LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Less than a minute into his presidency, Barack Obama committed his first gaffe.
The new president of the United States said in his inaugural address that "Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath."
That's wrong. Forty-three Americans, including Obama, have taken the oath of office.
One president, Grover Cleveland, served two terms, separated by Benjamin Harrison's. Cleveland is counted as both the 22nd and the 24th president. (To be fair, Cleveland was probably big enough to count as two separate people, judging by the paintings.)
It was a small mistake, and one a swooning press will easily ignore.
But it does say something about the man. He's been running for this particular office for a long time. Couldn't he or his staff have figured out how many people had held it before?
Maybe he should have asked his immediate predecessor. One can imagine the field day the editorial classes would have with such a pronouncement by the former miscommunicator in chief.

I heard that he wants to rename "Idaho" to "Imahoe" as punishment for voting 61% for mccain/palin. the fools. then he is going to outlaw potatoes.

if he says it, we must make it so. but I still dunno where we're gonna find 7 more states. East and West Texas may be a good start.

Pacific Alaska (along the Inside Passage) and Northern Alaska? North Florida and Spanish Florida? New York City State and New York State (i.e. everything but the city)? Chicago State and Illinois?
Those should be worth a net increase of 4 red states

Well, before Jimmy Carter gave it all away, there was the Panama canal zone, Okinawa, Iwo Jima (Rode Isle-land move over), maybe the Phillipines could have been added.......and with the Shah dying of cancer maybe he would have agreed to making Iran a state before he died.

Dang.
I was hoping we could eliminate a few states starting with the ones on the left coast then taxachusetts.
