A few of us have been talking about setting up a meet up in Savannah GA.
If you are interested let's figure out a date and all the other details.
-
I'm definitely interested, obviously, since I live there. :cheersmate:
We just need to see what the best date for everyone is.
-
No love for those on the Left coast. :( If I still lived in VA, I would be there. :cheersmate:
-
*bump* Come on people... quit avoiding this thread! :cheersmate: Savannah is the best choice for the next GTG because there are several CC'ers in this region.
-
If I need time off from work, that will be my main problem. I can meet up with Freeper on Friday and drive down there Saturday morning. I was hoping I would get a break between classes, but I don't. We can spend Saturday in Savannah but we may have to get started early. :cheersmate:

That could probably work, but I'll have to ask my employer to either give me that Saturday off or work a 7-3 shift. I'm sure they can accommodate me.

All I need is a couple of weeks to make the money to do this. So whenever you guys can get time off for this should work for me. If we leave sat morning Chris I wont have to take any time off but, if need be I can take a friday off.
-
I can make it to ATL by 9pm Friday. We could be in Savannah by midnight or 1am. That would be nice, but it would be a long-ass day.
Looks like I'm not getting a break from school until May.

Who else is near Savannah? IS there anything near Savannah?

I was hoping we'd hear from Rebel (Augusta) but that may not happen. :(

Well, y'all would have to wait awhile for me, then. The odds of me getting the day off aren't good. :bawl:
Y'all would just have to wait until after 4 for me to make an appearance.

Augusta would be cool with me It would be about 140 miles for ACC and about the same from Atlanta to Augusta

Wuss! You'd miss out on River Street, and Sarge said he'd get reservations for a restaurant somewhere down that way.

Dont get me wrong I'd love to come down there but if Chris cant make it that far I would settle on Augusta

Alright, but don't count on me being able to get there. I highly doubt I can get a Saturday off work. Besides, if I worked 7-3, I wouldn't be there until after 6.

Ok so looks like it will have to Savannah then. Well we have a few weeks anyway to work this out because you all know I need to make some money first.
-
I have money. What I don't have right now is time.
This is going to have to happen on a Saturday.
-
Okay, I will do whatever it takes to get a Saturday off, whether it be Savannah or Augusta. Just need to have that date ready for me to give to my employer a week or two in advance.

Too bad I cant sell you some of my time. :-)

I say we give it a couple of days so all that may be interested can chime in and see what we can work out before setting a date. We will make it so we have at least 2 to 3 weeks to prepare for time off and whatever else we need to do to get ready.
How about we give till this coming friday for folks to opt in on this and go from there? After that more folks would be welcomed but they would have abide by whatever date we set.

Count me in; I'm quite near Savannah (Hinesville, home of Fort Stewart).
:cheersmate:

*bump* :-)

Go for it peeps. I've stickied this until it dies or you all have the event. Keep me posted if it isn't going to happen and I'll remove it!
Have fun!

thanks, jty! :)

I'm not near Savannah :bawl: I'm outside of Atlanta, so I don't even know if I can make it to a get together 3 hours away.
What a bummer.

Well, if y'all want it in Atlanta again, that's fine, but that would mean several folks NOT going. Maybe those of you closer to Atlanta can have a separate get-together while those of us near Savannah can have our own.
-
140 miles to Augusta works much better for me, but if that is not the general consensus, then DON'T sway your decision on my account. Do what works best for you :cheersmate:

Alright... let's go ahead and do a vote: Savannah or Augusta?
I may not be able to go to Augusta, unless my employer gives me two days off. Plus, school would get in the way.
-
Looks like I might be able to go to Savannah :o Woot!
-
Looks like I might be able to go to Savannah :o Woot!
Really? Woot!
I could pull off Augusta, if we had it during my Spring Break. March 7-16th. I would need plenty of time to book a hotel room, though. I may go ahead and warn my employer that I will need a Friday/Saturday off around that time, just in case. I can work the rest of the week to make up for it.
-
Sounds good, ACC!
The only weekend I can't go is the weekend of March 1st. Other than that, it is on for me.

