As to "free speech" I'm forced to agree with some other DUer (damn it all) . NBC can put whoever they want on the Today show or anywhere else and free speech does not even enter into it. I'm against a fairness doctrine for anyone and would even go so far as to say I'm very much against the foolish concept of "public ownership" of the airwaves.

Network responds to rumors after bumping her from 'Today'

By Paul J. Gough

Jan 5, 2009, 06:49 PM ET
NEW YORK -- NBC News denied Monday that conservative author Ann Coulter has been banned from the network after "Today" dropped her from Tuesday's program because of breaking-news events.

The Coulter incident garnered huge headlines, which reported that network sources said NBC was not going to allow the frequent guest to appear any more.

That's not true, NBC News said Monday. Coulter's segment was dropped from the schedule because of news that the show was expecting to cover in the Gaza Strip with the Israeli military action there and in Washington with the Obama transition. "Today" had booked former British prime minister Tony Blair. Coulter was to promote her new book, "Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America."

"We've had Ann Coulter on 'Today' many times, but because of the news in Washington and the Middle East, we decided to cancel her appearance tomorrow," NBC News said in a statement Monday. "Understanding the media as well as she does, we are sure she knows this happens from time to time. We look forward to welcoming her back in the future."

Of course, I think more people are interested in Anne's view of the crisis  than they are in the views of Annie Lennox, who  has been on shows a lot as spokesweirdo for some group or another.

On the heels of NBC's decision yesterday...looks like Harry Smith decided to pile on as well:

Quote
CBS's Harry Smith interviewed Ann Coulter on the "Early Show" Tuesday, and it was clear from the start the co-host had no interest in hiding his disdain for the conservative author.

In fact, he was downright rude from beginning to end referring to her as "a whiner," "goofy," "simplistic," and "sophomoric."

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2009/01/06/harry-smith-calls-coulter-simplistic-goofy-whining-sophomoric

They couldn't ban her cause their ratings can't sustain it.

It's hard for me to take her seriously when her No. #1 priority is to sell books.

Ann Coulter is a very bright entertainer. Her job is to be titillating and outrageous, even egregious. She is there to provoke a reaction, whether positive or negative.

Making inflammatory comments to piss people off is her job. And she gets paid well for that work.

That probably doesn't make her vitriol any easier to swallow, but that's how I see it. Ann laughs all the way to the bank, though I truly believe that she believes in essence what she says.

She's simply mirroring back liberal behavior if you think about it. I think she knows darn good and well what she's doing. She can be over the top in my opinion but I have to admit, she's usually on the money more often than not.

In some regards she is a lot like Bill Buckley. She just uses terminolgy most people can understand.

I don't think anyone should deliberately set out to offend but if what they say is truth and it offends someone oh well.

I somewhat think that's where the Conservatives/Reps are loosing the battle,to many are scared they might offend someone.

I don't think anyone should deliberately set out to offend but if what they say is truth and it offends someone oh well.

I somewhat think that's where the Conservatives/Reps are loosing the battle,to many are scared they might offend someone.

There are ways to say somethings that she does, without being so abrasive.  I find her obnoxious personally.  Right more often then not, but still obnoxious.

Most of her interviews she is rather level headed & courteous & polite. Now if she senses someone is yanking her chain she isn't scared to yank back. may be bias but I don't find her nearly as Obnoxious and mean spirited as you avg Liberal talking head or liberal proponent.

I think that is the rights major setback they are letting the left control the game by establishing rules of engagement only the right has to abide by.

Hell you might agree almost 100% with someone but no one likes a wimp.

Zeus, you are quite correct. For far too long the "right" has alowed the "left" to establish rules for the right that they are free to ignore. Ann , of course, counter argues/attacks, regardless of how the left thinks she should. And she does in mockingly with reasonably good humor. I have listened to her and found the comments full of biteing humor, but have not heard the hate that flows froM THE MOUTHS OF the likes of Howard Dean, Alex Baldwin, "Jimmuh"  and on down.

Frankly, I believe it is an ERROR not to give back more than we get, but it has to be done with humor, rather than the lefts acid dripping hate. Ever listen to Alan Combs nonsense? Harry Reid's, Barny Frank's?

THEY are playing hardball while saying the RIGHT should play wiffleball and not complain when hit by a bean ball. That's just stupid. On our part.

If she were gay I would seriously have to consider batting for the other team if I even had a chance.  Ann is one of my heroes.

To some, yes, she can come off as abrasive... I don't know about offensive, but look at who the mouthpieces for the left are.. Randi Rhoades, Al Franken, Alan Colmes (and that is on his heh... radio show), Maureen Down, etc. They are more offensive then Ann because they're comments are vile against American values, the military, etc. and most of the shit they spew are lies. Ann bites back, but with the truth. Liberals hate to see themselves in the mirror, and she does it well.

I don't think that the right needs to follow rules established by the left. But I still think that there are rules we all should follow. Just because MoveOn.org or Michael Moore are being stupid, does not mean we should prove we can be stupid, too. Society is becoming less civil and less polite, and we should not add to the problem, even if we did not start the fire ourselves. This is one of those rare times when it is true that "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Do we really want to go down that road?

We can be so bothered by Micheal Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Nancy Pelosi, et al, that we forget that the majority of the people are in the middle. How can we persuade them? By being civil and polite. I am not saying we will ever win over MoveOn.org or the Daily Kos, but we can win over the majority in the middle.

When the left is rude and insulting to your face, you suggest being polite? Without scarcasm? Without pointing out the rudeness? The lies, fraud, deception? Boy, without being direct but with sharply directed humor, I xcan't see it working. May I say Sen. John McCain is the perfect example of the polite, sane, inclusive exajmple, and may I aslo point out it was an ABJECT failure.

In some regards she is a lot like Bill Buckley. She just uses terminolgy most people can understand.

If they speak their mind/truth...they are blasted with a broadside from the MSM for a month.

Sarah Palin had been the Veep nominee for the Republicans for barely 20 minutes and the attacks had begun.
