The Chicago papers are reporting that scandal-tarred Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich plans to appoint 71-year-old Roland Burris to President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat. Reports the Chicago Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet:

WASHINGTON---I've learned that Gov. Blagojevich is poised to name former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to replace President elect Barack Obama in the Senate on Tuesday afternoon. The embattled Blagojevich, fighting impeachment charges in the Illinois House, just called a press conference for 2 p.m. Chicago time at the Thompson State of Illinois Center.
Burris was the first African American to win statewide office in Illinois when he was elected comptroller, serving from 1983 to 1991. He served as Illinois Attorney General from 1991 to 1995. Burris previously ran and lost bids for the U.S. senate and governor.
If tapped as planned, Burris would be the sole African American in the U.S. Senate.
Breaking. (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/12/30/reports_blagojevich_to_appoint.html?hpid=topnews)

This could be interesting. Will the senate refuse to seat him if this happens? They can, but I think Blago is trying an end run by naming  another black to the vacant seat.  :fuelfire:

It's now official.

*snip*
Burris was the first African-American elected to major statewide office. He's served as Illinois' comptroller and ran for governor three times — the last time losing to Blagojevich.
The Democratic governor's announcement as Burris as his pick may be an empty gesture. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who must certify the appointment, said Tuesday he will not do so. And U.S. Senate leaders reiterated that they wouldn't accept anyone appointed by Blagojevich, who was arrested Dec. 9 on federal corruption charges.
In a statement Tuesday, Senate Democrats maintained that Blagojevich should not make the appointment because it is unfair to Burris, unfair to the people of Illinois and ultimately won't stand.

I have to wonder if we are going to see some major back-pedaling by the Dems on this on this one.

The Senate DEMS have already stated that they will not seat anyone appointed by Blago.

Nor do they want a special election...  Heaven forbid that; A repub might win it.

They want Blago impeached and the LT. Gov to take over and make the appointment.

The IL legislature has already shot down a special election bill.

if the dems were smart, they would just seat the blago appointee and call it an afternoon.  although that would make the charges against him seem a bit moot, at least as far as the specific charge of trying to sell the senate seat goes.

I concur.  It occurs to me that "smart dems" is something of an oxymoron though.

For free? They won't seat someone until at least one person has worked out how to gain personally from it.  :-)

the plot thickens.  apparently, it's okay to reject a black candidate if obama says it's ok.  I can't help but wonder where the NAACP is on this one.  as of obama'es resignation, the senate is 100% white.

Democrats' struggle over filling Obama seat

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Bobby Rush says he doesn't think any U.S. senator would be caught turning a black man away from serving alongside them.

He thought wrong.

No Senate Democrats responded to his racial challenge. And they got support from President-elect Barack Obama, who will be the first African-American in the White House.

Rush, D-Ill., dared Senate Democrats Tuesday to block Roland Burris from becoming the Senate's only black member, urging them not to "hang and lynch" the former state attorney general for the alleged corruption by his patron, Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Obama was having none of it, siding with Senate Democrats who vowed to turn Burris away should he show up in Washington to be sworn in.

Roland Burris's Monument to Me

Roland Burris, the man Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich picked to succeed Barack Obama in the Senate, might get to etch another accolade into the monument he built for himself if this appointment goes through.

You see, Burris has already charted his esteemed career path on the walls of his future grave in Chicago's Oak Woods Cemetery (pictured here). Beneath a seal of the state of Illinois, Burris lists his accomplishments to date, and there seems to be plenty of room above the bench to mention his career in the Senate - if he has one.

I have to admit, that's probably the most ostentatious "I Love Me" wall I've ever seen, and I've definitely seen a few of those in my day.

Hell, why stop at just the Senate? Why not go ahead and give the boot to Hillary, say about in 2010 or so, and bring him on as SecState?

Qualifications don't seem to matter these days - just cronyism.

I have been doing some reading about this lately. (Pat Buchanan wrote an interesting column.) It appears that the Senate is REQUIRED by law to seat Burris. Blago is still the governor of Illinois, and as such has a right, even a duty, to appoint someone to represent Illinois. The Illinois Secretary of State does not have discretion in this case; he is required by law to certify what Blago has already done, and a state court could order him to do so.

True, the U.S. Constitution does give the Senate the right to judge the qualifications of its members, but no one is alleging that Burris does not meet the qualifications.
