Aide: Paterson picks Gillibrand as next NY senator

By MICHAEL GORMLEY, Associated Press Writer Michael Gormley, Associated Press Writer – 53 mins ago

ALBANY, N.Y. – Gov. David Paterson has picked Democratic U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill New York's vacant U.S. Senate seat, an aide to the governor said early Friday, a day after Caroline Kennedy abruptly withdrew from consideration.

Gillibrand, a second-term lawmaker from upstate New York, will be named to fill the seat vacated when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned to become secretary of state in the Obama administration, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity because an announcement hadn't been made. An announcement was scheduled for later Friday.

Gillibrand's office didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

She was considered one of the top contenders in Paterson's selection process, along with Kennedy and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Paterson's appointment lasts until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton's term.

As I said in the Clinton as SofS thread, this woman is the congressional rep for me (and probably Carl, too).  She served in Andrew Cuomo's HUD, which was labelled as one of the most corrupt ever.

What this means is that both Schmuck Schumer and Gillibrand will be up for re-election in 2010, along with Gov. Paterson.  Let's see if the NYS GOP has anyone who can challenge any of them.  Rudy Giuliani is supposedly eyeing the Governor's Mansion, but I haven't heard anything lately.

I am not sure how her seat in the House will be filled, whether by appointment or special election and if so when.

Hopefully we will be able to take that one back to the Republican side of the aisle.

I should also note that the article paints her as somewhat conservative.
That is nonsense, she did what she had to so as not to lose favor in what is still a somewhat conservative district.
That however isn`t what it once was as more and more libs have migrated from the City and New England.

As Senator she will be in lockstep with the entire socialist agenda of O.

Still, this is better than Caroline, the ugly duckling princess of Camelot.  At the very least, Gillibrand once had to win an election.  They are reporting that she is anti-gun control and popular with the NRA.  At least that's something.  I'm in NY, too, guys, way up north.  We are redstate country up here, our rep is a republican.

I understand Peter King is interested for the 2010 senate seat.  I like him, he takes terrorism seriously, unlike some people I could mention.

We don't have to take the potential lockstep sitting down.  These people work for us, and I've never written these jokers so much in my life as in the past few weeks.  I've written Upchuck many times and given him a piece of my mind, not that it'll do any good.  Good for the soul, though.

Who was the last Republican congressman you had in your district.

I always got a great deal of merriment out of that despite the popularity of Franklin Roosevelt and despite his landslide elections, Hyde Park steadfastly elected, and then constantly re-elected, a Republican congressman.

One year--1938--Roosevelt made a really big, really concerted, effort to get Hamilton Fish out of there, but failed......and failed spectacularly.

Oh my.

Quote
ALBANY - Gov. Paterson, defying the liberal wing of his Democratic Party, has chosen little-known, NRA-backed, upstate Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as New York's junior senator, it was learned last night.

The surprising - and, for many Democrats shocking - decision to pick the conservative Gillibrand, 42, from Hudson in Columbia County, was disclosed by the governor in calls to party officials and some members of the state's congressional delegation, many of whom said they were unhappy with the selection, sources said.

Gillibrand, a mother of two occasionally resented by colleagues for being an aggressive self-promoter, was strongly backed for the post by Charles Schumer, the state's senior senator, who said a woman and an upstater was needed on next year's ticket.

Paterson's decision - to be officially announced today at noon at the state Capitol - was made just 24 hours after Caroline Kennedy took herself out of the running.

The decision was a major rebuff to some of the state's best-known Democrats interested in Clinton's seat, including Attorney General and former federal Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, for whom Gillibrand once worked as a junior lawyer; Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, and Reps. Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan and Steve Israel of Suffolk County.

Sources said "at least five" members of the state's Democratic congressional delegation called Paterson to protest the possibility of Gillibrand's selection. One, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of Nassau County, even threatened a primary challenge. Gillibrand faces a special election in 2010.

Democratic activists predicted that Cuomo, son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, would also "seriously consider" challenging Paterson in a primary next year.

