Associated Press TORONTO - The first woman soldier to flee the U.S. military for Canada to avoid the Iraq war has been ordered deported along with her husband and children.
Kimberly Rivera said Wednesday her requests to stay on humanitarian and compassionate grounds were rejected.
Rivera served in Iraq in 2006 and came to Canada the following year after she refused redeployment.
She lives in Toronto with her husband and three children - the youngest is six weeks old and Canadian born.
Rivera says she'll discuss her options with her husband and supporters but feels she's come to the "end of the road."
The family must leave Canada by Jan. 27 unless the order is reversed.
The group War Resisters Support Campaign says four other resisters and their families face deportation in January alone.

Can't say I feel sorry for her. I don't understand how a person can volunteer for a job knowing that they could be shipped out at any time and then trying to run away later.

Couple of years in the slammer with a DD and a felony conviction at the end vs. a year in Iraq, you woudn't think the choice was all that tough. FOB life may suck but it beats the crap out of prison.

Problem is, they're probably just going to give her an OTH and show her the door, no hard feelings, yadda yadda yadda.
Damn, and there was a time when desertion during wartime meant a firing squad.

I don't know about the other services, but by and large the Army is sending desertion cases to General Court-Martial and has been doing business that way for awhile (We did just flush them with an OTH when we weren't at war, though). Sentences from what I've seen run from about one to four years, depending on what kind of stupid they demonstrate to the panel and/or Military Judge. Running away to Canada is generally worth extra points on the stupid scale.

It still can, but will never be used...

Unfortuneately.

The military is a very secure job, but if you don't follow orders, you are out. She needs to facet he music.

Quite a rack there.
She should have signed up for the Navy with those built-in pontoons.

Pretty much all women have a rack like that when they have a six week old infant.

Shouldn't this bitch get the Big Chicken Dinner? If deserting isn't Bad Conduct, I don't know what is...

Well, with a Duck Dinner on your resume, you're gonna be eatin' a lot of peanut butter and jelly. A DD is pretty much a showstopper for any employee, much less the felony conviction behind it.

...She thought about the military again. The Army offered job security, sign-on bonuses, a food and clothing allowance, medical benefits, housing allowance, "Everything I needed, they had. It's the best form of socialism" she thought. After talking to an Army recruiter in January 2006, she joined up for a second time—this time active duty to receive full benefits for her family. She was again sent to Ft. Jackson a month later. Because she had previously completed Basic Training in 2001, she was sent to Ft. Leonard Wood in March 2006 and after passing her truck driving course was assigned to G Company, 2-17 Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Ft. Carson, Colorado. For the next few months she spent two weeks of each month in the deserts of the Colorado Rockies and a month in Death Valley, California.

She doesn't seem to have had any motivation to serve to begin with.
-
I hope they drop the hammer on her.
-
She was in Iraq for THREE MONTHS. THREE FRIGGIN MONTHS. And as soon as she gets a mid-deployment leave, she bolts. And from the post, it looks like she never even left the FOB.
Eff her. She ain't worth the bullet.
-
She should be "assigned" to Gitmo.

Feminization of the military.
-
What is her DU screen name?
-
Has this been addressed at the DUmp?
-
Sorry but I have no sympathy for idiots like this.

Stuff like that will seriously test my determination to stay in the military no matter what.