If you are able to make it to Savannah, I suggest the SpringHill Suites by Marriott for your hotel stay. LOL

That would work for me. Just gotta convince the employer to let me work Monday through Friday of that week, and have Saturday off (and maybe Sunday too, so I can recover... lol ).
And it will be nice to NOT be the only female there. :lmao:

Should be enough time to convince the boss or get a co worker to switch days with you.
-
Okay, I was planning on putting together a preliminary list of folks who may be attending:
Me
Freeper (and a potential date... lol)
Chris
LadyLiberty
DumbassTanker
Rebel
Am I missing anyone? Or has anyone reneged?
-
I am in for March 15th, and I will look into booking at that Marriot
-

I've stayed at that hotel when I had to come down here to visit the school for orientation. Loved it, and well worth the price, especially if you have a laptop (wireless internet... WOOT!)
If you have AAA, you can get a discount. :)
-
LL, I have bad news. That hotel is completely BOOKED on the days of March 14-15th and 15th and 16th. I guess it has to do with St. Patty's day being on the 15th. :banghead:
-
Let me hit hotels.com and see what I can find nearby.

LOL, we could always have it the Saturday before then... the 8th. Would that work 'for everyone if St. Patty's day is too much?
-
Actually, the 15th works better for me.
-
You could all sleep over at ACC's. :-)
-
Actually, the 15th works better for me.
Yeah, but you won't be able to find a hotel, if you wait until the last minute. Most rooms already seem to be sold out for those days. How much are you willing to spend on a hotel room? I think what you may have to do is get a hotel in Statesboro, where Georgia Southern is. It's an hour away from Savannah, but it may be your best option.
-

I don't think y'all want to sleep in a smoking environment. :whatever:
However, my bedroom IS big enough that I can sneak a person in there for the night. :lmao:
-
Okay, my bad. I got a quote for multiple nights. I thought that was the SINGLE night rate.
(bye bye (http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/8774/tenbux.gif))

Any particular area I should be looking for a hotel in?

Any particular area I should be looking for a hotel in?
Well, I suggest looking at hotels on Abercorn Street, as that is where I am, and from my school (where several hotels are nearby) that is about 9 miles from River Street. However, you may have to stay further away than that, as the hotel my mom is staying at (the Marriott) is confirmed to be booked on St. Patty's Day, as are several other hotels.

Mmm... the $35-a-night Extended Stay on Abercorn loooks lovely.

I wish the Marriott was still available. Wireless Internet all throughout the hotel would have been great help to keep in touch, but I guess we'll just have to keep in contact by phone. I'll make my cellphone available once the plans are all in place (unless anyone needs it before then).

F*** and c*** and s***! That WAS the single night rate! Ow, my wallet! :bawl:
edit: I'm switching to Priceline :censored:

Where are we getting tanked meeting up?
I thought Sarge had suggested a place. I can't remember the name, but it's a restaurant on River Street.

If you don't mind a cab ride, check out prices in Hardeeville, SC.

I PM'ed Freeper. Is he bringing someone? We were planning on sharing a ride down since I'm passing by his way.

I have no idea if he's actually bringing anyone or not. We'll just have to wait and see what he says.
I may end up taking a taxi to River Street, if that's where we end up. I really do NOT want to bring the Mazda out there by myself on that day, unless someone wants to ride with me.

What hours is he working now? I don't see him online.

It seems like he works late into the night most of the time since he got the job. :(

Just to let you know, Hardeeville is 17 miles from Savannah ON 17. I tried to walk it once.....you'll probably meet one of the guys that's responsible for that shit. I'll be staying with my friend that lives in Savannah.

BTW, even though it's crawfish season, these damn things are SMALL. I need to come back in May. They should be pretty big by then.

