My husband just got back from the vet with Toby and apparently he has Kennel cough. He has been hacking all day for about 24 hours. He hasn't been around any other dogs except for Chloe who is our other dog (and she has no symptoms of the disease). They were both vaccinated against it a while back when we had to board them but that was back in July when my brother died. I don't know how long the vaccine lasts.
We have neighbors who have two dogs and I was wondering if he could have gotten it through the fence from one of them? We have an area under the fence where they could technically touch noses. Is there another way he could have gotten it as neither of our two dogs have been around another dogs since Thanksgiving when we went to my husband's parents house and took the dogs.
I have a nasty cough, the inside of my ears and throat itch and it feels like my chest is constricted. I know this is a stupid question but can dogs catch an illness from a person?

That's wierd! The only times I've ever had to deal with Kennel cough is when I brought a dog home from the pound, or had to vaccinate them for the kennel.
I don't think it would be the THanksgiving visit that did it, because I think the incubation period is much shorter than that.
Could be from the dogs next door...maybe they were boarded recently and came home with it?

Kennel cough does not jump species.

It's highly, highly contagious and it's usually brought on by more than one virus or bacterium. The good news is that it's not terribly life-threatening, unless Toby's a very young pup or is otherwise immuno-compromised.
Sounds like he'll be fine with some time and treatment, though.

I thought they only got it when boarded. At least that's when mine used to get it before I realized it was cheaper to have someone stay at the house while gone than to pay to board the animals.

He isn't young (he is 7) but he does have allergies. The vet prescribed antibiotics and told us he wants him to cough so he didn't give him anything for the cough. Thanks for the link.

My Blue dawg (pictured in my avatar) is epileptic. He hates kennels and crates, so we always get someone to stay at the house. It's a lot cheaper than paying to board 3 dogs.
I always get the drops to protect against kennel cough. I don't board the dogs, but they do go to various greyhound events and always have to greet the other greys. My vet said it's safest that way.
BEG, I believe the protection should have lasted a year. Hope he gets better soon, poor pup.
