Mayor Sheila Dixon indicted

Baltimore Mayor Sheila A. Dixon was charged today in a 12-count indictment, according to the Maryland State Prosecutor's Office's Web site.
Dixon was charged with perjury, theft, fraudulent misappropriation and misconduct, stemming from gifts she received from former boyfriend and developer Ronald H. Lipscomb, who was also charged earlier this week.
Dixon has been the target of a nearly three-year probe by State Prosecutor Robert A. Rohrbaugh into corruption at City Hall, an investigation that has centered on allegations that Dixon has used her office to award lucrative contracts to various people including her sister, her then-boyfriend and her former campaign chairman.
Dixon is expected to appear this afternoon at a news conference at the Clipper Mill offices of her attorney, Arnold M. Weiner.

but honestly, doesn't this seem like just a bunch of petty political SOP BS? looks more like a smear of Dems to me.
while Bu$hCo remains unindicted for "awarding lucrative contracts" to Halliburton/KBR, Blackwater, Brown & Root, etc etc etc.
and the Bu$h Crime Family wrote the book on "awarding lucrative contracts".
just google "bush contract lucrative awards".
makes Mayor Dixon seem like a Sunday School teacher.

Au contraire! It would be both naive and hypocritical for us to assume corruption doesn't exist on our side of the fence. Even before Blago and now this, you don't have to look far for examples. Senator Reid, Speaker Pelosi and, with few notable exceptions (Dennis Kucinich being the most obvious), the entire 110th Bush ass-kissing Congress come to mind. Republicans are unique only in the degree of their greed, hypocrisy and bigotry. No one would like to see Bushco prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law more than I, but whether or not that happens, we as Democrats and thus the party of the rule of law and the Constitution have an obligation to keep our own house clean. Moral relativism has no place in a democratic republic.

Baltimore, like almost every large city, is a Dem satrapy. When you have uninterrupted one-party control for very extended periods, it would be a miracle if the place wasn't rancid with corruption...and Baltimore is no miracle.

All Irish immigrants were democrats. You could be killed if you weren't. I (my generation of brothers and cousins*) may be the 1st in my entire family, which is from the Appalachian region, that votes Republican.

The sad thing is this isn't even has as bad as their school system. They could literally turn the kids in to the street to learn what they may and the kids would wind up with a better education. Baltimore public schools are at least on par with DC public schools.

Probably not a stretch. Go to some Irish Catholic homes in Boston and you'll see larger shrines to Bobby and John Kennedy than to Jesus.

Why did that raise the hair on the back of my neck? Why did that send me off on a search of the net? Why wasn't there a picture of her with the story? Yep....just what I thought.....she's black.
Go ahead, call me racist, but after you live with blacks in positions of power for awhile you get these....these....feelings.

At the start of Barack Obama's whistle stop tour to Washington today, the president-elect hailed the "outstanding" mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter. In Wilmington, he acknowledged Mayor James M. Baker by name.
Not so in Baltimore.
Mayor Sheila Dixon was one of thousands of Obama supporters braving hours of sub-freezing temperatures to greet him at War Memorial Plaza. "It's an extremely huge deal for me," she said in an interview before Obama's address. "Words can't describe how ecstatic we are."
But even as he gazed at City Hall, the man who will be the nation's first black president did not acknowledge that Baltimore's first black female mayor was in attendance. ... Officially, the line from both the Obama and Dixon camps was that the 12-count indictment levied by a state prosecutor against the mayor last week had no impact on the ceremony.
Demaune Millard, Dixon's chief of staff, said the indictment, which includes charges of theft and perjury, never came up in conversations between the mayor's office and the inaugural committee organizing Obama's triumphant train trip to the White House.
Chris Mather, a spokeswoman for the inaugural committee, deflected questions about Dixon, insisting that the team's entire focus was on "renewing America's promise."

Dixon endorsed Obama almost a year ago today, before the Illinois senator was the front-runner. On Jan. 22 last year, at an historic Baltimore church once used as a safe house for slaves, Dixon said Obama's election would help fulfill the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dreams. Today, she repeated that hope and expressed her pride in taking her children to see Obama speak in person. ....

BALTIMORE — Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted Friday on charges that she accepted illegal gifts during her time as mayor and City Council president, including travel, fur coats and gift cards intended for the poor that she allegedly used instead for a holiday shopping spree.
The State Prosecutor's Office, which has been investigating corruption at City Hall for nearly three years, said Dixon received holiday gift cards for four years from several people. Prosecutors said the gift cards were to be distributed to needy families, but were instead used by Dixon to buy electronics _ including an Xbox, a PlayStation 2 and a camcorder _ clothes and other merchandise and also handed out to members of her staff.
"I am being unfairly accused," Dixon said in a statement. "Time will prove that I have done nothing wrong, and I am confident that I will be found innocent of these charges."

The mayor of Pittsburgh is named Ravenstahl and as joke for the game yesterday he was changing his name to Steelerstahl.
Someone on the radio commented "he could change his name to "Toiletstahl" and he'd still have a better name than the mayor of Baltimore. :-)