I wonder if it's the Floridian CU'ers thinking they can crash it. I think it would be best that we keep the EXACT location of the GTG in PM.
Then again, they wouldn't be able to get into Savannah, anyway. :lmao:

A week-long re-enactor thing which I haven't actually looked up on the map yet. Kind of a last chance to get away from 3ID and be with my family, but also with some friends from here, before this tour of duty winds up.
The location is definitely PM material, but Savannah's going to be crazy that weekend anyway. I went to a function at a place in Richmond Hill that might be a good pick, I'll PM ya about it.

Well, I'm in Byram, where I'm from. I'm heading back to Augusta tomorrow. I did get to thinking about it. I need to be spending more time in Savannah. All my friends moved away. 2 ****ed me over majorly, but the good ones....all moved. One I saw in PA, the other, my best, lives in Savannah. He's from Augusta but lives in Savannah now.

GlobeTrekker is a travel show on PBS geared toward the under-30 crowd. This is their writeup of Savannah.
link (http://dg.ian.com/index.jsp?cid=132265&action=viewLocation&formId=102502)
Savannah's Historic District is flanked by the river, Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in the west and, to the east, Broad Street, the old commercial main street and offices. Broughton Street has since become the main thoroughfare of downtown Savannah. You can get an overview at the Savannah History Museum , behind the visitor center, in the restored Railroad Station at 303 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd (daily 9am-5pm; $3), where an informative jaunt through Native American culture, colonial development, the river and the Civil War is let down slightly by a slide show that is less a history lesson than a hard-sell promotion of Savannah's considerable charms. A block south, the Historic Railroad Shops (daily 9am-4pm) is a worthwhile slice of industrial architecture.
Most visitors take in one or two of Savannah's old mansions , such as the English architect William Jay's neoclassical Regency style Owen-Thomas House , 124 Abercorn St (tours Mon noon-5pm, Tues-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 2-5pm; $8; tel 912/233-9743), or the redbrick Georgian Davenport House , 324 E State St (Mon-Fri 10am-4.30pm, Sat 1pm-4.30pm; $4; tel 912/236-8097). The latter, the first restoration project of the Historic Savannah Foundation, is sparsely furnished but boasts a wonderful elliptical staircase and delicate plasterwork. The Green-Meldrim House , on Madison Square (Tues & Thurs-Sat 10am-4pm; $5; tel 912/232-1251), is a splendid Gothic Revival mansion with dramatic ironwork, which General Sherman used as his headquarters. At the southern edge of the Historic District, the Massie Heritage Interpretation Center , 207 E Gordon St (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; $3), is a simple, effective museum illuminating Savannah's architecture with displays on its neighborhoods and growth, and tracing influences from as far away as London and Beijing. While you can't go inside, the Mercer House on picturesque Monterey Square nearby is one of the grandest of the city's mansions and featured prominently in "The Book." Also worth a visit is another of Jay's Regency mansions, the Telfair Museum of Art , 124 Abercorn St (Mon noon-5pm, Tues-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 1-5pm; $8, Sundays free; tel 912/232-1177), which also has the distinction of being the oldest art museum in the South.
A ten-minute drive east from Savannah will take you to the lovely Bonaventure Cemetery (dusk to dawn), swathed in trees and sloping down to the Wilmington River. The final resting place of luminaries such as Johnny Mercer and Conrad Aiken, it's also a major sight in "The Book" and written about there to great effect. Sylvia Shaw Judson's Bird Girl statue, which graces the cover and used to be situated here, has since been moved to the Telfair Museum of Art.

I think a walking tour would be a great way to start the GTG. We just need to find a good spot to meet.

I'm currently on crutches due to foot surgery a couple of weeks ago, so I may have to pass on the walk, but it's cool as long as I know the end point and ETA.

The walking tour was for Freeper and LL and whoever else wants to go since we were coming on from Hardeeville. I was going to use the stop by the park as an excuse to grab some lunch.

