HAVELOCK, N.C. — Rescuers are at the scene of a jet fighter crash near the Marine Corps' Cherry Point air station in eastern North Carolina. Officials at the base say there is no word yet on the condition of the aircraft's pilot.
Cherry Point spokeswoman Gunnery Sgt. Reina Barnett told WNCT-TV in Greenville the crash occurred about 12:15 p.m. in some woods off a runway at the base.
Base spokesman Mike Barton said he had been told the plane is an AV-8B Harrier, but had little additional information.
The television station said a Marine helicopter is conducting a search and rescue operation at the scene, near the state's Cherry Branch ferry terminal on the Neuse River.
An AV-8B Harrier crashed in February in Carteret County, but the pilot wasn't injured.

HAVELOCK, N.C. — A Marine fighter jet crashed Monday about a mile short of a runway at an eastern North Carolina air base, killing the pilot, a Marine Corps spokesman said.
The single-seat plane was returning to the base after a training flight when it crashed about 12:30 p.m. in an unpopulated area, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point spokesman Mike Barton said. No one else was hurt, Barton said.
R.I.P. Marine :taps:

Yeah it sucks. It went down in a field around some houses. I believe that the pilot road her into the ground for safety.
It explains all the damn fire trucks leaving the base during lunch. Be intresting the next couple of days on what happened cause the buck stops here with the AV-8. Guessing something wrong with the engine as what was reported by some hunters that called 911.
Go with GOD Marine.

God Bless, Marine.
Please God, watch over this brave Marine's family as they cope with their loss.

That's pretty much what I meant, hours after the crash in settled territory and the pilot still unaccounted for generally adds up to 'He didn't get out.'

R.I.P. Marine. May God bring you into his kingdom and watch over your family giving them strength in their time of need.

Please accept my gratitude for the sacrifice made in the defense of our country. His death will be felt by those who knew him and by those who honor him.

Indeed, may God truly watch out for this fallen mans' family, during these trying times. A horrible shame, but he died as a hero.
