Title: 'Safety' Remark Gets Muslim Family Kicked Off Plane
Post by: Wretched Excess on January 02, 2009, 08:09:11 AM
ok, I flew over the holidays, and I was totally self conscious about anything I said (other than, "May I please have another beer", anyway).  be that as it may, I tend to doubt that potential hijackers would be discussing the arrangements in english.

'Safety' Remark Gets Muslim Family Kicked Off Plane

WASHINGTON —  A Muslim family removed from a plane Thursday after passengers became concerned about their conversation about the "safest" place to sit says AirTran officials refused to re-book them, even after FBI investigators cleared them of wrongdoing.

All eight members of the Irfan family from Alexandria, Va., and a friend were kicked off an Orlando-bound AirTran Airways flight after two other passengers overheard what they thought was a suspicious remark, according to the Washington Post.

"My brother and his wife were discussing some aspect of airport security," Kashif Irfan told the Washington Post. "The only thing my brother said was, 'Wow, the jets are right next to my window.' I think they were remarking about safety."

Irfan said other fliers heard them discussing the safest place to sit and misunderstood the nature of the conversation.

FBI agents later cleared the ejected passengers, all but one of them U.S.-born citizens who were headed to a Florida retreat.

When you choose to fly Air Tran, bad things follow.  But seriously, Muslim or not, the airline overreacted.

probably a good point.  they weren't known for using airplanes as weapons of mass destruction until 9/11, either.  that occurred to me the second after I clicked on the "reply" button.

any ideology that requires your women to fight probably isn't worth fighting for.

I saw this on Fox earlier today.

The people who were kicked off the plane, a couple of them made comments to the reporter. The guy said he "thought they were misunderstood by those who reported them" and the woman said she was "very offended".

The report said that only one of those kicked off the plane was born in the US.

Well, all I can say is that if I overheard someone looking like them making reference to a "bomb", I would have reported it too.

Given a choice, I'd rather offend somebody than be flying into a building or the ground.

AirTran must have taken it seriously, because they would not let those people book another flight with them, according to the report.
