Law doesn't require secondhand stores to test for lead

Resale, thrift and consignment shop owners who until Thursday feared new federal regulations would force them to close are relieved to learn their businesses are safe.

New rules in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, set to take effect next month, require children’s products, including clothing, to be tested for lead and phthalates, chemicals that make plastics more flexible.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, responsible for enforcing the law, issued a statement Thursday, clarifying that the law does not require resellers to test children’s products for compliance with new lead limits before they are sold.

For those who thought you would have to throw away all the clothes and toys your kids own... No you don't.

Common sense is in such short supply in this country.

No primitives at this bonfire yet.

For us this is good news. We buy ALOT of used clothing for our daughter (she's growing like a weed). You would be shocked at the quality clothing people donate.

Oh, I wouldn't be. I found a couple of little White Sox jerseys for my 6 month old at the neighborhood consignment store here called "Wee Wares". I was actually planning on going there today and buying the whole store out, but still may go there this weekend and spend quite an amount. Need a new car seat and other items anyway. Braydon's already wearing 12 month clothes, and not swimming in them either!

Just a word of caution with buying Car Seats from consignemnt stores.  There is no way of knowing if those seats have been in an accident, and if they were, they would need to be replaced.  Also, in case you were not aware, there are "expiration dates" for car seats, after a couple of years.  The plastic, and screw connections, etc, become weaker, and they might not act effectively in an accident.   Car seats is one area I spared no expense, and always bought new, after doing tons of research on which are the safest/best.

Clothes, strollers, whatever, I would buy at consignment stores, but not car seats.   Just my opinon, of course, but wanted the info out there, just in case some might not know about it.

Well, true. But I'm sure ya can always check out the websites of the manufacturer (Graco, Evenflow, et all) to see if a certain one has been recalled and just have it on hold at the store while ya check it out.
