"President Obama placed the Middle East at the forefront of his first hours in office yesterday as he sought to make good on his promise of “ushering in a new era of peace”.

In a flurry of telephone calls from the Oval Office, he reached out to leaders in the region and vowed to engage immediately in pursuit of a permanent Arab-Israeli settlement.

The spokesman for President Abbas revealed that Mr Obama had told the Palestinian leader that their conversation was his first with a foreign statesman since taking office. Mr Obama also spoke to President Mubarak of Egypt, Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Prime Minister, and King Abdullah of Jordan."Timesonline/UK (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article5563280.ece)

We know where his priorities lie.

Yeah, there's a lot of lie to his priorities.

This just highlights his arrogance.  How many american presidents tried to establish a peace treaty between Israel and Palestine?  How many were successful? None.

That he called the Palestinian must delight the Arabs and terrorists. Wonder if does the same for the American Jews who voted for him? Or the Israelis?

I'm assuming that the moment the call went through, the IDF went from DefCon 3 to DefCon 2.  Me thinks that some Iranian WMD facilities are gonna be served up under glass in the near future.

So much for the long standing policy of NOT negotiating with TERRORISTS. But, I guess that really went away when Clinton hosted Arafat in the White House

Actually Abbas is the leader of the more moderate Fatah party. He's not the elected leader of the Palestinians and Hamas. Fatah does believe in Israel's right to exist. One wonders how he's going to resolve this issue. He's essentially thumbing his nose at Hamas, and all who support them. I think Condy has had meeting with Abbas in the past.