Calls were made from Paterson's office to leading Democrats and Republicans throughout the afternoon, inviting them to a special meeting room attached to the Capitol for "a major announcement."

The inclusion of several prominent Republicans among the invitees was an early sign to insiders that Paterson planned to pick an upstate Democrat.

Gillibrand has won two successive elections in one of the heaviest GOP districts in the state, first upsetting incumbent Rep. John Sweeney and, in November, defeating former state GOP chairman and multimillionaire Alexander Treadwell, in one of the most expensive races in the nation.

Liberal Democrats have been wary of her because she ran for re-election with the backing of the National Rifle Association, opposed the federal TARP program to rescue banks, and has been less than enthusiastic about gay marriage.....

John Sweeney was who she defeated.
He was a leader in the Florida recount event but eventually proved to be a flawed candidate on personal issues.

Gerald Soloman preceded him.
I met him a few times and he was both a fine man and deep Conservative.

I remember Solomon, who I used to see on C-Span during the early 1990s (this was just before I went to the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants); he always struck me as a solid guy.

I know nothing of Sweeney.

Sweeney wound up having a New York State Police report about a domestic violence issue leaked.  It was rumored in mid '07 that he was going to run for his seat again, then he got nailed for DWI on I-87.  He had been at a bar that I walk by every day at work.  That arrest pretty much ended any political ambitions he could have.

And, Tucker, at work, one of the guys asked nine other guys (he was the tenth) who they'd hit on--Sarah Palin or Gillibrand.  It was 9 to 1 Palin . . .

I would have chose Palin as well. When you're not kickin boots, it's help during conversation if the person you're talking to has the same belief system as your self.

Apparently, the NY Libs are "howling" over this appointment, and she is endorsed by the NRA as well. I hope she has the balls to back up a filibuster of a renewed and permanent AWB bill.

When she first ran against Sweeney there was nothing conservative about her.

That headline above "Dems Howl"  I love it!  She's not perfect for us, but I just think when so much is going wrong right now, I count my blessings because it could have been much, much worse.

That photo comparison of right vs. left women never fails to get to me.  There are also a few more to add on each side.  Sarah on the right, Janet Napolitano on the left.  The whole thing can be expanded, going back to Eleanor Roosevelt.  And, of course, Michelle and her mean mouth.

Could also do one for men.  Moonbattery today has a hilarious picture of Larry King.  Robert Redford has turned ugly (moonbattery will do that to you), Sean Penn is hideous.

Heard Upchuck talking at the press conference covering this.  He made some snarky comment to the effect that, now that she's representing the whole state, not just cow country, she will come to appreciate the horrors of gun violence.  The audience laughed.

Meanwhile, with the loss of Princess Caroline WaPo is grousing about...

...glass cielings for women?

Quote
With her abrupt exit this week from consideration for the Senate, Caroline Kennedy added her name to a growing list: women who have sought the nation's highest offices only to face insurmountable hurdles.

Like Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin before her, Kennedy illustrated what some say is an enduring double standard in the handling of ambitious female office-seekers. Even as more women step forward as contenders for premier political jobs, observers say, few seem able to get there.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/22/AR2009012204149.html

Chick withdraws from consideration, another chick is appointed and WaPo sees this as prima fascia proof America is sexist?

And what's with the sudden citation of the plight of Sarah Palin? @#$%ing libs can't even keep their story straight over lunch.

There's no way this woman can effectively represent the state of NY.

She a mother of two.  With a NEWBORN for christsakes!

Weren't we told for almost 5 months that there is NO WAY that a woman could do both?

And weren't we told this was akin to child abuse for a mother to try and do such a job AND take care of her children?

Did she refuse to abort a child that was known to have a disability? If not then there isn't any any issues with her.

Never thought of that.  That's a good argument.  H5 for it, TX.

The scramble is on to fill her seat in the 20th Congressional District.  Both my wife's and my MIL's former and current overall bosses are in the running, on the Republican side.  One of those guys, their former overall boss, ran against the "****ing steamroller" that hit the bump named Ashley Dupree (sp?) for Governor in '06.