Okay. Well, I'll be meeting y'all then. You don't have to pick me up, since the directions to my apartment would be too complicated for y'all to understand. LOL

I hope it doesn't rain.

Just let me know what the final LZ and H-Hour are, I'll still be crutching it. Meet yerz when yer through with the 'Walking' part.

Okay, so now the plans are a little different. It looks as though we'll be going out to eat for the evening before going to a bar.
We still need to finalize the walking tour and find out who all will be going to that, and what we may do after dinner, as far as going to a bar is concerned.
:)

Well last count for the walking tour I had was three you, Chris, and me. And DAT might show up after the walk.
Maybe you can ask around ACC and find a good place to have some drinks at.

I was hoping to eat after the tour. You know, save up my energy for all that drinking. :cheersmate:
As for where we're all meeting, I have no idea. I thought Sarge was supposed to find a place. I don't care as long as it's not a madhouse.

Chris, since it will be Saturday and the 15th, trust me...EVERYWHERE will be a madhouse. I'll look around for something this week if I have to.
For the walking tour, I figured we could meet at an adjacent parking lot.

:rotf: Okay, glad to know there will be enough going for the tour.
I think the real question is, are the rest of us ready for Freeper?
:bolt:

I'll try to meet up after the walking tour. Oh, don't get me wrong, I am walking, ....from bar to bar.
-
Okay, we need to work on a meeting spot for the tour (and possibly dinner), and then another one for the bar-hopping.
*opens Google Earth*
Edit: Okay, those of us on the walking tour SHOULD be able to walk to River Street, if that's where we want to go for the bars. :)
-
I'll try to meet up after the walking tour. Oh, don't get me wrong, I am walking, ....from bar to bar.
I will be sure to drive everyone around :-) You puke, you walk :rotf:

That could be a problem. Everyone will be on River Street that day, since St. Patty's Day is technically the 15th (Saturday) this year, so close parking will come at a premium.
Just a warning.
I'll let Chris and Freep know they have to walk. :rotf:

Okay, if this is what we'll be doing, then I'll get started on picking out a meeting area and posting the directions in a mass PM to all attending.
Monday, I'm heading out to the area being discussed, and will see what is the easiest to get to.
We also need to decide on a TIME to meet. Any suggestions? I think early afternoon, 1 or 2 pm, would be good.
-
1 or 2 sounds good.

I was messing around on Google Earth, and discovered that there was an ice cream shop near one of the points of interest on the tour.
God is messing with me, I just know it. :bawl:

Okay, I'm setting up the GPS tonight towards a particular destination near the walking tour, and am heading out in the morning to scope things out and pick out the meeting spot. :)
Some folks have yet to share their cell #'s, and I'll need them so we can keep in contact, especially after the walking tour. PM the numbers, if you don't mind, and I 'll provide you with mine, if you don't have it already.
I do not have any idea of where we'll be meeting AFTER the walking tour, to meet up with others for bar-hopping (another reason why the cell #'s are needed). Any ideas?

[Tue 01:35] <ACrazyConservative> okay, here's my idea...those who are not attending get to ask truth or dare questions of those attending.
Just so it's remembered

Okay, I didn't stay as long as I wanted while scouting. I started getting some bad headaches again. :(
However, I have a preliminary location for meeting.
I found both a decent parking lot AND a public parking garage near Lincoln Street, which is next to the Owens-Thomas House.
-
Okay, I've hit a snag. I did not realize just how far the restaurant we talked about going to for dinner after the walking tour was from there. :censored:
I'll have to find something closer, or else the tour may have to be cancelled, which I do not want to happen. :(
Any suggestions?
-
Okay, I found something within distance of the walking tour that might interest y'all. PM me for details (I think I've given out enough already for lurkers to see :thatsright: ).

