It was religion that gave us Prop 8. It was religion that justified slavery, separation of the races, and the established order. Religious freedom is abused by all the hatred and intolerance that are part of the Sunday homilies in far too many churches across our land.
We must mind the wise words of Emma Goldman who warned "that God, the State, and society are non-existent, that their promises are null and void, since they can be fulfilled only through man's subordination."
"Religion, the dominion of the human mind; Property, the dominion of human needs; and Government, the dominion of human conduct, represent the stronghold of man's enslavement and all the horrors it entails. Religion! How it dominates man's mind, how it humiliates and degrades his soul. God is everything, man is nothing, says religion. But out of that nothing God has created a kingdom so despotic, so tyrannical, so cruel, so terribly exacting that naught but gloom and tears and blood have ruled the world since gods began."

“I am now convinced that children should not be subjected to the frightfulness of the Christian religion . . . If the concept of a father who plots to have his own son put to death is presented to children as beautiful and as worthy of society's admiration, what types of human behavior can be presented to them as reprehensible?â€
—Ruth Hurmence Green,
Preface of Born Again Skeptic's Guide to the Bible
I think Christianity is abusive to EVERYONE because we are all told we are worthless because we are human due to Original Sin. I think Original Sin is a con job. I left Christianity because I developed too much self-respect to take all that tearing down seriously. It really tears down a lot of people and causes them to suffer from guilt for things they did not do.
I am not perfect. I think most of us do the best we can. Humans are asking questions and figuring out how to deal with life. We don't need some preacher telling us that God the Cop is watching us and judging us for being human.
That said, I celebrate a secular Christmas because I enjoy it.

'Twas the Hate Before Christmas...
Advertisements [?]Genuis, cross-posted from Firedoglake:
'Tis the Season of Christmas, and all 'cross the 'nets
Wingnuts are whining of how they're oppressed.
Tripe has been tossed out at Townhall with care,
Pretending it's "uncool" to say you like prayer.
Chuck Norris believes that Jesus got jacked,
Or perhaps neutered -- but at least somehow off-whacked.
"All-powerful atheists have just gone too far!"
Cries that illiterate Elf, jolly Mary Grabar.
I've long been tit-bored with this class of crap,
And had resolved to ignore it with an X-mas nightcap,
When what to my dyspeptic eyes should appear,
But K-Lo claiming it's worse to be Christian than queer!
Obama wants Warren! He's thus not a "divider"!
Bring in the bigots! Become a "uniter"!
More rapid than eagles, K-Lo's canards they come --
"Those most hurt by Prop-8 are the Mormons.
They of course have the clear right to deny rights to the gay,
Their tight magic underpants make that OK."
As I drew up my hand, to upraise my mid-finger,
K-Lo let loose the the worst whine of the winger:
"If you're opposed to gay marriage you're labeled 'intolerant,'
But what's more depraved than a gent loving a gent?
The MSM lies if they say that the reason this skeeves us
Has ****-all to do with our devotion to Jesus;
We dislike it for reasons of hygiene and children!
Who must NOT be raised by those men who like men!
I can't quite explain why, though most devoutly I hope,
You know the real victim here is that poor man, The Pope.
Any gender bending old Benny considers a piss-up,
Which is why the Church will never ordain a gay bishop."
**** this, I thought, and went back to my work,
And wrote down this poem about how K-Lo's a jerk.
Her line of bullshit can make you depressed,
But in the long run we shouldn't be stressed:
It's Christmas and you know it's not we
Who want to impose upon others the meaning of family.
We don't defend torture, or excuse bigotry,
We can just chill out, or not, in front of the tree.
And so let me say, as I drive out of sight,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all, Dyn-o-Mite.

