passing out.  but having the light on did help!

At your age, it's a good idea.

I get 'em every year and make sure the kids get them as well.  Even if they have the strain wrong it still gives you a bit of a boost when tackling full on influenza.

I don't get the flu shot any more, either. Ever since the VA gave me a pneumonia inoculation, I caught pneumonia every year after that for several years. I stopped getting the flu shot a few years ago when there was a shortage of vaccine. I don't THINK I've had the flu since.

I never had a flu shot and I am still fine. Just take the usual precautions.

I have one just about every year and I haven't had the full flu in over ten years. After a shot I may have a slight bout of cold like symptoms but that passes.I would say yes it is well worth the slight discomfort
of the shot !

I get them every year as well. I got a free flu shot through my employer in December (just had to get my doctor to give me a prescription to give to the pharmacist... Georgia law dictates that).   I haven't had the flu in at least 5 years.

I may not have gotten the flu, but I still picked up a nasty cold while at work, the tail end of which I'm still dealing with at the moment (coughing and stuffy nose still linger :( ).

I haven't had the flu in years.  Even this last bought of sickies was just a cold.

I get the flu shot if available (though obviously not the year there was a shortage, I'm young and healthy enough that I passed that year).  Even if it's the wrong strain in the shot that year, it at least will prevent a horrible flu experience if you do catch the bug.

The best prevention is to wash your hands often and I use the Purell throughout the day as well.  It's just a alcohol wash, I tend to stay away from anything labeled "antibiotic."

This was the first autumn in, like about ten autumns, that I didn't bother with getting the influenza vaccine.

And guess what I have now.

I guess I should have bothered.

However, the vaccines seem to affect different people different ways; just because I've myself had nothing but effective results from them, doesn't mean others will too.

It's a roll of the dice; one tries it, to see what happens.

In my case, the dice came out for me, but I'm aware they might roll the other way for others.

I've had the flu shot every year and also did not have the "real" flu. I'd be afraid to try to tough it out without it. My doc also told me to get the flu shot. The only shot I've had trouble with is the pneumonia shot.

I get the shot every year.  I spend a lot of time visiting hospitals, so my employer strongly encourages us to get them.  Other than having a sore arm for about 24 hours, I have never had any problems after getting the shots.
