WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama called disclosures about Treasury choice Timothy Geithner's tax problems an embarrassment Wednesday but said Geithner's "innocent mistake" shouldn't keep him from confirmation as the new administration's top official in urgent efforts to revive the economy.
The revelations that Geithner had failed to pay $34,000 in taxes several years ago derailed Senate Democrats' plans to speed him to confirmation by Inauguration Day, but senators in both parties said the information was unlikely to torpedo his chances in the end.

Obama had hoped for approval by Tuesday, but senators now have scheduled Geithner's confirmation hearing for next Wednesday, with Senate debate and a vote sometime after that.

Two Republicans objected to scheduling a confirmation hearing this Friday at the Senate Finance Committee after the panel disclosed Geithner had failed to pay taxes he owed for several years. Democrats were working to clear away the obstacles, holding out hope that he could still be confirmed the day Obama is sworn in.

The president-elect, asked about the situation on Wednesday, said, "Look is this an embarrassment for him? Yes. He said so himself. But it was an innocent mistake. It is a mistake that is commonly made for people who are working internationally or for international institutions. It has been corrected. He paid the penalties."

"My expectation is that Tim Geithner will be confirmed," Obama said.

While sitting in the dental waiting room yesterday, they had Fox News on, and there was a discussion about this pick.  They had the "moderator" and then someone from the right, and someone from the left.

The Right opened up asking the point about how the rest of us are supposed to feel obligated to pony up the doe when the person who will be running in the IRS has "forgotten" to do it themselves.  Lefts counterpoint?  "Republicans are just causing problems by attacking the picks.  It doesn't matter what he's done, because Obama picked him.  If they would just shut up and get in line then we can move ahead."  (Some of those where my words, but thats exactly what she was saying).

My jaw kinda dropped at that.

I saw a report this morning that he was even reimbursed for the taxes he didn't pay by his employer.  Boy that is some really absent-minded thought processes.  And this is the genius that they want to put in charge?  Let us all remember, he is such an expert and no one can do the job he can do.  Which seems to be the mindset of this administration from Mr. O all the way through his cabinet "Oh yes there is conflict of interest or past convictions but THIS person is the best person for the job NO-MATTER-WHAT."  And we are to just roll over and take it up the arse every single time for the sake of "coming together for change"

Of course I'm not sure if this is even half as bad as his global environmental Csar that he has picked.  *shudder*

Didn't several Republican candidates for appointments to higher offices get railroaded out for the exact same reasons ?!?!?!?!?  What's good for the goose is good for the gander...

That was very much the subject at hand on the Fox and Friends show I watched yesterday...or the day before.  Amazing how selective the short term memory can be on Capital Hill.

You're thinking of Linda Chavez.  Bush initially picked her for Department of Labor in 2001 but she withdrew after it was revealed she had given money to an illegal woman from Guatemala in the early 90's, even though the FBI later determined Chavez had done nothing wrong.

Skipping my income taxes would substantially improve my economic position, too, I can see why they think the guy's a wizard but I doubt that's the approach the new Administration has in mind for me and the rest of Flyover Country.  Just as we finally made it past one of the Joe Biden Threshholds of Great Wealth - it looks like we may gross over 120K next year for the joint filing, which was the lowest of the numbers Ol' Scattermouth mentioned in his campaign (Before Obama exiled him to the Fortress of Solitude).

Cant imagine why..../sarc

This was an intentional tax dodge. Given the facts that he was given the $ to pay back the tax he dfailed to pay, and had to complete paperwork to get this reimbursement. PLUS he has stated that he did the accountinfg work HIMSELF. He needs to go home. And stay there.

wasn't there a media uproar just recently about some Plumber that hadn't paid his real estate taxes ? Didn't they rake that guy over the coals because of it ?

I guess Joe the Plumber best pay his taxes but  someone nominated to be The Sec of Treasury shouldn't be bothered about such menial duties.

When a Democrat doies it, it's "An Embarrassment".

When a Conservative does it, it's "A Crime That Needs To Be Fully Investigated And Prosocuted To The Fullest Extent Of The Law".  :whatever:

What's pathetic is that most of the Repubs will go along with this appointment because they are too chicken shit to stand up to the Messiah. Secondly, he is loved on Wall Street (a Paulson clone). While those of us on main street get screwed. Thirdly, they have bigger fish to lamely try to derail like the A.G & EPA picks of Obama.

I say let it happen - If Obama wants to own the bailout by taking on its chief architect, good for him..And better for us.