I was born into a 'christian' home; went to church, went to christian schools, listened to christian music and only had christian friends. I didn't even know what a homosexual was until later in life. My faith taught me to love and show compassion to others. Yet homosexuals were 'outside' this love. It was quite accepted and supported to discriminate against such 'sinners'. Yet in my early 20s (i'm 28 now), i started questioning everything .. esp the dogma surrounding the evangelical's churches view of homosexuals.
By 25 i finally came to the conclusion that no one would 'choose' homosexuality. I was angry that the God of the New Testament would create people whom he condemned.
How does this all relate to the movie Milk?
Well ... i found myself crying in the parking lot after the movie was over. I felt angry. I was angry at myself for believing and accepting such hate. I regretted all the aweful things i had said/thought. This movie demonstrated how similarly the arguments in support of prop 8 were of prop 6. And that people still consider homosexuals to be deviants. There are many Anita Bryant's in the world today -- they just aren't as tactless. They pretend to love; yet they discriminate just as loudly. They are the Sarah Palins, the Mike Huckabee's, the Mormons and the evangelicals.
For those reading this that are gay; I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all the aweful, hateful things you have had to endure. You didn't choose to be gay but as John Stewart says people choose their religion. There is hope. People can change. After all, I did.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll admit that I felt somewhat as this person did 10 years and more ago. I have become increasingly tolerant over the years, and now am ashamed for ever having that mindset. I have not seen the movie "Milk" yet, as it is not available anywhere near where I live (WHY??). But I will the very day it shows near me, and I have a feeling that this movie may have a very positive effect towards changing thought patterns of those who hate. I hope so, I am so tired of the division. Race and gender issues have long gotten more attention than the gay rights issue. Those issues deserve the attention they receive, as far as trying to get equal rights for minorities and women, but the gay rights issue obviously needs more attention. I posted this anonymous person's thoughts here because they opened my eyes as to the potential this movie has to increase momentum for the rights that gays deserve- the very same rights that everyone deserves.
Us "haters" absolutely believe that all people, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, race, or age, should have the same rights. Of course, gay people just happen to have all the same rights as everyone else. It's too bad we can't say that about the very young people, isn't it?

I'm sure it's not only religious folks that think people who use an exit orifice for an entrance shouldn't get special treatment.

Who would have ever thought that 52.3% of Californian voters, (6,838,107 people), are right-wing religious fanatics? ::) :lmao:
-
Nary a mention of the barbaric treatment of women in muslim countries or how well things are working out in Africa which has very little Christian influence through much of it.
No surprise.

The primitives can rant and rage and fume and Hate and scorn and mock all they wish, but it's shouting against the wind.
God has always been around; religions such as Judaism and Christianity have been around for a very long time, and don't appear to be going anywhere.
The primitives have been around circa 40-60 years and generally have less than half of that, of their lives left.
After which the primitives, as we ourselves, inevitably become dust.
Too bad for the primitives.

What's worse for the primitives is that their predilictions towards bashing anything about God's Only Son pretty much consign their souls to eternity in Hell.

Between you and me, sir, aren't we both getting tired of the gay minority dominating Skins's island?
I wonder if the domain name gaydemocraticunderground's taken yet.
It would be a good place to stash the hot air brigades.

I just checked; I punched in "www.gaydemocraticunderground.com," and it's not taken.

how about gaycloset.com?

how about gaycloset.com?
Something's really got to be done about this.
When one gets out the boat and rows over to Skins's island to observe the primitives, about half the bonfires seem to be gay threads.
They're so noisy, so loud, so Hate-filled, so raucous, so impolite, so temper-tamtrumish, they're ruining Skins's island for the rest of the primitives.
I think they need to be segregated on their own little island, for the betterment of Skins's island as whole.

I guess Skinner will have to determine who donates the most before he can choose a side

They've decided that January 20th is their Holy Day. For now.

You can include me in the mix, and it seems several of the primitives are tired of teh gay 24/7. Chances are many of the primitives are privately getting tired of it, but they don't dare speak out. Others could be supporting them for future payback down the road ("Hey primitive fag, I supported you during the Warren thing. Well, here's my pet issue and I expect you to support me with the same sense of urgency.) If that's the case, they'll soon learn that supporting the fag agenda and expecting them to return the favor for your agenda is a one-way street.
Best thing they could do is hide those thread so as to not be tempted to tell the fags to shut up, and start their own topics. Initially the fags will create more and more threads to try and gain more attention to themselves, but if the primites stay the course and not give in, eventually the fags will cease.

Apparently, this DUmbass has never read the Bible.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus

And apparently, would rather take orders from The State (Commie) then from a loving, and just God.