GTG attendees and ne'er-do-wells, your attention is required in the Lounge. :cheersmate:
The weather forecast for Saturday is a 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms, with highs in the low 80's and lows in the low 50's.

Well crap. :( I'll go buy myself a large umbrella, then, since the recent storms destroyed my pocket umbrella.
If we can't do the walking tour, then I can always give y'all a tour of the college campus. :rotf:

I may carry one, but I don't expect it to rain. At least it will be warm. :)

Alright, just to remind everyone:
since the restaurant is right near River Street, I figure that will be a good meeting place for everyone. We'll be eating dinner at 4:30, and I have the reservation made for 6 folks.
Oh and one more thing:
Someone has yet to hand over his cell phone number, so we can contact him when we're done eating. :whatever: He knows who he is. :asssmack:

Thanks, I do plan to try to stealth into town early with plenty of lead time to park and then hobble to the treffpunkt.

I left 'em at around 2000 when we finished at the restaurant. Kev decided to drink his dinner and so didn't join us. Weather was fine then and the rest of them are probably either back in their digs or too plowed to care by now.
:innocent:
On edit - oops, maybe I spoke too soon - tornado warning came on one minute after I posted that. However it does not extend to Chatham County, where Savannah is, but big transient gusts are blasting the house here 40 miles away to the SW (I'm also outside the warning box).

PM me later for funny stories of Freeper drunk ... :rotf: Remember I've got 8 years of blackmail info. on him..u only missed one evening..

Okay, I am the first to report back. The others are on their way home now.
There was no hook-up (kinda disappointed, actually. I forgot how cute someone was, and the pics of a certain someone else did not really do him justice. :naughty: ) We hung out at City Market for awhile, and I had 4 beers there. I was outdrinking them at first. :lmao:
4 of us: Chris, Freeper, DAT and I, went to eat at a fun little restaurant called The Pirate's House. The food was alright, but with the prices, very overrated. And it was also where Chris tried Bailey's for the first time (he didn't like it. :bird: :lmao: ).
Right now, I am nursing a major hangover. :bawl:
All of Savannah was in the dark last night, after the 4 of us left. (lots of looting going on), and we stayed at Kev's friend's place. We sat outside for awhile and just continued to talk, about life, about politics, about the CC vs. LU...I mean...CU bullcrap, and such.
Us four tried to share a bedroom, with some of us on the floor (I know, I know, sounds dirty, but we didn't care at that point) but Chris and his snoring ended up sending Kev and I out to our cars to sleep. :bolt:
I ended up leaving late in the night, because I was very restless. I could not believe the extent of the power outage here driving back to the apartment.
Unfortunately, because we were too busy drinking and chatting, the camera I brought was pretty much ignored. There are a few pictures, and as I said, WILL REMAIN PRIVATE (if you want to see them, you'll have to ask me very nicely), because I would rather not share them with the CU lurkers. I'll try to get the camera finished up by Monday so I can take it in and have the photos put on a disc.
It's a shame Kev didn't go with us to dinner. He would have loved talking to DT, I think. :)
-
Well ACC and the others survived meeting me.
:lmao:
Oddly enough I was the one that ended up being sober and drove us to Kev's buddies house then I got drunk lol
Power came back on at 6 am so Kev came back in the house and before too long Chris's snoring had him, and me wide awake so we woke him up and headed back to Augusta. Chris left Athens about an hour ago and he has Atlanta traffic to look forward too now.
I enjoyed meeting ACC, Reb, Chris, DAT, and Reb's assorted buddies.
-
Well, I thought we would get a play-by-play, blow-by-blow, description of events at the get-together as they happened.
But no; apparently those at the get-together are so wrapped up in each other they forgot we exist.
At this time, I am perfectly fine to not be hearing about it :uhsure:
PM me later for funny stories of Freeper drunk ... :rotf: Remember I've got 8 years of blackmail info. on him..u only missed one evening..
Just remember those drunk stories could be embarrassing to you as well. :-)

