FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets fired coach Eric Mangini on Monday, a day after a team that harbored Super Bowl hopes with five games left failed to make the playoffs.
The Jets started the season 8-3 under quarterback Brett Favre, beating New England and Tennessee on the road in consecutive weeks and raising visions among fans of the team's first Super Bowl trip since 1969.
"I don't think it was one thing," owner Woody Johnson said at a news conference Monday. "We had to go in a different direction. There's nothing specific. It's just a call we made. Hopefully, it's correct."
The 37-year-old Mangini was called by Johnson one of the league's up-and-coming coaches, but he went 23-26 in three seasons in his first head coaching job. He had another year remaining on his contract.

It had to be done. The Jets lost 4 of their last 5, and it was only a fluke that they beat Buffalo in the Meadowlands.

Does Weeb Ewbank's have a kid who can coach?
.

Good riddance you POS :loser:

The Denver game after NE could be expected to have a letdown but they were never in any game after that and got beat on both sides of the ball.

No credit for going from what they were last year to 9-7 in one season? If the Dolphins hadn't had their miracle turn around they'd have been talking about the Jets turn around instead of the Fish.
That said...I'm extremely disappointed that in all of the coaching firings today Wade Phillips wasn't among them and that TO wasn't traded to Cleveland.

Wade isn't 1/100th the coach his dad was. When the NFL took him on, it was their version of taking on caroline kennedy.

Wade would have been terrific as the Cowboys defensive coordinator. He's one of those guys like Norv Turner and Dave Wannstadt that are great pro coordinators...not so much as the head coach.
I bet the Brownies make a play for him.
Wanna bet the NY Brets make a play for "The Jaw"?

If you mean Bill Cowher, I just saw on ESPN's crawler that Coach Cowher (hey, he won it all with the Steelers, so I give him his due for that) has said that he will talk to the Jets about their vacancy.
My wife is gonna be pumped.

Two seasons ago they were 10-6 and Mangirl was "Mangenius."
How much did they spend last offseason again?
:lmao:

Tannenbaum will have to go, and Cowher won't be feeling the la-la-love he felt in Pittsburgh by the NY media. He does hate the Patriots though, so that makes him perfect for the job.

Mangini's pal rips Favre, Jets ownerViews 73 Comments 3 07:55 AM ET 01.03 Share Print It My T&R Teddy Atlas is one Jet who won't be back next year. The famed boxing trainer and Jets "special assistant" ripped the organization and quarterback Brett Favre yesterday. Atlas, a close friend of Eric Mangini, said the recently fired coach was doomed from the moment the Jets acquired Favre. "Mangini went into the season ready for a whole different approach, whether it was going to be Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens (at quarterback), whoever won that battle," Atlas told The Post. "It was going to be a secure, protect the ball, intelligent approach. It was something he was comfortable with, something he believed in. The whole plan, the whole blueprint got thrown out the window when Favre came. He's the antithesis of that. He throws the ball all over the place." Mangini brought Atlas in to work with the Jets, giving them boxing training in the offseason and providing motivational talks during the season. Atlas appeared on 1050 ESPN Radio yesterday, and talked with The Post about the Jets' firing of Mangini. Atlas is listed in the Jets' media guide as "special assistant - boxing." Atlas said Jets owner Woody Johnson forced the trade upon Mangini.

...I only had one game plan. I couldn't adjust. It's not my fault. Johnson and Tannenbaum did this to me. :bawl:
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I think I'll eat some worms.........
:bawl:
So glad his buddy did this prior to Lerner making a decision on the Browns' coaching job. Poor dear misunderstood Eric. That unfortunate bastard will never catch a break. :evillaugh:

Supposedly, Favre is considering retiring . . . again.

How many years did Clemens do this (until his unfortunate disclosure of juice and sleeping with 15 year olds)? He doesn't give a damn about anyone but himself.
Dude needs to retire, and should have retired last season.
