my huge screen TV is about to die, but I hate to part with it. Usually, I am fine with my whimpering TV, but I just spent a week with my dad, who has a massive Visio HD TV.
i am going to buy an HD TV this week.
recommendations?
(and Thor, don't move this to the tech forum :-) )

I gots a 50" Sony Bravia last year. :-)

I am looking at Samsung 50" LCD TVs..... imagine GH on one of them. :-)

Don't buy VIZIO, I have one and it's sound is really bad, ESPECIALLY on HD channels. I'm waiting for mine to crash so I can justify buying a new one.

I just got this hot little number for Christmas and LOVE it!

I bet you have never seen one of those in real life. :p

We still have one of those in our kitchen.

You will need to convert it come Feb. :-*

Oh please. I am not that young. But thank you. :evillaugh:

Back in the day, we used to pop our popcorn on the stove top. Sometimes it didn't turn out perfect!.... gasp. :p

I was trying to find a picture of the old-style popcorn maker that we used to have sitting on our counter growing up. You would plug it in and throw in some kernels and let 'er rip. The thing was so loud though you would have thought we were firing up a 747 engine right there on the counter top.
-
We used to have an electric griddle with a plastic cover. It worked pretty well. As long as you spaced the kernels out evenly, they all got popped.

Those were the infamous air poppers.

WE's just using this as his latest excuse to go to Best Buy and lust after tvs. I'm pretty sure they have his photo on the security stand when you walk in "Don't let this man get too close to the big screens."
:-)

It's connected to basic cable, so it'll last for some time yet. :)

Yeah! That's it. Ah, the memories.

We still use a hot air popper for most of our corn snackin' needs.

I'd be cautious of VIZIO also. I had a regular on down in FL and it turned out to be a POS. Their HD products may be different but...
We like our 46 incher from LG (LCD). Sony's are always pretty good too. Checkout Consumer Reports WE.

Vizio is made by Sony, so I thought it would be fine. I got it on sale at Costco 2 years ago. Next time, I will probably go with an Aquos.

Toshibas are great, too. (great laptops AND tvs). My grandparents, being much more technologically-savvy than most their age (I had to fuss at them for getting a new computer with Vista, though :uhsure:), have one of these:

I have one made by Phillips, it's about 18 months old and works great.
They are all pretty good for the most part.
As for popcorn.....

I've got an LG 42" LCD. Works fine for me. Also has an internal hard drive to record shows. GFY, Tivo.

SR's parents had one and it barely lasted a year. I've heard some people at work talking about them, too, with similar results.
We have a 46" LG in the living room/media room (put all the electronic stuff in the living room, which we never used before, just a depository of some of my grandmother's antique furniture) and a 32" Sony Bravia in the bedroom and a 15" Sony flatscreen digital in the kitchen. We've had good luck with them.

If you have a cable or satelite set-top box, you may be able to save some scratch by getting a television that doesn't have a built-in TV tuner, that's what I did.
Check out PriceWatch.com and see if you can find something with free shipping.

LOL! Our Sony in the bedroom is a Bravia, only a 720p but it puts
out a greyt picture.

We got a Vizio for the kids toy room, decent picture and sound - it was the least expensive 32" LCD we could find and if it lasts a few years I'll be happy. I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for."

I can walk into any eletronics store and pick out the Samsung units on pic quality alone. They stand out in a TV wall.
I just had my DTVPal converter boxes arrive yesterday evening from Dish Network. I'm impressed as hell by them. I'm up to 35 channels from the 10 I had. All look great, including the weaker ones from before. The menus are sweet along with an awesome channel guide. Hell it even supports IR blasters to turn on recording. All in all not bad for the price of tax and shipping. :-)

We've got a DLP .... can't call up what name brand right now but it is fantastic. I really like the picture and I don't worry about the sound because we have it plugged into a Bose 321 system.
Another great thing about a DLP is how easy they are to work on. The lamps last about 2,000 hours but when you need to replace it it takes less than 5 minutes. The lamp runs about $175.00 and Best Buy wanted to charge me $450 to replace it. I ordered the lamp and installed it with no problems whatsoever.