Damn, damn, damn :bawl:
I am glad you all had a great time, and I WILL meet you one day :innocent:

I didnt hear Kev snoring that I recall I must have slept through that. But you are right Chris was cutting down redwood trees moments after falling asleep.
Sleeping on the floor wasnt a picnic either :banghead: :-)

It was still kinda funny though. I wish I had worded it in the first post that I had "slept with multiple guys" . Would have caused the lurkers from CU to :o
First, I was on the floor, then when Kev left the room, I stole the bed. :-) When he came back, that might have caused a little awkwardness. :rotf: Then he went back to the truck for good, and one of his buddies shows up with his shirt off, and hops in the bed. :o I would have stuck around, but I did not like being in the room with a chain saw. :lmao:

He was actually pretty quiet. I was wondering if he had left.
Hell, I woke myself up with my snoring a few times. That's what happens when I have to sleep on my back. :rotf:
It wasn't too bad. Give me a blanket and pillow and I can sleep anywhere.

Savannah Blacks Out for St. Pat's Party (http://www.abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=4459558)
Savannah's weekend St. Patrick's Day celebration turned from emerald green to pitch black late Saturday as the city lost power, plunging the downtown party into darkness as thousands roamed the streets.
The blackout hit at about 10 p.m. as powerful thunderstorms tore through southern Georgia and South Carolina just north of Savannah. Georgia Power said about 150,000 customers in the region were without electricity after transmission lines were knocked out by the storms.
We broke teh city. :p

Me snore? Oh hell to the naw. I couldn't get asleep enough to do that. Damn, I needed a fan.
Do you guys remember the damage on Hwy 3? Tornado ripped right through where we had driven. Debris was all over the road. As one area, acres of Loblolly Pines were broken off about 15 feet from the ground.
It was a messed up night when the power went out. Sorry I didn't meet you, DAT. I figured you'd join up later.
-
Me and Freeper passed through an area that had a tornado touch down. There was a straight line of trees for a hundred yards that had been knocked over.

That was when we were on 3 in SC heading to Augusta.
BTW, I doubt it was that one, but a tornado touched down in Effingham County and knocked out a power plant.

I found a picture of Freeper. That's him on the left.

Awww, the dogs are adorable, Kev! :)
I need to get that camera finished before I take it in to Wal-Green's. I guess I'll just take pics of the college campus. :p
-
Freeper does have kind of a Cheech thing going, now that you mention it.
Kev, sorry I couldn't stick around, had to drive back to Hinesville so I couldn't get wasted, and pub-crawling with a crutch sounded like more work than fun.
-
Thank you for posting your picture, Freeper. Nice to see you!
Those dogs are ADORable...and very clean too. I have seen that kind of dog many times with really goopy eyes.

You look great freeper!
I still think it would be great if we had a CC get together in a blackout. That way I could grope around in the dark and have a ready excuse! :naughty:

ACC and Chris said all the other ones ended at 11 everyone went back to the motel so this was the most interesting one so far. It will be hard to top a city wide blackout :rotf:

Well, Savannah IS well-known for it's St. Patty's day celebrations, and I think the blackout actually helped us in that endeavor this year. LOL

Last time I recall that happening was at fort hood. We were quite drunk and my roomate was trying to light his cigarette off a hotplate after I called him a dumbass I found myself opening the refrigerator so the little light would come on so we could see. :thatsright:

Exactly :rotf:
Like I said we were drunk. :thatsright:
What happened is an ice storm hit and this was the night before my ETS so I ended up spending an extra day in the Army because Hood was closed.
Since it was my last day in the Army we drank a hell of a lot. :couch:
-
Like I said, there's nothing like having a power outage when you're drunk :lmao:
Be grateful it wasn't July in Savannah when the lights went out in Ga.

Oh yeah, that could have been so much worse. :o It was hot enough in that house, anyway. LOL
